Intrinsic Motivation As A Core To Educational Achievement, Amy E. Carman Jan 2000

Intrinsic Motivation As A Core To Educational Achievement, Amy E. Carman

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Every child has the right to learn, but not every child has the opportunity to learn. It is my belief that the elements suggested in this paper promote intrinsic motivation within the classroom and can give all children an opportunity. By empowering children to enjoy the challenges of academic achievement they will be reaching their highest potential. In this paper I examine five main points: 1. The definition of intrinsic motivation 2. The compatibility of extrinsic rewards and intrinsic reactions in education 3. Teaching methods that induce intrinsic motivation 4. Evaluating core characteristics of those teaching methods 5. Multiculturalism and …

The survey administered measured perceptions of sexual harassment using 17 dependent variables which assessed attitudes toward hostile work environment and quid pro quo sexual harassment. The study found that differences do exist in perceptions of sexual harassment based on biological sex of the respondents and the biological sex of the sexual harassment target. The study also found that there are significant positive correlations between perceptions of sexual harassment and the variables of age and number of years in the workforce. This study found no significant differences …

Natural Law, Marriage, And The Thought Of Karol Wojtyla, John J. Coughlin

Journal Articles

This Article examines the loss of the natural law perspective from legal theory and the movement towards liberal theory. The Article continues by analyzing two features of the natural law tradition as described in the philosophical writings of Karol Wojtyla. The first feature concerns marriage and family as the fundamental human community. The second considers marriage as a virtuous relationship. The Article concludes with practical suggestions for the legal profession and legal education with regard to counseling clients about marriage.

Portuguese-Americans And Mental Health Treatment Client-Therapist Ethnic Match, Ethnic Identity, And Satisfaction With Treatment, Katherine B. Gamble Jan 2000

Portuguese-Americans And Mental Health Treatment Client-Therapist Ethnic Match, Ethnic Identity, And Satisfaction With Treatment, Katherine B. Gamble

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Multicultural issues in psychotherapy have increasingly been recognized as important in the provision of mental health services to our diverse population. Issues such as beliefs about mental health, attitudes toward authority, and even world view affect how clients access and make use of psychotherapy. Cultural views are essential to how one sees the world, and consequently there is much debate about whether clients would benefit from having therapists from the same cultural background. Ethnic identity, or the degree to which a person holds to the beliefs of their culture of origin, consequently plays an important role in psychotherapy. The Portuguese …

Application Of Computer-Based Technology To The Teaching Of Writing In Spanish As A Foreign Language: A Case Study, Nuria Gago Jan 2000

Application Of Computer-Based Technology To The Teaching Of Writing In Spanish As A Foreign Language: A Case Study, Nuria Gago

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Computers are becoming more and more important in today's world. They are part of every sector of our society, including education. Most of the studies done so far on computer integration with educational purposes focus on the classification, and incorporation, from a theoretical point of view, of Computer Mediated Communication in the class. Unfortunately, very little empirical research has been done concerning the students' perspectives and reactions when introduced to the use of multimedia technology in the classroom. The present project was started in an effort to analyze and observer the reactions of a group of learners when exposed, in …

A Model For A Fles Program In Morgantown, West Virginia., Isabel Cristina Cadavid-Munera Jan 2000

A Model For A Fles Program In Morgantown, West Virginia., Isabel Cristina Cadavid-Munera

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There is an increasing interest in the development and implementation of foreign language programs in elementary school throughout the U.S. However, as some experts on the field of teaching foreign languages to children have pointed out, very often those programs are implemented without prior planning or thorough investigation. The present study was conducted in five schools in Morgantown, West Virginia, in order to determine the major strengths and weaknesses of the foreign language after school classes currently carried out at those schools. Questionnaires (to parents, classroom teachers, Spanish instructors, and site coordinators), class observations and interviews were the ethnographic techniques …

Teacher Training Through Literature: Building Teacher Awareness On The Process Of Shift In Identity On Esl Learners., Luis Ruiz J. Vazquez Jan 2000

Teacher Training Through Literature: Building Teacher Awareness On The Process Of Shift In Identity On Esl Learners., Luis Ruiz J. Vazquez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this work I defend the notion of the necessity for ESL learners to undergo some sort of identity shift process. This process would be a smooth and gradual evolution by reason of which ESL learners (and, by extension, learners of any foreign language) would develop a second identity that would encompass all the aspects associated to the L2 of their choice, apart from its exclusively linguistic and structural components. I introduce mainly the necessity of building awareness among teachers, especially—but not exclusively—among monolingual foreign language instructors. The strategy that I propose to promote this awareness is the guided reading …

Dads Do Matter: Relationship Between Father-Child Interaction And Child Social Anxiety., Laurie Ann Greco Jan 2000

Dads Do Matter: Relationship Between Father-Child Interaction And Child Social Anxiety., Laurie Ann Greco

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To date, research investigating parental influences contributing to the development of social anxiety has focused on maternal characteristics and the mother-child relationship. The role of fathers in the development of childhood-onset psychopathology has received relative inattention (e.g., Phares, 1996) and remains virtually unexplored within the realm of social anxiety. This study focused on identifying both maternal and paternal factors that may impact the development and maintenance of social anxiety experienced by school-aged children. Forty-eight (22 high socially anxious, 26 low socially anxious) children and their fathers completed self-report questionnaires, and father-child interactions during a ten-minute challenging task were conducted. Consistent …

An Examination Of Existing Caregiving Models And Male Spousal Caregivers., Kristi A. Barnes Jan 2000

An Examination Of Existing Caregiving Models And Male Spousal Caregivers., Kristi A. Barnes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As part of a larger study examining well-being among older West Virginia residents, male spousal caregivers (n = 30) and their non-caregiving counterparts (n = 99) were compared on self-reports of physical and psychological well-being, and appraisals of social support. Demographic trends suggest the importance of examining the caregiving situation among females, the traditional caregivers, and male caregivers who are growing in numbers. The data revealed few differences between caregivers and non-caregivers, chronological age was not a factor. This suggests that the male and female caregiving experience are not consistent. Given the growing percentage of male caregivers and the demand …

The Effect Of Providing Bedding Encasings On Adherence To Dust Mite Control Procedures In Pediatric Asthma Patients., Karen Elizabeth Joseph Jan 2000

The Effect Of Providing Bedding Encasings On Adherence To Dust Mite Control Procedures In Pediatric Asthma Patients., Karen Elizabeth Joseph

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of providing allergen-control bedding encasings on encasing utilization for children with asthma and dust mite allergy. Twenty parents of such children were assigned to an intervention group, which received dust mite proof covers upon recruitment, or a control group, which did not. Two to three months after recruitment, parent report and observational measures were obtained during a home visit. The intervention group used the encasings, but not other dust mite control strategies, significantly more than the control group, based on parent report, not observation. Use of dust mite proof …

Culture-Specific Issues In Feminist Voices: A Comparative Study Of "The Bell Jar" And "Cronica Del Desamor"., Sonia Lagunas Jan 2000

Culture-Specific Issues In Feminist Voices: A Comparative Study Of "The Bell Jar" And "Cronica Del Desamor"., Sonia Lagunas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis discusses the importance of the cultural elements within a literary text when an analysis of the text is accomplished. Two novels are analyzed in terms of their cultural setting: The Bell Jar , an American novel set in the 1950s written by Sylvia Plath, and Crónica del desamor , a Spanish novel set in the late 1970s, written by Rosa Montero. A cultural analysis of the novels appears necessary in order to develop a more comprehensive understanding of them. At the same time, a cultural analysis based on literary works is a valuable instrument in investigating the cultural …

Language Attitude Study: The Perceptions Of The New Jersey And The Southern West Virginia Students, At West Virginia University, Of The New Jersey And Southern West Virginia Dialects., Leigh Anne Scalise Jan 2000

Language Attitude Study: The Perceptions Of The New Jersey And The Southern West Virginia Students, At West Virginia University, Of The New Jersey And Southern West Virginia Dialects., Leigh Anne Scalise

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The language attitude study of the two dialect groups: New Jersey and southern West Virginia on the West Virginia University, encompasses the lexicon of each group and the breakdown of communication between the two groups. The differences in lexicon and societal stereotypes keep the two groups from interacting on a personal and equal level of respect and kindness. The West Virginia students foster a strong resentment towards the students from New Jersey, and the feelings are reciprocated in that the New Jersey students prefer to associate with students from their home state. The dialect study proves the members of each …
