Integrating Location And Logistics Models, Agatino La Rosa Dec 2000

Integrating Location And Logistics Models, Agatino La Rosa

Doctoral Dissertations

Economic geographers investigate facility location problems by applying procedures derived from the classical location theory. These conventional procedures focus on the analysis of the tradeoffs between facility and transportation decisions, and provide solutions to location problems that minimize distance-based cost components. The classical approach leads to basic shortcomings when applied to physical distribution problems. Furthermore, the GIS industry shows little attention to physical distribution problems and the manipulation of logistics data is difficult in out-of-box GIS products. Logistics decision-makers attempt to optimize their distribution systems by performing the tradeoff analysis among facility, inventory and transportation decisions. In addition, the minimization …

A Study Of Interactions Between Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Α-Factor And Its G Protein-Coupled Receptor, Ste2p, Byung-Kwon Lee Dec 2000

A Study Of Interactions Between Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Α-Factor And Its G Protein-Coupled Receptor, Ste2p, Byung-Kwon Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

During the life cycle of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, haploid cells of opposite mating type can fuse during sexual conjugation to form a diploid cell. In preparation for conjugation, haploid cells secrete small diffusible peptide molecules [α-factor, a tridecapeptide pheromone and a-factor, a modified dodecapeptide pheromone] that specifically bind to cell surface receptors found on the opposite mating type cell. The basic structure of the receptors (Ste2p for α-factor and Ste3p for a-factor) is evolutionarily conserved and places them among the 7-transmembrane, G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Part 1 of this dissertation is an overview of the structure …

For the sample thin film presented here, the overall film density was found to be (0.55 ± 0.01) g/cm3 with a pore wall density of (1.16 ± 0.05) g/cm3 and a porosity of (53 ± 1) %. The average dimension for the pores was …

Estimation Of Absorbed Fraction To The Anterior Nose From Inhaled Beta Emitters, Hanna M. Moussa Dec 2000

Estimation Of Absorbed Fraction To The Anterior Nose From Inhaled Beta Emitters, Hanna M. Moussa

Doctoral Dissertations

The main purpose of this research is to introduce a new and more realistic geometry for the anterior nose region (ET1) as an alternative to the one provided in ICRP Publication 66. For a more accurate estimation of electron absorbed fraction (AF) to the nuclei of basal cells in the ET1 region, the proposed new geometry (frustum of a cone) replaces the cylinder geometry, which was used in ICRP 66.

Since the electron absorbed fraction (AF) data in ICRP 66 are calculated based on the nose size for an adult Caucasian male, a second purpose of this …

College men and women are afforded more freedom than ever before to make decisions about their future lives. However, even when men and women start with similar characteristics, in many cases they are still making different life choices. The problem is to identify values, priorities, or circumstances that may influence or limit the life choices of men and women. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare how male and female college students constructed their life paths. Through semi-structured interviews, this study examined the goals and priorities of 32 college juniors and seniors by examining the choices they …

Enu-Induced Mutations Reveal Quaking Functions In Embryogenesis And Postnatal Myelination, Janice K. Noveroske Dec 2000

Enu-Induced Mutations Reveal Quaking Functions In Embryogenesis And Postnatal Myelination, Janice K. Noveroske

Doctoral Dissertations

Since the discovery of the mouse quaking viable allele (qkv) in 1964, researchers have attempted to elucidate the function of quaking in postnatal brain myelination. More recently, a critical role for quaking in embryogenesis was revealed, but little has been determined on how the loss of quaking function leads to embryonic death. In the work presented here, we report that the defect in the embryonic lethal qkk2 allele is a T to A trans version in the KH domain, and that homozygous qkk2 mutant embryos die from cardiovascular defects. Antibodies against the vascular endothelial marker …

Different Behavior Versus Differential Opportunity To Observe : Factors Associated With Inter-Rater Agreement Within A 360-Degree Appraisal Process, Mark Rohricht Dec 2000

Different Behavior Versus Differential Opportunity To Observe : Factors Associated With Inter-Rater Agreement Within A 360-Degree Appraisal Process, Mark Rohricht

Doctoral Dissertations

The explanations for performance appraisal rating disagreement between supervisors and subordinates center on one of the following four perspectives; raters have different opportunities to observe performance, raters have different expectations, raters use different scales, and raters have different constructs of performance appraisal dimensions. An alternative, and much simpler, explanation for rating disagreement is that the ratee behaves differently when interacting with different raters; therefore, the raters rate the ratee differently. The purpose of this study was to explore and better understand rating differences in a 360-degree performance appraisal context. Specifically, this study examined rating differences between supervisors and subordinates as …

Black Box Search : Framework And Methods, Chris W. Schumacher Dec 2000

Black Box Search : Framework And Methods, Chris W. Schumacher

Doctoral Dissertations

A theoretical framework is constructed to analyze the behavior of all determin-istic non-repeating search algorithms as they apply to all possible functions of a given finite domain and range. A population table data structure is introduced for this purpose, and many properties of the framework are discovered, including the number of deterministic non-repeating search algorithms. Canonical forms are pre-sented for all elements of the framework, as well as methods for converting between the objects and their canonical numbers and back again. The theorems regarding population tables allow for a simple, alternate form of the No Free Lunch (NFL) theorem, an …

The Relationship Between Chronic Hassles, Cardiovascular Responsivity And Physical Health Symptomatology: An Examination Of The Allostatic Model Of Stress And Health, Zachary Clay Wilcox Dec 2000

The Relationship Between Chronic Hassles, Cardiovascular Responsivity And Physical Health Symptomatology: An Examination Of The Allostatic Model Of Stress And Health, Zachary Clay Wilcox

Doctoral Dissertations

Homeostasis has been the central model in physiology and therapeutics in modern medicine. Allostasis, a new model, has been put forth as a replacement for homeostasis. According to the allostatic model, health is defined in terms of the ability to respond to demands. Thus, in contrast to the homeostatic model, the allostatic model views responsiveness in a positive light. The allostatic model was examined by observing the relationships between chronic hassles, cardiovascular responsiveness to an emotional interview and physical health symptomatology in a sample of 64 female undergraduates. As expected, chronic hassles scores were predictive of health symptomatology. In addition, …

Theory And Experiment Of High-Speed Cross-Gain Modulation In Semiconductor Lasers, Xiaomin Jin, T. Keating, Shun-Lien Chuang

Electrical Engineering

We present theory and experiment for the high-speed modulation response of a quantum-well (QW) laser in the presence of an external microwave modulated optical pump in the gain region. The model includes the effects of pump-induced stimulated recombination and cross-gain saturation. Expressions for the small-signal modulation response of the test laser under gain modulation are derived. We also present experimental results using a multiple-QW InGaAlAs Fabry-Perot (FP) laser at 1.552 μm as the test laser and an external pump by a 1.542 μm DFB laser. Comparison between electrical modulation and optical cross-gain modulation (XGM) of the test laser is also …

Grading Error Reduces Grower Incentive To Increase Prune Quality, Jennifer S. James, James A. Chalfant, Nathalie Lavoie, Richard J. Sexton Dec 2000

Grading Error Reduces Grower Incentive To Increase Prune Quality, Jennifer S. James, James A. Chalfant, Nathalie Lavoie, Richard J. Sexton

Agribusiness

Grading is important to ensure the production of high-quality foods, but It Is usually done with error, distorting market signals and diminishing Incentives to produce high-quality products. Size is the main quality criterion for dried prunes and the crucial characteristic In determining prune value. We studied the economic effects of errors In commodity grading, focusing In particular on the Implications of one-way (asymmetric) grading errors, namely when small, low quality product Is erroneously classified as high quality, but not vice versa. In an application to the California prune Industry, we estimated the extent to which large prunes are undervalued and …

Modeling High-Frequency Seafloor Backscattering Of Gassy Sediments: The Eel River Margin Case, Luciano E. Fonseca, Larry A. Mayer

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Models of acoustic backscatter typically take into account two different processes: interface scattering and volume scattering. What happens to these two contributions when the sediment is charged with gas bubbles? For the interface backscatter contribution we adopted the model developed by Jackson et al. (1986), but added modifications to accommodate gas bubbles, which when present, even in very small quantities, can dominate the acoustic characteristics of the sediment. The model parameters that are affected by gas content are the density ratio, the sound speed ratio and the loss parameter. To a first approximation, the model roughness parameters are not influenced …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

We use new models for present‐day Pacific‐North America motion to evaluate the tectonics of offshore regions west of the Californias. Vandenburg in coastal Alta California moves at the Pacific plate velocity within uncertainties (∼1 mm/yr) after correcting for strain accumulation on the San Andreas and San Gregorio‐Hosgri faults with a model that includes a viscoelastic lower crust. Modeled and measured velocities at coastal sites in Baja California south of the Agua Blanca fault, a region that most previous models consider Pacific plate, differ by 3–8 mm/yr, with coastal sites moving slower that the Pacific plate. We interpret these discrepancies in …
