Adult Kawasaki Disease, Hamdi H. Shelleh, Sarosh A. Khan, Latif A. Khan, Hussni Al-Hateeti, Samar Iqbal, Abdul F. Saleh

Saudi Medical Journal

Kawasaki disease was first described from Japan in 1967. Most of the patients reported have been under 3 years of age. We are reporting a typical case of Kawasaki disease in an adult Yemeni male, who had all criteria for diagnosis. Additionally our patient had tricuspid regurgitation as well as tricuspid valve endocarditis, which is only rarely reported in literature. We also noted a rise in monocyte and eosinophil count up to 10%, which may have pathophysiologic significance in this disease. At two year follow up our patient had persistent right bundle branch black which he had developed during the …

Equitable Self-Ownership For Animals, David Favre Nov 2000

Equitable Self-Ownership For Animals, David Favre

Duke Law Journal

This Article proposes a new use of existing property law concepts to change the juristic personhood status of animals. Presently, animals are classified as personal property, which gives them no status or standing in the legal system for the protection or promotion of their interests. Professor Favre suggest that it is possible and appropriate to divide living property into its legal and equitable components, and then to transfer the equitable title of an animal from the legal title holder to the animal herself. This would create a new, limited form of self-ownership in an animal, an equitably self-owned animal. Such …

Seeking Transformative Justice For Women: Views From Canada, Karlene Faith Nov 2000

Seeking Transformative Justice For Women: Views From Canada, Karlene Faith

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the article:

My purpose here is to situate gender as a key factor in a historical movement toward prison abolition. A shift toward restorative or transformative justice, theoretically, is reintegrative in that it benefits the offender, the victim and the community. The first offenders to be diverted from prison to any new program are generally those with the least serious offences and/or those who pose no risk of committing violence; women commonly fall into this category, but, as discussed, very few community alternatives exist for them. The last section addresses some of the key issues facing women in prison, …

Application Of Tree-Structured Regression For Regional Precipitation Prediction Using General Circulation Model Output, Xiangshang Li, David J. Sailor Nov 2000

Application Of Tree-Structured Regression For Regional Precipitation Prediction Using General Circulation Model Output, Xiangshang Li, David J. Sailor

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study presents a tree-structured regression (TSR) method to relate daily precipitation with a variety of free-atmosphere variables. Historical data were used to identify distinct weather patterns associated with differing types of precipitation events. Models were developed using 67% of the data for training and the remaining data for model validation. Seasonal models were built for each of 2 US sites: San Francisco, California, and San Antonio, Texas. The average correlation between observed and simulated daily precipitation data series is 0.75 for the training set and 0.68 for the validation set. Relative humidity was found to be the dominant variable …

Automated Systematic Testing For Constraint-Based Interactive Services, Patrice Godefroid, Lalita Jategaonkar Jagadeesan, Radha Jagadeesan, Konstantin Laufer

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Constraint-based languages can express in a concise way the complex logic of a new generation of interactive services for applications such as banking or stock trading, that must support multiple types of interfaces for accessing the same data. These include automatic speech-recognition interfaces where inputs may be provided in any order by users of the service. We study in this paper how to systematically test event-driven applications developed using such languages. We show how such applications can be tested automatically, without the need for any manually-written test cases, and effi- ciently, by taking advantage of their capability of taking unordered …

Spaceflight Effects On Single Skeletal Muscle Fiber Function In The Rhesus Monkey, Robert H. Fitts, Dominique Desplanches, Janell Romatowski, Jeffrey J. Widrick Nov 2000

Spaceflight Effects On Single Skeletal Muscle Fiber Function In The Rhesus Monkey, Robert H. Fitts, Dominique Desplanches, Janell Romatowski, Jeffrey J. Widrick

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this investigation was to understand how 14 days of weightlessness alters the cellular properties of individual slow- and fast-twitch muscle fibers in the rhesus monkey. The diameter of the soleus (Sol) type I, medial gastrocnemius (MG) type I, and MG type II fibers from the vivarium controls averaged 60 ± 1, 46 ± 2, and 59 ± 2 µm, respectively. Both a control 1-G capsule sit (CS) and spaceflight (SF) significantly reduced the Sol type I fiber diameter (20 and 13%, respectively) and peak force, with the latter declining from 0.48 ± 0.01 to 0.31 ± 0.02 …

Her Mistress’S Voice: Gynophonocentrism In Feminist Discourses, Mikko Keskinen Nov 2000

Her Mistress’S Voice: Gynophonocentrism In Feminist Discourses, Mikko Keskinen

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the article:

I will trace the metaphors of voice in the discourses of feminisms as articulated by Judith Fetterley, Kaja Silverman, Julia Kristeva, and Hélène Cixous. I will analyze the presuppositions of their vocal or sound imagery, paying special attention to the implications of the essentialism/constructivism opposition. It is not my intention to provide a comprehensive account of voice in feminisms, nor to make sweeping generalizations on the basis of a very limited corpus. Moreover, in spite of their differences in cultural background, period, and main area of study, the four theorists to be read are, as it were, …

Duty, Honor, Rape: Sexual Assault Against Women During War, Kevin Gerard Neill Nov 2000

Duty, Honor, Rape: Sexual Assault Against Women During War, Kevin Gerard Neill

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the Introduction:

In contrast to dutifully killing the enemy, a soldier is not supposed to rape a woman, at least in theory. But rapes occur in war. They always have, and often in settings and upon a scale that is difficult to comprehend. Accordingly, rape in times of war has a direct effect upon the society where the conflict takes place. More specifically, it affects women, and this violence against them can have the added, profoundly negative effect of eroding their particular social and environmental conditions. As difficult and emotional this issue may be, though, rape in war is …

A Feminist Genealogy Of The Woman’S Christian Temperance Union: Re-Membering Our Selves, Dorothy A. Lander Nov 2000

A Feminist Genealogy Of The Woman’S Christian Temperance Union: Re-Membering Our Selves, Dorothy A. Lander

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the article:

The purpose of my memory work project and this article is to begin to create a “history of the present” (Dean, 1994) through collective remembering in Lipsitz’s (1988) sense of “shared experiences and perceptions about the past that legitimate action in the present” (p. 288). I adapt Nasstrom’s (1999) analysis of memory and narrative and women’s activism to the memory work with my WCTU family, friends and neighbours in the farming community in Ontario where I grew up. We “become historical actors who intervene between the past and the present, continually reframing the movement” (p. 134).
