Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
This report describes work performed by CDM Technologies Inc. in conjunction with the Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center of California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, for the Office of Naval Research (ONR), on the SEAWAY experimental system for planning, gaming and executing maritime logistic operations from a sea base. SEAWAY incorporates three fundamental concepts that distinguish it from existing (i.e., legacy) command and control applications. First, it is a collaborative system in which computer-based agents assist human operators by monitoring, analyzing and reasoning about events in near real-time. Second, SEAWAY includes an ontological model of the …

The Internet In Turkey And Pakistan: A Comparative Analysis, Peter Wolcott, Seymour E. Goodman
The Internet In Turkey And Pakistan: A Comparative Analysis, Peter Wolcott, Seymour E. Goodman
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
The Global Diffusion of the Internet Project was initiated in 1997 to study the diffusion and absorption of the Internet to, and within, many diverse countries. This research has resulted in an ongoing series of reports and articles that have developed an analytic framework for evaluating the Internet within countries and applied it to more than 25 countries. (Seehttp://mosaic.unomaha.edu/gdi.html for links to some of these reports and articles.)
The current report applies the analytic framework to compare and contrast the Internet experiences of Turkey and Pakistan, through mid-2000. Although historically these countries have not been closely related, there are …

This review is also available under the following title: Mountain Partisans: Guerrilla Warfare in the Southern Appalachians, 1861-1865 Finally, after years of relative neglect, scholars have "discovered" the Appalachian South during the Civil War era as an important, rich, and complex subje....

Limits Of Loyalty: A Rediscovered Diary Reveals Atlanta's Underground Unionists, Mark E. Neely
Civil War Book Review
Ever since the historical discovery of internal opposition to the Confederacy as described in Frank L. Owsley's 1925 book, State Rights in the Confederacy, the subject has fascinated scholars of Southern history even while proving curiously unmanageable. For all his genius in puncturing the L....

Warfare And Word Play: A Postmodernist Rendering Of Civil War Memory And Literature, Elizabeth Fox-Genovese
Civil War Book Review
In Disarming the Nation, Elizabeth Young seeks to rectify the prevailing vision of the Civil War as a male exercise in nation build-ing and to discredit the prevailing view of the literature about it as a "complemen-tary story of patrilineal self-generation." Deploring the "myth of origins" ....
The Second Amendment: Structure, History, And Constitutional Change, David S. Yassky
The Second Amendment: Structure, History, And Constitutional Change, David S. Yassky
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Part I of the Article engages the revisionists squarely on the turf they have staked out: the intent of those who framed and ratified the Second Amendment. Here I credit the revisionists with some important insights. Their research reminds us how greatly the world in which the Second Amendment was adopted differed from our own. This perspective helps us understand how the Founders could have placed the right to bear arms on par with the right to free speech--a decision that baffles many modern Americans. Yet while the revisionists correctly perceive that the right to keep and bear arms was …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The complexities of natural and human events that make up the history of a place also create components of its image. Images, even those that are meant to describe limited, specific information, often reveal more than that which they were designed to tell. The maps that have been used in conjunction with traditional notions of landscape painting suggest that there is no single way to understand a place. They also hint of something ineffable but true emerging from their forms. The history of movement of people and natural forces, the arriving and leaving of individuals and cultures change the landscape. …
