The Victimization Of Juvenile Prostitutes In Ethiopia, Kevin Lalor Jan 2000

The Victimization Of Juvenile Prostitutes In Ethiopia, Kevin Lalor

Articles

This paper quantifies the victimisation experienced by 30 juvenile prostitutes in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Seventy three per cent had been raped at least once and ninety three per cent had been beaten in the course of their work. Only 50% used contraception, resulting in a pregnancy rate of 37%. Findings indicate that prostitution is a highly victimogenic lifestyle, fostered by conditions of extreme deprivation. Policy and practice implications are discussed.

The Self-Destruction Of Yugoslavia, Dejan Guzina Jan 2000

The Self-Destruction Of Yugoslavia, Dejan Guzina

Political Science Faculty Publications

The self-destructiveness of the former Yugoslav federal system has not yet received its appropriate place in numerous accounts of the causes of Yugoslavia’s disintegration. This essay explores the self-destructive mechanism of the former Yugoslav socialist federal system. Its main thesis is that it was the institutional composition of the former Yugoslavia that was largely responsible for the cleavages in the 1980s, which caused the mutually exclusive ethnic nationalisms of today. In other words, the crisis, the subsequent ethnonational homogenization and the dissolution of the federal state were a natural outcome of the constitutional foundations of the system. When in the …

On Some Length Biased Inequalities For Reliability Measures, Broderick O. Oluyede Jan 2000

On Some Length Biased Inequalities For Reliability Measures, Broderick O. Oluyede

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this note, inequalities for length biased and the original residual life function and equilibrium distribution function with monotone hazard rate and mean residual life functions are derived. We also obtain estimates of the length biased probability density function and hazard function under random censoring. Finally, the Bayesian exponential reliability estimate under length biased sampling using a conjugate prior for the scale parameter is given.

Discrimination Based On Hiv/Aids And Other Conditions: "Disability" As Defined Under Federal And State Law, Lawrence O. Gostin, David W. Webber Jan 2000

Discrimination Based On Hiv/Aids And Other Conditions: "Disability" As Defined Under Federal And State Law, Lawrence O. Gostin, David W. Webber

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this Article, we examine the disability definition "problem" from the standpoint of HIV infection, specifically HIV infection in its "asymptomatic" phase . . . We begin by summarizing the need for federal nondiscrimination standards offering protection for individuals with HIV. We then provide a brief discussion of the definition of disability under the resulting legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). We summarize the early judicial and administrative views of the ADA as protecting individuals with HIV. We next turn to judicial interpretation of the ADA in cases in which that understanding has been disputed, including, most …

Development Of The Random Amplified Polymorphic Dna (Rapd) Technique To Measure The Effects Of Genotoxinsin Aquatic Organisms, Franck Andre Atienzar Jan 2000

Development Of The Random Amplified Polymorphic Dna (Rapd) Technique To Measure The Effects Of Genotoxinsin Aquatic Organisms, Franck Andre Atienzar

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Studies were undertaken to evaluate the potential of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) to detect DNA effects (including DNA damage and mutations) in aquatic invertebrates, following their exposure to a variety of environmental contaminants under laboratory conditions. After rigorous optimisation of the RAPD method, the protocol, which used a high annealing temperature (50"C for 10-mer primers), was found to generate good-quality DNA profiles from groups of organisms belonging to the bacterial, plant and animal kingdoms. The RAPD method was initially used to detect benzo(a)pyrene [B(a)P] and copper-induced DNA effects in the water flea Daphnia magna and ultraviolet-mediated DNA effects in …

Introducing Negotiation And Drafting Into The Contracts Classroom, Carol Chomsky, Maury Landsman Jan 2000

Introducing Negotiation And Drafting Into The Contracts Classroom, Carol Chomsky, Maury Landsman

Articles

It is by now almost a commonplace to say that the first year of law school should include skills-focused opportunities in addition to the massive doses of legal doctrine and analysis that form the core of the first year curriculum. 1 Understanding contracts only through the lens of litigated disputes gives students a very limited picture of what lawyers do with respect to contracts and little opportunity to develop the skills of effective representation and artful and precise drafting needed to avoid such litigation. Moreover, the necessary emphasis on contract doctrine may obscure the degree to which many contract-related problems …

The Sounds Of Silence: The Libertarian Ethos Of Erisa Preemption, Stephen F. Befort, Christopher J. Kopka

Articles

In the Winter of 1996, the Harvard Journal on Legislation published an article entitled in part, The Last Article About the Language of ERISA Preemption?' Absent the question mark, one might have thought it a bold (and hopefully accurate) statement. Yet, as the question mark suggests, no scholar has been able to provide the definitive answer regarding the scope of ERISA preemption.

Ray, D. E. Day, George Daniel Waddill, P. G. Allen, C. H. Booth, J. J. Bucher, D. L. Caulder, D. K. Shuh, M. Grimsditch, M.-L. Saboungi

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The local structure of iron and uranium ions in a series of iron phosphate glasses with the general composition (40 - x)Fe2O3-xUO2-60P2O5 and (1-x-y)(40Fe2O3-60P2O5)-xUO2-y(Na2O or CaO) was investigated using Fe K-edge and U LIII-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Replacing Fe2O3 by UO2 in the glass caused more distortion in the coordination environment of Fe(III) ions. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure fits revealed that the Fe-P bonds observed in the base glass also …

Crystal And Magnetic Structures Of Lani₅₋ₓmnₓ, Chiu-Ying Tai, G. K. Marasinghe, Oran Allan Pringle, William Joseph James, Muguo Chen, William B. Yelon, I. Dubenko, Naushad Ali, Ph. I'Héritier Jan 2000

Crystal And Magnetic Structures Of Lani₅₋ₓmnₓ, Chiu-Ying Tai, G. K. Marasinghe, Oran Allan Pringle, William Joseph James, Muguo Chen, William B. Yelon, I. Dubenko, Naushad Ali, Ph. I'Héritier

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The crystallographic and magnetic properties of LaN5-xMnx with x = 1, 1.5, and 2, have been investigated using x-ray and neutron diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer and superconducting quantum interference device measurements. All the samples crystallize in the hexagonal CaCu5-type (P6/mmm) structure. Manganese atoms preferentially occupy the 3 g site in the LaNi5 structure. The bulk magnetization of the LaNi5-xMnx powder samples decreases rapidly as nickel is replaced by manganese. A ferrimagnetic model is applied to describe the magnetic structure of the LaNi5-xMnx samples for x = 1.5 and …

Spatial Variation In Zooplankton Size And Taxonomic Community Structure Along A 50ºn To 50°S Transect Of The Atlantic, Rachel Sarah Woodd-Walker Jan 2000

Spatial Variation In Zooplankton Size And Taxonomic Community Structure Along A 50ºn To 50°S Transect Of The Atlantic, Rachel Sarah Woodd-Walker

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Zooplankton play a vital role in the world's oceans in terms of transport of carbon out of the surface layer and providing food for fish. Zooplankton are patchily distributed on all scales, and this has important consequences for both sampling and understanding their role in the ocean. The distribution of zooplankton on different scales forms the focus of this study. Three Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) cruises were carried out and data made available from three previous cruises. Zoo plankton data were collected using a combination of vertical nets and using an optical plankton counter (OPC) sampling from the pumped seawater …

From Rivers To Oceans: A Comparison Of Contrasting Aquatic Ecosystems Using Benthic Size Spectra, Ahmed El-Sayed Ahmed Abada Jan 2000

From Rivers To Oceans: A Comparison Of Contrasting Aquatic Ecosystems Using Benthic Size Spectra, Ahmed El-Sayed Ahmed Abada

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

This thesis uses a range of different size spectra to compare contrasting benthic habitats in the aquatic realm. Temporal and spatial variation in benthic size spectra were investigated across a full salinity gradient (i.e. from freshwater, through estuarine to marine) in the River Yealm, south Devon, in order to gauge the influence of large differences in taxonomy and evolutionary history. Abundance and biomass size spectra showed a similar pattern among sites in all seasons but winter, suggesting that the size structure of benthic communities may be similar in sites with very different community compositions. A subsequent study comparing size spectra …
