Estrogen-Induced Relaxation In Bovine Coronary Arteries In Vitro: Evidence For A New Mechanism, Jelica D. J. Kalenic, Rolando J. Ramirez, Stanley Einzig, William A. Neal, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Numerous studies have shown estrogen to be vasoactive in various circulations. Our objective was to determine the effect of estrogen on isolated bovine coronary arteries and the possible mechanism. Bovine coronary arteries, precontracted with thromboxane mimetic U46619 were given doses (0.01-30μM) of 17Β-estradiol in the presence and absence of endothelium and these inhibitors: 10μM indomethacin (cyclooxygenase inhibitor), 10μM methylene blue (inhibits soluble guanylate cyclase), 100μM nitro-L-arginine (inhibits nitric oxide synthesis), 100μM isobutylmethylxanthine (phosphodiesterase inhibitor) and 30μM mifepristone (Ru38486 steroid receptor antagonist). Our results indicated that, estrogen, in the highest concentration used (30μM), elicited an acute dose-dependent relaxation of …

Emerging Issues In The Use Of Binding Arbitration To Resolve Disputes Between Individuals And Health Plans, Karl Polzer Nov 2000

Emerging Issues In The Use Of Binding Arbitration To Resolve Disputes Between Individuals And Health Plans, Karl Polzer

National Health Policy Forum

After briefly describing the federal legal framework fostering the growth of binding arbitration, this paper identifies controversies surrounding arbitration as well as arguments supporting and opposing its use. The paper describes the use of arbitration among certain types of collectively bargained employee health plans regulated under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), by health maintenance organizations (HMOs) in California, and by a large employer operating a self-insured ERISA health plan. Evidence cited by the California Supreme Court that the largest HMO in California operated its mandatory arbitration program in an unfair way is presented, along with the …

Medicare, Managed Care, And Behavioral Health Care, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Barbara Markham Smith Nov 2000

Medicare, Managed Care, And Behavioral Health Care, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Barbara Markham Smith

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

This issue brief examines Medicare and managed care for Medicare beneficiaries with behavioral health needs. Although only a relatively small proportion of Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in managed care arrangements at the present time, proposals to expand the use of Medicare managed care can be expected to receive a good deal of attention in the coming years as part of a larger debate over Medicare's long term future. Thus, this issue brief examines the Medicare+Choice (M+C) program from the perspective of Medicare beneficiaries with mental illness and addiction disorders.

The Role Of The Peer Facilitator In The Experiential Learning Model Of Communication, Gordon Alley-Young

Publications and Research

Abstract: This research examines how peer facilitators in an experiential learning model of communication in introductory speech communication courses offered at the University College of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Canada, are able to meet the specific learning needs of male and female students simultaneously. Also examined is the perceived role of these facilitators within the model. Data in the report are based on focus group interviews with peer facilitators and literature on experiential learning and Cape Breton cultures. The report details facilitators' attempts to establish authority, rapport and an informal educational environment in ways that do not increase power …

Runoff And Soil Loss As Affected By The Application Of Manure, John E. Gilley, L. Mark Risse Nov 2000

Runoff And Soil Loss As Affected By The Application Of Manure, John E. Gilley, L. Mark Risse

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Manure has been used effectively to improve crop production and soil properties because it contains nutrients and organic matter. While it is generally accepted that the improved soil properties associated with manure application lead to changes in runoff and soil erosion, few studies have quantified these impacts. Water quality models used to assess watershed management and estimate total maximum daily load must accurately predict loading rates from fields where manure has been applied. This study was conducted to assemble and summarize information quantifying the effects of manure application on runoff and soil loss resulting from natural precipitation events, and to …

Sugar Preferences Of Nectarivorous Bats, November 2000, Kristina L. Keppel Nov 2000

Sugar Preferences Of Nectarivorous Bats, November 2000, Kristina L. Keppel

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Groups of flowers pollinated by the same subset of species will have general characteristics in common. These characteristics, when considered together, are called flower syndromes. For example, flowers that are bat pollinated open at night and are often drab, pale, and green with a musty odor, and contain hexose-rich nectar. Baker and Baker (1983) findings demonstrate that all bat-pollinated flowers have hexose-rich or hexose-dominated nectar. Four feeders were hung outside of the Hummingbird Gallery in the Monteverde Reserve. Each feeder contained a different type of sugar solution: one of fructose, one of glucose, the third of honey (a mixture of …

Proposed Design Modifications To Reduce Risk Of Operating Rotary Field Mowers, Katie L. White, Larry G. Wells, Scott A. Shearer, Larry R. Piercy Nov 2000

Proposed Design Modifications To Reduce Risk Of Operating Rotary Field Mowers, Katie L. White, Larry G. Wells, Scott A. Shearer, Larry R. Piercy

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The primary objective of this project was to reduce risk of injury associated with operating a rotary mower driven by a tractor power take-off (PTO) by developing and evaluating design improvements and determining their economic feasibility. Researchers have concluded that alteration of machinery design has a greater impact on the reduction of accidents than safety training. Implementation of an Operator Presence Sensing System (OPSS) and removal of the PTO are the two injury-reducing, engineering modifications evaluated by this research. Hydraulic power allows this to occur by providing dynamic braking, few moving parts (removal of the PTO), and controllable power. A …

Combined Effects Of Screening And Band Gap Renormalization On The Energy Of Optical Transitions In Zno And Gan, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai Nov 2000

Combined Effects Of Screening And Band Gap Renormalization On The Energy Of Optical Transitions In Zno And Gan, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai

Physics Faculty Publications

The energy positions of the optical transitions in both GaN and ZnO were investigated when the samples were excited simultaneously with a HeCd laser and an Ar+ ion laser. The increased number of free electrons excited by the Ar+ ion laser will effectively screen both the free exciton and bound exciton transitions, resulting in a blueshift. The increased number of free electrons also produces many-body effects, which lead to a reduction of the band gap energy and thus a redshift. The resultant of screening and renormalization results in a redshift of the optical transitions in ZnO but a …

Curriculum And Assessment : A Question Of Politics?, Christine R. Brew, Gilah C. Leder Nov 2000

Curriculum And Assessment : A Question Of Politics?, Christine R. Brew, Gilah C. Leder

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) has been subject to ongoing modifications since its full introduction in 1992. These changes were largely driven by vocal opponents of this educational reform. In this paper we give voice to teachers charged with implementing the curriculum and assessment directives of the VCE. Specifically, we draw on the experiences of close to 500 senior mathematics teachers – through interview and survey data - to consider the impact on them of the evolution of the VCE.

Meeting Explores Sensor Technology For Remote, Interactive Aquatic Experiments, Kendra L. Daly Nov 2000

Meeting Explores Sensor Technology For Remote, Interactive Aquatic Experiments, Kendra L. Daly

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Oceans, lakes, rivers, and groundwater are complex, dynamic environments in which physical, chemical, and biological processes occur over varying temporal and spatial scales (e.g., eddies, nutrient fluxes, patchiness of organisms, benthic processes, and pollution). In addition, deep, remote, or hostile systems such as hydrothermal vents and polar regions traditionally are poorly sampled, but are important to understanding global biogeochemical and hydrological cycles. In the coming decades, moored, cabled, and autonomous observatories will be used to investigate a spectrum of basic processes in aquatic environments. In anticipation of the need to develop or re‐engineer sensors to measure physical, chemical, biological, and …

Book Review: We The People: The Fourteenth Amendment And The Supreme Court, S. I. Strong Nov 2000

Book Review: We The People: The Fourteenth Amendment And The Supreme Court, S. I. Strong

Faculty Publications

Never one to shirk a challenge, Michael Perry has taken on the difficult task of investigating whether, as charged by a number of prominent social and legal commentators, "the modern Supreme Court, in the name of the Fourteenth Amendment [to the US Constitution], [has] usurped prerogatives and made choices that properly belong to the electorally accountable representatives of the American people," and if so, to what extent (p. 8). Perry makes no attempt to address every facet of Fourteenth Amendment doctrine, but instead focuses his discussion on some of the most controversial topics: racial segregation, affirmative action, discrimination on the …

Does Democracy Engender Equality?, John E. Roemer Nov 2000

Does Democracy Engender Equality?, John E. Roemer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Many suppose that democracy is an ethos which includes, inter alia, a degree of economic equality among citizens. In contrast, we conceive of democracy as ruthless political competition between groups of citizens, organized into parties. We inquire whether such competition, which we assume to be concerned with distributive matters, will engender economic equality in the long run. The society consists of an infinite sequence of generations, each comprised of adults and their children. Adults care about household consumption, and the future wages of their children, which are determined by educational policy. A given generation is characterized by the distribution of …

Alternative Methods For Measuring Productivity Growth, William D. Nordhaus Nov 2000

Alternative Methods For Measuring Productivity Growth, William D. Nordhaus

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The present study is a contribution to the theory of the measurement of productivity growth. First, it examines the welfare-theoretic basis for measuring productivity growth and shows that the ideal welfare-theoretic measure is a chain index of productivity growth rates of different sectors which uses current output weights. Second, it lays out a technique for decomposing productivity growth which separates aggregate productivity growth into three factors — the pure productivity effect, the effect of changing shares, and the effect of different productivity levels. Finally, it shows how to apply the theoretically correct measure of productivity growth and indicates which of …

Development And Validation Of A Pedestrian Lower Limb Non-Linear 3-D Finite Element Model, Peter Schuster, Gopal Jayaraman Nov 2000

Development And Validation Of A Pedestrian Lower Limb Non-Linear 3-D Finite Element Model, Peter Schuster, Gopal Jayaraman

Mechanical Engineering

Lower limb injury is becoming an increasingly important concern in vehicle safety for both occupants and pedestrians. To enable vehicle manufacturers to better understand the biomechanical effects of design changes, it is deemed beneficial to employ a biomechanically fidelic finite element model of the human lower limb.

The model developed in this study includes long bones (tibia, fibula, femur) and flat bone (patella) as deformable bodies. The pelvis and foot bones are modeled as rigid bodies connected to the femur and tibia/fibula via rotational spring-dashpots. The knee is defined by scanned bone surface geometry and is surrounded by the menisci, …
