Catecholamines play an important role in controlling white adipose tissue function and development. β- and α2-adrenergic receptors (ARs) couple positively and negatively, respectively, to adenylyl cyclase and are co-expressed in human adipocytes. Previous studies have demonstrated increased adipocyte α2/β-AR balance in obesity, and it has been proposed that increased α2-ARs in adipose tissue with or without decreased β-ARs may contribute mechanistically to the development of increased fat mass. To critically test this hypothesis, adipocyte α2/β-AR balance was genetically manipulated in mice. Human α2A-ARs were transgenically expressed in the adipose tissue of mice that were either homozygous (−/−) or heterozygous (+/−) …

Marxist Origins Of The "Anti-Third World" Claim, Raj Bhala Jan 2000

Marxist Origins Of The "Anti-Third World" Claim, Raj Bhala

Fordham International Law Journal

This Essay is an experiment — a try-out — of an argument. The argument concerns what I regard to be the most serious of the claims made by the critics, namely, the claims concerning the relationship between the WTO and international trade law, on the one hand, and the Third World, on the other hand. The claim is this: the WTO is anti-development, and international trade law helps tilt the playing field on which the great game of trade is played against developing countries. It is the "most serious" of the claims, I think, because the giant and still growing …

Pax Mercatoria: Globalization As A Second Chance At "Peace For Our Time", Jim Chen Jan 2000

Pax Mercatoria: Globalization As A Second Chance At "Peace For Our Time", Jim Chen

Fordham International Law Journal

This Essay completes a scholarly cycle in which I have defended free trade and international economic cooperation against charges that globalization will harm the environment and drain jobs from the high-wage economies of western Europe, Japan, and the United States. The demolition of geographic and social barriers since the end of the Cold War has delivered not only material wealth but also physical tranquility, political stability, and personal freedom to vast portions of the world's population. The path to peace lies today, as it did in 1938, not in a retreat to obsolete notions of local sovereignty, but in a …

Homage To A Bull Moose: Applying Lessons Of History To Meet The Challenges Of Globalization, Theodore R. Posner, Timothy M. Reif

Fordham International Law Journal

It would appear that some critics' cure for the World Trade Organization (“WTO”) is to build it up, while for others, the cure is to tear it down, or at least to diminish its competence. This seeming contradiction makes it difficult to assess and respond to legitimate criticisms of the WTO. The purpose of this Essay is to address this apparent conundrum. In particular, we attempt to shed light on it by (1) describing the nature of the imbalance that exists in the world trading system today (Part I); (2) offering an historical and legal framework for understanding the seemingly …

Emerging Market Growing Pains: Lessons Of The California Power Crisis, George K. Miller Jan 2000

Emerging Market Growing Pains: Lessons Of The California Power Crisis, George K. Miller

Fordham International Law Journal

In his March 15 column in The Wall Street Journal, David Wessel drew some interesting comparisons between Indonesia's and California's power crises. He observed that the U.S. federal government and bond market will have assisted California on terms much more favorable than those the International Monetary Fund imposed on Indonesia. Obviously California is not facing the same issues regarding currencies and interest rates. Both governments, however, face the political challenge of deregulating retail rates for electricity.

Educational Brain Research As Compared With E.G. White's Counsels To Educators, Linda Bryant Caviness Jan 2000

Educational Brain Research As Compared With E.G. White's Counsels To Educators, Linda Bryant Caviness

Dissertations

Purpose. The purpose of this study was threefold: to review current, education-relevant brain research; to review the educational writings of Ellen G. White for major emerging themes/principles; and to compare these findings for similarities and differences.

Method and Results. Using an inductive process, the synthesis and comparison revealed 15 themes from brain research and 12 principles from White's writings from the middle 1800s and early 1900s.

Comparison of the two lists revealed alignment on eight themes/principles, nonalignment on three themes/principles, and partial-alignment on seven themes/principles.

Aligned themes/principles included: body and mind function as one; exercise and movement are vital …

Private Order And Public Institutions, Ellen D. Katz Jan 2000

Private Order And Public Institutions, Ellen D. Katz

Reviews

In Private Order Under Dysfunctional Public Order, John McMilan and Christopher Woodruff describe the private institutions that order commercial transactions in developing economies where commercial actors view the formal legal regime as unreliable. Presenting evidence from surveys of market participants in several Eastern European countries and in Vietnam, McMillan and Woodruff depict a system of private order that requires formal organization and the creation of institutions to share information and coordinate multiparty responses. These institutions do not simply offer a viable alternative to public procedures, but also enable commercial transactions to occur where the vacuum in public order would otherwise …

Social Comparison And Influence In Groups, Donelson R. Forsyth Jan 2000

Social Comparison And Influence In Groups, Donelson R. Forsyth

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

This chapter is a reminder of social comparison theory's foundations in group processes rather than an extension of social comparison to groups. Social comparison research and theory, by tradition, stress individualistic, psychological purposes of comparison, such as satisfying basic drives, defining and enhancing the self, and alleviating distress or anxiety; but Festinger (1954) used the theory to explain shifts in members' opinions, elevated motivation and competition among members, opinion debates, and the rejection of dissenters in groups (Allen & Wilder, 1977; Goethals & Darley, 1987; Singer, 1981; Turner, 1991; Wheeler, 1991). This chapter revisits the theory's roots in groups before …

Combustion Organic Aerosol As Cloud Condensation Nuclei In Ship Tracks, Lynn M. Russell, Kevin J. Noone, Ronald J. Ferek, Robert Pockalny, Richard C. Flagan, John H. Seinfeld Jan 2000

Combustion Organic Aerosol As Cloud Condensation Nuclei In Ship Tracks, Lynn M. Russell, Kevin J. Noone, Ronald J. Ferek, Robert Pockalny, Richard C. Flagan, John H. Seinfeld

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been sampled in marine stratiform clouds to identify the contribution of anthropogenic combustion emissions in activation of aerosol to cloud droplets. The Monterey Area Ship Track experiment provided an opportunity to acquire data on the role of organic compounds in ambient clouds and in ship tracks identified in satellite images. Identification of PAHs in cloud droplet residual samples indicates that several PAHs are present in cloud condensation nuclei in anthropogenically influenced air and do result in activated droplets in cloud. These results establish the presence of combustion products, such as PAHs, in submicrometer aerosols in …

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The effects of anthropogenic particulate emissions from ships on the radiative, microphysical, and chemical properties of moderately polluted marine stratiform clouds are examined. A case study of two ships in the same air mass is presented where one of the vessels caused a discernible ship track while the other did not. In situ measurements of cloud droplet size distributions, liquid water content, and cloud radiative properties, as well as aerosol size distributions (outside cloud, interstitial, and cloud droplet residual particles) and aerosol chemistry, are presented. These are related to measurements of cloud radiative properties. The differences between the aerosol in …

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

A case study of the effects of ship emissions on the microphysical, radiative, and chemical properties of polluted marine boundary layer clouds is presented. Two ship tracks are discussed in detail. In situ measurements of cloud drop size distributions, liquid water content, and cloud radiative properties, as well as aerosol size distributions (outside-cloud, interstitial, and cloud droplet residual particles) and aerosol chemistry, are presented. These are related to remotely sensed measurements of cloud radiative properties.

The authors examine the processes behind ship track formation in a polluted marine boundary layer as an example of the effects of anthropogenic particulate pollution …

Survey Of Nigerian University Student Affairs Services: A Comparison Of Students' Perceived Service Importance And The Students' Level Of Satisfaction, Michael Adewale Adeniyi Jan 2000

Survey Of Nigerian University Student Affairs Services: A Comparison Of Students' Perceived Service Importance And The Students' Level Of Satisfaction, Michael Adewale Adeniyi

Dissertations

Problem. Nigerian university student-affairs serviceshave been characterized by negative campus activism, violent demonstrations, and the destruction of lives and properties, the result of which led to the closing down of many Nigerian universities. Thus far, little empirical data exist regarding the student personnel servicesavailable to students at Nigerian universities, the importance of student-affairs services, or the level of student satisfaction with these services.

Methods. A quantitative survey methodology was used to assess 35 student-affairs services. A developed and validated survey instrument, the Student ServicesQuestionnaire (SSQ), was administered to collect data from currently registered undergraduate and graduate students of …
