UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Challenges of Opera Direction is an investigation of the art of the opera stage director. Furthermore it details directing techniques and examples gleaned from the direction of Mozart's The Impresario (Der Shauspieldirektor) and Donizetti's The Elixir of Love (L'elisir d'amore) both at UNLV and an assistant directing internship with Seattle Opera's production of Delibes's Lakme. Also included are chapters on the art of collaborating with conductors, designers and performers.

Canadian Same Sex Relationship Recognition Struggles And The Contradictory Nature Of Legal Victories, Brenda Cossman Jan 2000

Canadian Same Sex Relationship Recognition Struggles And The Contradictory Nature Of Legal Victories, Brenda Cossman

Cleveland State Law Review

I want to pick up on one of the themes running through virtually all of the papers in this symposium-the contradictory nature of law. Legal victories-and defeats-are always fragile, partial and contradictory. The perspective I bring to this theme is a Canadian one, where in the context of gay and lesbian struggles, legal victories now outweigh legal defeats. I will tell a story of these legal victories, which resulted in a much celebrated case in 1999 known as M v. H., in which the Supreme Court of Canada recognized the equality rights of same sex couples, and struck down a …

The Columbia River's Fate In The Twentieth Century, William L. Lang Jan 2000

The Columbia River's Fate In The Twentieth Century, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Discusses the history of the Columbia River during the 20th century, emphasizing the image of the river as both a source of industry and an example of wild natural beauty. In 1933 the river was dammed to harness its power for hydroelectricity and control its unpredictable flooding. With the completion of the dams in the 1970's, however, came problems with the edenic vision of the river, especially with the annual salmon run. By the late 20th century, the salmon had all but disappeared, leading to an ongoing conflict between supporters of the dams and conservationists.

The Impact Of A Summer Workshop: Staff Orientation At Mesa Community College, D. Sawada, J. Turley

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The Arizona Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (ACEPT) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project to reform teacher preparation in Arizona. One of the major modes for initiating both collaboration and reform between and among university and community college staff has been the Summer Faculty Enhancement Workshops developed and offered by ACEPT co-principal investigators each summer since 1996. The summer of 1999 featured five workshops, one of which was the Geology Summer Workshop which brought participants into close contact with eighteen reformed practices appropriate for large lecture style classes. One of the nineteen participants was Ray …

Composite And Comprehensive Multimedia Electronic Health Care Records, Nichola Jane Salmons Jan 2000

Composite And Comprehensive Multimedia Electronic Health Care Records, Nichola Jane Salmons

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The thesis considers the issue of multimedia data utilisation within modem health care delivery and the consequent need for an appropriate patient records system. The discussions centre upon the deployment and utilisation of IT systems, and paper-based patient records within health care establishments (HCEs), and the resultant problems, such as data duplication, inconsistency, unavailability and loss. Electronic Health Care Records (EHCRs) are put forward as a means of obviating the problems defined, and effectively supporting the future development of care provision in a coherent manner. The thesis identifies the barriers to further development of EHCRs with respect to clinical data …

The Disappearing Frame.: A Practice-Based Investigation Into Composing Virtual Environment Artworks, Thomas James Patrick Corby Jan 2000

The Disappearing Frame.: A Practice-Based Investigation Into Composing Virtual Environment Artworks, Thomas James Patrick Corby

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Through creative art making practice, research seeks to contribute a body of knowledge to an under researched area by examining how key concepts germane to computer based, interactive, three-dimensional, virtual environment artworks might be explicated, potential compositional issues characterised, and possible production strategies identified and/or proposed. Initial research summarises a range of classifications pertaining to the function of interactivity within virtual space, leading to an identification and analysis of a predominant model for composing virtual environment media, characterised as the "world as model": a methodological approach to devising interactive and spatial contexts employing visual and behavioural modes based on the …

More's Skill, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 2000

More's Skill, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

Robert Bolt chose a phrase from a sixteenth century poet named Robert Whittinton for the title of his modem play about Thomas More: "[A] man of an angel's wit and singular learning; I know not his fellow. For where is the man of that gentleness, lowliness, and affability? And as time requireth a man of marvellous mirth and pastimes; and sometimes of as sad gravity: a man for all seasons."

Bolt's title suggests that he took a gamble on the possibility that More would have modern, universal appeal. I have been interested in how that gamble worked out. If you …

Solo Piano Performances In London From 1837 To 1850: A Cultural And Musical Evolution., Lisa A. Withers Jan 2000

Solo Piano Performances In London From 1837 To 1850: A Cultural And Musical Evolution., Lisa A. Withers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Solo piano performances evolved into a unique form of public concert (the piano recital) during the early part of the nineteenth century. Social, intellectual and economic factors were involved in creating the conditions necessary for this evolution, and it was in London that the most significant early developments occurred. It is the premise of this study that the economic and social influence of the newly wealthy, English, upper middle class was instrumental in creating a cultural tradition of solo piano performances. The formation of a canon of pianistic works suitable for frequent performance was a direct result of this new …

An Overview Of Piano Sonatas Nos. 1 And 2 By Alfred Schnittke., Nozomi Yamaguchi Jan 2000

An Overview Of Piano Sonatas Nos. 1 And 2 By Alfred Schnittke., Nozomi Yamaguchi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Alfred Schnittke was a Russian composer who is regarded as one of the leading avant-garde composers of our time; he recently passed away in 1998. His prolific works were eclectic in a wide variety of genres and styles. He was particularly known for polystylicism, a coined word to describe a combination of different styles. Among such works are his piano sonatas, which deserve study and performance since they also represent an important contribution to the continuing genre in the twentieth-century. This document gives brief analyses of his first two piano sonatas. After Schnittke's biography and discussions of his major works, …
