Cross Racial Preferences In Viewing Sexually Explicit Material:A Comparison Bewteen African-American And Caucasian Males., Boyd Randal Horton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated that extent to which the race of actors in an erotic video affected sexual arousal in African-American and Caucasian heterosexual males. It was hypothesized that the two racial groups would be significantly more sexually aroused while watching their respective homoethnic erotic video. The htpothesis was grounded in the modeling effects of Bandura's Social Leaning Theory(1977),the Matching Hypothesis(1982)and worldview differences between African-Americans and Caucasians(Baldwin and Bell,1985.Thirty-four African-American and Caucasian males were shown homoethnic and non-homethnic erotic videos while penile circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and self-report ratings of sexual arousal were measured. In addition, sexual attitude measures and an xultural identity questionnaire …

Black And White Undergraduate Resident University Students' Stages Of Intercultural Sensitivity And Racial Identity At Indiana State University, Kenneth Darryl Coopwood

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The summary report of the 1996 climate study conducted at Indiana State University revealed that the campus could appropriately be termed chilly”. The study further revealed that only 54% of Black students and 74.9% of White students would recommend the university to another potential student. The ability to survive in chilly” climates has many determinants rooted in students' ability to identify with self (Tatum, 1997). However, since there were no or inaccurate references to student present identities, retention-based programmatic developments thought to be central to student perceptions of campus life were perceived to be in vain. The use of cognitive …

Effectiveness Of The Infusion Of Reading Component Model Based Remedial Reading Instruction On The Reading Achievement Of Students In Learning Disabilities And Title I Remedial Reading Programs, Sonja O'Lita Frantz

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study tested the effectiveness of the infusion of remedial reading instruction, derived from the Reading Component Model, on the reading achievement of children in learning disabilities and Title I classrooms. The Reading Component Model is based on the premise that the reading process is composed of two major components, word recognition and comprehension, and poor functioning of either component can affect reading performance. Remedial instruction based on the component model focuses and tailors instruction on the weak component. In contrast, the discrepancy model, a model that is predominant in U.S. schools, classifies students into two categories: those with …

The Effects Of Placement And Instruction In Resource Rooms On Reading Achievement And Measured Intelligence (Iq) Of Elementary School Children In Learning Disability Programs, Kwesi Ewusi Bentum

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study is an attempt to examine long term effects of learning disability instruction and resource room placement on reading achievement. The study also examines the level of cognitive functioning (IQ) of students identified as having reading disability who had been placed in resource rooms over periods of three and six years. Using initial evaluation data on students' reading achievement and level of cognitive functioning (IQ test scores) as a base, the effects of instructional and placement for periods of three and six years were studied on the basis of changes in these variables. Two groups of elementary grade …

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of the chief academic officer and the chief student affairs officers at public and private Indiana baccalaureate institutions, and to determine what programs, practices, and policies those four officers groups perceive as important, which ones are available at the officers' institutions, and then how effective the officers perceived them to be. Traditional Classroom Versus Distance Learning Approaches In Providing Eduactaion For Students At The College Of Applied Science And Technology At Rit, Ryan Griske

Theses

This thesis discusses the current controversial issue of traditional classroom vs. distance learning approaches in higher education institutions using a case study in the College of Applied Science and Technology at RIT. The most important question addressed in the thesis is, "Are distance learning methods effective for addressing university-level learning goals?" (Kathleen Davey, 1999, p. 45). There are currently many disputes between educational researchers on this issue. The first four chapters cover details of the proposal stage as previously approved by the Thesis Committee. Chapter One briefly introduces this issue and several important terms used throughout the thesis (e.g., distance …

Variations In Mediation: How - And Why - Legal Mediators Change Styles In The Course Of A Case, Dwight Golann Jan 2000

Variations In Mediation: How - And Why - Legal Mediators Change Styles In The Course Of A Case, Dwight Golann

Journal of Dispute Resolution

I will seek to show in this article that professional legal mediators in fact use a variety of styles, and that they change their approach constantly during a single mediation, even within a single meeting with a disputant. I will argue that these stylistic changes are the norm rather than the exception in the mediation of civil legal disputes and that the use of evaluative techniques is also frequent, even among those mediators who favor a broad, facilitative approach. Finally, I will describe the contrasting styles that the filmed mediators used in the same dispute and argue that these variations …

Turning The Ship Of State, Jeffrey M. Senger Jan 2000

Turning The Ship Of State, Jeffrey M. Senger

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In his thoughtful article on the future of ADR, Professor Frank Sander notes, "On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I think we've made amazing progress. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, ADR seems more like a grain of sand on the adversary system beach."' In the federal government, I believe things are somewhat better than that. Perhaps five days out of seven I am impressed with the progress of the government in implementing ADR, particularly in the last ten years, which I will describe below. The other two days, like Professor Sander, I become more discouraged as we run into one of …

Is Binding Arbitration A Form Of Adr: An Argument That The Term Adr Has Begun To Outlive Its Usefulness, Jean R. Sternlight Jan 2000

Is Binding Arbitration A Form Of Adr: An Argument That The Term Adr Has Begun To Outlive Its Usefulness, Jean R. Sternlight

Journal of Dispute Resolution

While the semantic question may be uninteresting, I suggest that it is useful to ask the normative question of how we should categorize binding arbitration.'7 Again, there may be no clear "right" answer. Nevertheless, addressing the question of the appropriate categorization of binding arbitration provides a good means for rethinking the nature of binding arbitration, what we mean by ADR, and how the variety of dispute resolution techniques typically grouped together as ADR relate to litigation. Artificially grouping these disparate processes together under the "ADR" umbrella is beginning to prove problematic. While we may continue to use the phrase in …

Transforming Cultural Conflict In An Age Of Complexity, Michelle Lebaron Jan 2000

Transforming Cultural Conflict In An Age Of Complexity, Michelle Lebaron

All Faculty Publications

This article will survey several definitions of culture, arguing that the most useful approach is to define culture broadly and to recognize its significance to most or all conflicts. Some of the ways that culture affects conflicts will be outlined, accompanied by examples. These include: culture as a lens that both facilitates and blocks effective communication; culture and world view differences as the subject of conflicts; and conflicts related to identity and recognition as facets of cultural differences. Further discussed are Western models of third party intervention, inviting readers to examine the values and assumptions underlying them. Challenges inherent in …
