OBJECTIVE: Although sleep disorders are common, these are under-recognized and underestimated by many workers in the medical field due to lack of physician9s education in sleep and sleep disorders. We conducted this survey to assess the general knowledge and attitude of Primary Health Care Physicians in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia towards sleep disorders. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to all Primary Health Care physicians working in Primary Health Care centers of the Ministry of Health in Riyadh. The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 has instituted major changes in providing for the poor in the United States. This article examines the importance of evaluating the impact of this legislation from a social work perspective. Using Mannheim as a theoretical orientation, welfare reform is examined in relation to dominant ideologies of the 90's. The salience of social work research, particularly qualitative research, in evaluating welfare reform outcomes is explored. Social workers are encouraged to challenge current ideology and utilize social work expertise to conduct research and disseminate information documenting the achievements and misfortunes of clients …

This article is a direct outgrowth of the appearance of Ex Corde Ecclesiae and the need for Catholic colleges and universities to address their hiring practices in order to maintain their identity as Catholic institutions of higher learning. The author draws a parallel between the personal philosophy of individuals within the community and the perceived, if not real, institutional philosophy of the college or university as Catholic. How does the mission of the university relate to the mission that Christ gave his Church? This article explores the presuppositions that preceded Ex Corde Ecclesiae and offers an analysis of the recently approved ordinances for its implementation. Candid discussion of the challenges that remain in the implementation process concludes the article. Calling the 1967 Land O’ Lakes Statement by the presidents of the major American Catholic universities “not the path to follow,” the author explains how a successful implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae might look.

Religion And U.S. Culture, James L. Heft

After reviewing the history of the interplay between religion and culture in the U.S., this article explores important facets of contemporary American society that color the experience and meaning of religious faith. Among these are excessive individualism, a heightened awareness of the need for personal integrity, and the desire for personal religious experience. While religion is often treated as a “classroom pariah” at universities, the author argues that there are numerous possibilities for a more full integration of religion into university life and overall American culture.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a private vocational training organization's selection procedures and training programs. Specifically, the selection and training process was analyzed by employing qualitative and quantitative approaches that determined the relevant contribution the process had on employee selection and preparation. As part of this evaluative research, plant managers and supervisors from three machine manufacturing organizations, the program director and faculty of the training organization, and former trainees perceptions were used to compliment the quantitative analysis. Statistical analysis was conducted by assessing the predictive power of interview ratings, aptitude tests, and training tests. …

OBJECTIVE: To assess the factors that influence the reproductive performance in patients who had previous salpingectomy by laparotomy for ectopic pregnancy in the South-west Region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: Fifty four patients who had pregnancies following salpingectomy for previous ectopic pregnancy were studied retrospectively at Abha Maternity Hospital in the Southern Region of Saudi Arabia. RESULTS: There were 130 ectopic pregnancies during the study period out of which 54 patients became pregnant subsequently. Of the subsequent pregnancies, there were 41 (80%) intrauterine pregnancies and 13 (20%) extrauterine recorded pregnancies. Out of the intrauterine pregnancies, 36 (88%) resulted in full term …

OBJECTIVE: Accidental injuries are the leading cause of death among children. Many of these injuries could be prevented if the parents took additional safety precautions. We aimed to study the parent9s safety practices and explore the possible correlating and contributing factors to unfavorable safety behaviors. METHODS: Prospective interviews with the parents of infants seen consecutively during a routine well baby clinic visit were conducted using a structured 38-item questionnaire. RESULTS: Two hundred and eighty nine structured interviews were conducted and the mother was interviewed in 88% of cases. Only 4% of families had a smoke detector at home and 8% …

Faint Radio Sources And Star Formation History, Deborah B. Haarsma, R. B. Partridge, R. A. Windhorst, E. A. Richards

The centimeter-wave luminosity of local radio galaxies correlates well with their star formation rate. We extend this correlation to surveys of high-redshift radio sources to estimate the global star formation history. The star formation rate found from radio observations needs no correction for dust obscuration, unlike the values calculated from optical and ultraviolet data. Three deep radio surveys have provided catalogs of sources with nearly complete optical identifications and nearly 60% complete spectroscopic redshifts: the Hubble Deep Field and Flanking Fields at 12h + 62°, the SSA13 field at 13h + 42°, and the V15 field at 14h + 52°. …
