The Anchor, Volume 114.10: November 15, 2000, Hope College Nov 2000

The Anchor, Volume 114.10: November 15, 2000, Hope College

The Anchor: 2000

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Findings From The Teaching, Learning, And Computing Survey: Is Larry Cuban Right?, Harry Jay Becker Nov 2000

Findings From The Teaching, Learning, And Computing Survey: Is Larry Cuban Right?, Harry Jay Becker

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Cuban (1986; 2000) has argued that computers are largely incompatible with the requirements of teaching, and that, for the most part, teachers will continue to reject their use as instruments of student work during class. Using data from a nationally representative survey of 4th through 12th grade teachers, this paper demonstrates that although Cuban correctly characterizes frequent use of computers in academic subject classes as a teaching practice of a small and distinct minority, certain conditions make a big difference in the likelihood of a teacher having her students use computers frequently during class time. ...

H-Ns Controls Pap And Daa Fimbrial Transcription In Escherichia Coli In Response To Multiple Environmental Cues, C. A. White-Ziegler, A. Villapakkam, K. Ronaszeki, S. Young Nov 2000

H-Ns Controls Pap And Daa Fimbrial Transcription In Escherichia Coli In Response To Multiple Environmental Cues, C. A. White-Ziegler, A. Villapakkam, K. Ronaszeki, S. Young

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A comparative study was completed to determine the influence of various environmental stimuli on the transcription of three different fimbrial operons in Escherichia coli and to determine the role of the histone-like protein H-NS in this environmental regulation. The fimbrial operons studied included the pap operon, which encodes pyelonephritis-associated pili (P pili), the daa operon, which encodes F1845 fimbriae, and the fan operon, which encodes K99 fimbriae. Using lacZYA transcriptional fusions within each of the fimbrial operons, we tested temperature, osmolarity, carbon source, rich medium, oxygen levels, pH, amino acids, solid medium, and iron concentration for their effects on fimbrial …

Fermi Surface Properties Of Low-Concentration Cexla1-Xb6: De Haas - Van Alphen, A. A. Teklu, R. G. Goodrich, N. Harrison, D. Hall, Z. Fisk, D. Young

Faculty Publications

The de Haas - Van Alphen (dHvA) effect is used to study angular-dependent extremal areas of the Fermi surfaces and effective masses of CexLa1-xB6 alloys for x between 0 and 0.05. The dHvA signals from these alloys are observed to change from that arising from the normal two-spin metal, LaB6, to a single-spin sheet signal at x = 0.05.

Eosinophil Major Basic Protein-1 Does Not Contribute To Allergen-Induced Airway Pathologies In Mouse Models Of Asthma, K. L. Denzler, S. C. Farmer, J. R. Crosby, M. Borchers, G. Cieslewicz, K. A. Larson, S. Cormier-Regard, N. A. Lee, J. J. Lee Nov 2000

Eosinophil Major Basic Protein-1 Does Not Contribute To Allergen-Induced Airway Pathologies In Mouse Models Of Asthma, K. L. Denzler, S. C. Farmer, J. R. Crosby, M. Borchers, G. Cieslewicz, K. A. Larson, S. Cormier-Regard, N. A. Lee, J. J. Lee

Faculty Publications

The relationship between eosinophils and the development of Ag-induced pulmonary pathologies, including airway hyper-responsiveness, was investigated using mice deficient for the secondary granule component, major basic protein-1 (mMBP-1). The loss of mMBP-1 had no effect on OVA-induced airway histopathologies or inflammatory cell recruitment. Lung function measurements of knockout mice demonstrated a generalized hyporeactivity to methacholine-induced airflow changes (relative to wild type); however, this baseline phenotype was observable only with methacholine; no relative airflow changes were observed in response to another nonspecific stimulus (serotonin). Moreover, OVA sensitization/aerosol challenge of wild-type and mMBP-1(-/-) mice resulted in identical dose-response changes to either methacholine …
