Fast Transport Of Neurofilament Protein Along Microtubules In Squid Axoplasm, Veena Prahlad, Brian T. Helfand, George M. Langford, Ron D. Vale, Robert D. Goldman
Biology - All Scholarship
Using squid axoplasm as a model system, we have visualized the fast transport of non-filamentous neurofilament protein particles along axonal microtubules. This transport occurs at speeds of 0.5-1.0 microm/second and the majority of neurofilament particles stain with kinesin antibody. These observations demonstrate, for the first time, that fast (0.5-1.0 microm/second) transport of neurofilament proteins occurs along microtubules. In addition, our studies suggest that neurofilament protein can be transported as non-membrane bound, nonfilamentous subunits along axons, and that the transport is kinesin-dependent. Microtubule-based fast transport might therefore provide a mechanism for the distribution and turnover of neurofilament, and perhaps other cytoskeletal …

Are The 'Nations' Present In Matthew?, Glenna S. Jackson
Religion & Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
Traditionally Matthew 28:16-20 has been placed in the context of a mandate to Christianize the world. This study attempts to ascertain if the gentile woman in the genealogy and the Canaanite woman near the center of Matthew's gospel constitute a precedent and a model for the mandate to bring the enemy tribes into the fold of Israel.

Chagas disease is a major public health challenge for most Latin American countries. An initiative for the coordinated control of Chagas disease transmission throughout the Andean countries was launched in 1997. Since the early 1990s, control measures based on elimination of domestic/peridomestic triatomine colonies and screening of donor blood by serological testing have resulted in a reduction in incidence of ~70% in the Southern Cone countries (WHO, 1991; Dias & Schofield, 1999; Moncayo, 1999; WHO/CTD, 2000).

Approach To Ergodicity In Monte Carlo Simulations, J. P. Neirotti, David L. Freeman, J. D. Doll
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The approach to the ergodic limit in Monte Carlo simulations is studied using both analytic and numerical methods. With the help of a stochastic model, a metric is defined that enables the examination of a simulation in both the ergodic and nonergodic regimes. In the nonergodic regime, the model implies how the simulation is expected to approach ergodic behavior analytically, and the analytically inferred decay law of the metric allows the monitoring of the onset of ergodic behavior. The metric is related to previously defined measures developed for molecular dynamics simulations, and the metric enables the comparison of the relative …
