Magmatic Processes Operating During The Middle To Late Pliocene And Pleistocene Along The Transition Zone Near 43º North, Christy L. Lee Nov 2000

Magmatic Processes Operating During The Middle To Late Pliocene And Pleistocene Along The Transition Zone Near 43º North, Christy L. Lee

Dissertations and Theses

A geochemical and structural transition zone exists between the Cascades and Basin and Range provinces in Oregon. Geologic mapping in this area has allowed the definition of six volcanic rock sequences: 1) interfingered alkali-rich basaltic trachyandesite to trachydacite lava flows and low-alkali basaltic andesite lava flows, 2) HAOT lava flows, 3) basaltic andesite lava flows, 4) andesite lava flows and vent deposits with minor basaltic andesite lava flows, 5) HAB lava flows, and 6) interfingered basaltic andesite, andesite, and trachyandesite lava flows.

Geochemical models of sequence 1 alkali-rich rocks suggest the fractionation of the parent assemblage plag (An55)+magn+ol±aug …

The Early Years In African American Education: A Life History Approach To Evaluating Control Theory, Beverly Diane Logan Nov 2000

The Early Years In African American Education: A Life History Approach To Evaluating Control Theory, Beverly Diane Logan

Dissertations and Theses

The concern of this study is educational achievement, disproportionately low among inner-city African-American students. Because education is so highly valued, particularly among African-Americans, underachievement is considered deviation from cultural norms.

Social control theory attempts to explain why people conform to social norms in spite of pressures toward deviance. Many adverse pressures encountered in inner-city environments and persistent features of institutional racism toward blacks in school make underachievement understandable. Hirschi's (1969) control model, therefore, seemed most appropriate for examining black student achievement.

Control theory holds that individuals conform to cultural norms when their behavior is controlled through established social bonds, which …

Nicotine Enhances Acquisition Of A T-Maze Visual Discrimination: Assessment Of Individual Differences, J. Besheer, Rick A. Bevins Nov 2000

Nicotine Enhances Acquisition Of A T-Maze Visual Discrimination: Assessment Of Individual Differences, J. Besheer, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In the present report, rats' performance was assessed in five tasks designed to measure behavioral response to different novel stimuli under different experimental situations. Daily nicotine treatment (0, 0.3 or l.0 mg/kg) began after the conclusion of the behavioral tasks and continued throughout the experiment. Training of a T-maze visual discrimination task commenced after 11 days of nicotine pretreatment. As a group, rats treated with the higher dose of nicotine (l.0 mg/kg) made fewer errors to acquire the initial T-maze discrimination than saline-treated controls. Activity induced by an inescapable novel environment (i.e. first behavioral screen) was positively correlated with the …

Chemical And Biological Trends During Lake Evolution In Recently Deglaciated Terrain, Daniel R. Engstrom, Sherilyn C. Fritz, James E. Almendinger, Stephen Juggins Nov 2000

Chemical And Biological Trends During Lake Evolution In Recently Deglaciated Terrain, Daniel R. Engstrom, Sherilyn C. Fritz, James E. Almendinger, Stephen Juggins

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

As newly formed landscapes evolve, physical and biological changes occur that are collectively known as primary succession. Although succession is a fundamental concept in ecology, it is poorly understood in the context of aquatic environments. The prevailing view is that lakes become more enriched in nutrients as they age, leading to increased biological production. Here we report the opposite pattern of lake development, observed from the water chemistry of lakes that formed at various times within the past 10,000 years during glacial retreat at Glacier Bay, Alaska. The lakes have grown more dilute and acidic with time, accumulated dissolved organic …
