The Marathon In Palindromes, Jeff Grant Nov 2000

The Marathon In Palindromes, Jeff Grant

Word Ways

With the encouragement and support of my wife, Pat, I recently walked a marathon (42-195km) for the first time. This experience inspired the following palindromes, purportedly based on quotes collected progressively from a motley crew of international participants during another marathon.

The Listmaker, Dave Morice Nov 2000

The Listmaker, Dave Morice

Word Ways

I have a habit of making up lists. My very first list, which I wrote in first grade, was a list of all lists I wanted to make in the future. That list began with my second list, which was called "a list of my very first list". My third list came next, but I lost it soon after I made it. My fourth was a list of lists I'd lost. My fifth was a list of things that might have been on my third list.

The "A" Game, Richard Lederer Nov 2000

The "A" Game, Richard Lederer

Word Ways

When someone had a good day on the athletic field, we say "She brought her "A" game with her." Now I invite you to play a different kind of "A" game, one involving charaded homogrpahs and homophones. Each answer consists of words that sound alike, although the words may be spelled differently. The answer will always be in the form of "a + word + word" or "word + a + word". From each definition you are to identify the words.

Butterfly Transadditions, Susan Thorpe Nov 2000

Butterfly Transadditions, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

Over the years, many examples of transadditions have appeared in Word Ways. A transaddition is the result of adding a letter to a word and then rearranging all the letters to form another, longer word. It is relatively easy to start with a single letter and, step by step, achieve transadditions up to length 7 or 8 letters. Longer ones are more difficult.

Textual Logology, A. Ross Eckler Nov 2000

Textual Logology, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

The most important purpose of Word Ways is to present new logological ideas, showing how far one can move beyond the well-trodden paths of palindromes, anagrams, word squares, lipograms and the like. However, it is also important to step back now and then to observe how disparate parts of logology relate to each other, as can be seen in Making the Alphabet Dance. This article shows how various logological concepts appearing in Word Ways during the past thirty years can be grouped in a new logological field, that of textual logology.

Anagrams And Antigrams: An Antigram, Michael Keith Nov 2000

Anagrams And Antigrams: An Antigram, Michael Keith

Word Ways

The two short essays below are transposals of each other (that is, each can be formed by rearranging the letters in the other). More precisely, they are antigrams, since one is an essay on anagrams and the other is an essay on the opposite topic, antigrams.

Word Ways

Editor's Note: In the August 1992 and February 1994 Word Ways, Harry L. Stern presented a number of poems based on transpostions of friends; names, and in August 1994 Susan Thorpe followed up with a poem on her name. Here is a further example of this genre.

Palindromic Fortune Cookies, John E. Connett Nov 2000

Palindromic Fortune Cookies, John E. Connett

Word Ways

Chinese fortune cookies are famous for their inscrutability; in the May 1988 Kickshaws, Eric Albert reported his favorite, "He Is Kissing a Triding Keepsake Of Yours". Short palindromes are similar, often giving us a skewed view of reality.

Codebook: The Lsay 1999 School Survey For The Y98 Cohort Technical Report No. 23, Sue Fullarton Nov 2000

Codebook: The Lsay 1999 School Survey For The Y98 Cohort Technical Report No. 23, Sue Fullarton

LSAY Technical Reports

Students participating in this LSAY cohort were originally sampled in 1998 from 296 schools nationally. In 1999, the schools from which the original sample of students was drawn took part in a survey to collect information about the features and programs of schools, as well as features of teachers and teaching, which might influence the progress of students in their school and in their later work careers. The survey involved two questionnaires: (1) a school questionnaire to be completed by the principal (or other school representative) and (2) a questionnaire to a sample of ten Year 10 teachers. The assistance …

Attitudinal Outcomes Of Punishment Events In Team-Sporting Settings, Jason Tapp Nov 2000

Attitudinal Outcomes Of Punishment Events In Team-Sporting Settings, Jason Tapp

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The organizational justice perspective suggests that procedural and distributive justice evaluations of a specific punishment event will affect an individual's reactions to the punishment. A 3 (decision-making procedure: autocratic, participative, group) X 3 (punishment severity: low, moderate, high) factorial design was utilized to develop punishment scenarios in team-sport settings which were evaluated by 205 participants. Decision-making procedure and punishment severity both produced significant main effects on evaluations of the fairness of the procedure. Only punishment severity produced a significant main effect on perceptions of the fairness and appropriateness of the punishment, as well as on perceptions of the likelihood of …
