Democratic Vistas For The Humanities, Richard J. Franke Jan 2000

Democratic Vistas For The Humanities, Richard J. Franke

Imagining America

Richard J. Franke, author, Cut from Whole Cloth, draws from his experience as founding chairman of the Chicago Humanities Festival and as CEO of John Nuveen and Company, to tackle the question, “How do we bring scholars and artists to a larger audience?” Stepping back, he also asks, “Why is it important to reach a larger audience?”

Franke argues here that the humanities can best train citizens to make the complex political, social, and moral decisions that constitute a healthy democracy. Not only are the humanities crucial to the political and social spheres, but also to the professional world where …

The literary works by so-called Beur writers have gained little recognition in most critical studies. It is as if these works have been confined to the space which produced them, the suburbs, symbol of marginality and illegitimacy. The present article proposes a new concept, «litterature naturelle», in an effort to define Beur literature as well as other writings presenting similar characteristics.

The short story is very much alive in Haitian literature, most especially among women writers. As a favorite genre for describing insecurity on the sociocultural, political and identity level, it reflects the difficult circumstances in which short story writers labor and the obstacles that they encounter in finding a publisher, an audience, in a word, a place in the disporic field of Haitian literature. In particular, the short story genre allows for a formal, stylistic and structural hybridity that suits the writers' desire to experiment with narration even as they seek an appropriate voice.

(1993) in light

of their «Americanness» and their relations to the writings of the Afro- American writers Chester Himes and James Baldwin. The «Americanness»

of Laferriere's novels is apparent in the recurrence of typical American themes and characters and in the exploitation of proper nouns, myths and cliches that are specific to North America. Although Chester Himes' popular fiction appears to influence some of the stylistic and …

Worth Their Salt, Too, Colleen Whitley Jan 2000

Worth Their Salt, Too, Colleen Whitley

All USU Press Publications

A follow-up to the highly successful Worth Their Salt, published in 1996, Worth Their Salt, Too brings together a new set of biographies of women whose roles in Utah's history have not been fully recognized, despite their significance to the social and cultural matrix, past and present, of the state. These women-community and government leaders, activists, artists, writers, scholars, politicians, and others-made important contributions to the state's history and culture. Some of them had experiences that reveal new aspects of the state's history, while others simply led lives so interesting that their stories beg to be told. This new collection …

Comparing Nca Standards And School-To-Work: Standards Based Foundations For The High School Communication Classroom, David Wendt, Melissa L. Beall Jan 2000

Comparing Nca Standards And School-To-Work: Standards Based Foundations For The High School Communication Classroom, David Wendt, Melissa L. Beall

Iowa Journal of Communication

The authors explore ways School-to-Work ideology and the NCA K-12 standards can be used in the classroom. They first call for an educational reform that is both student-centered as well as teacher-centered. It is argued that skills needed in the workplace correlate well with the N CA standards, and traditional exercises and projects can be utilized to cover the learning and application of communication skills. The authors then provide sample activities to help teachers make the connection between NCA standards and School-to-Career strategies.

Celebrities and the media possess a unique relationship. Many celebrities skillfully use the media to market and advertise their movies, television shows, books, and records. They use the media to propel their careers and create a marketable celebrity image. Society is celebrity crazed and magazines, tabloids and other media forms such as Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood have combined to feed that craze. Our society's hunger for celebrities has spawned the existence of photographers known as the paparazzi. Armed with zoom lenses, high-powered microphones, and the promise of huge cash rewards for an exclusive celebrity expose, the paparazzi have become …
