A Computer Database Search Program: Icgcmabs For Annual International Conference On Ground Control In Mining., Xianguang Tang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since 1981, 19 international conferences on ground control in mining and 3 workshops on surface subsidence have been held. The conferences and workshops covered all major topics in coal mine ground control. 867 papers have been published in the conferences and the workshops, which have become one of the main references for the people working in ground control. Since so many papers has been published and more papers will be available with the conference taking place annually in the future, a fast, handy and convenient tool for searching the papers of the conference proceedings is strongly needed. Toward this goal, …

Ecology Of Bald Eagles During The Postfledging Period At Rural And Suburban Nest Sites In Southwest Florida., Dorothy Edna Tinkler Jan 2000

Ecology Of Bald Eagles During The Postfledging Period At Rural And Suburban Nest Sites In Southwest Florida., Dorothy Edna Tinkler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this study, I examined aspects of fledgling and adult behavior at the nest site. Approximately 90% of the observations placed the fledgling bald eagles within the 456m secondary buffer zone. The fledglings centered their activity in the lowest disturbance levels possible. Fledglings were observed most frequently in the nest, on the ground, or perched in a pine tree. For 92% of the intensively observed individuals, 100% of the 50% core use area occurred within the primary buffer zone. Percent overlap of the 95% core use area with the secondary buffer zone was significantly different between suburban and rural fledglings …

The Coaxial Cavity Resonator As A Prototype Rf Ic Engine Ignition Source., Dustin Langdon Mcintyre Jan 2000

The Coaxial Cavity Resonator As A Prototype Rf Ic Engine Ignition Source., Dustin Langdon Mcintyre

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Quarter Wave Coaxial Cavity Resonator (QWCCR) plasma igniter is designed, from requirements drawn from previous theoretical work, as an ignition source for an internal combustion engine. The present research has explored the implementation of the QWCCR into anICengine. The QWCCRdesignparameters of inner conductor length, loop geometry, and loop position were varied for two igniters of differing operating frequency. Variations of the QWCCR RF parameters as a function of engine geometry were studied by placing the igniter in a combustion chamber and manually varying the crank position. Three identical igniters were fitted with dielectric inserts and the parameters were studied …

Development Of System Parameters For Enhanced Cutting And Finishing Of Handglass Using A Carbon Dioxide Laser., Christopher Edward Thompson Jan 2000

Development Of System Parameters For Enhanced Cutting And Finishing Of Handglass Using A Carbon Dioxide Laser., Christopher Edward Thompson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In handglass manufacturing, a need has been identified for a more efficient method to crack off glassware. Extended cutting and finishing times and high rates of breakage in the glassware hinder current methods. For example, due to the physical nature of thermal cracking, crack-off is not easily controlled and after separation is achieved, further finishing of the glassware is required. Depending on the glass properties and worker skill level, losses due to breakage can be as high as 80 percent in some product lines. The Laser Glass Cutting Machine (LGCM) is a joint project among the National Energy Technology Laboratory …

The Metamorphosis Of Jewish Identities In Nineteenth Century Russia, 1801-1894., James Russell Weiss Jan 2000

The Metamorphosis Of Jewish Identities In Nineteenth Century Russia, 1801-1894., James Russell Weiss

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During the period between the ascension of Tsar Alexander I and Tsar Nicholas II, the Jews of Russia and Russian officials were engaged in a curious partnership. Both parties were concerned with determining the precise definition of Jewishness and how this would change during the course of the nineteenth century. Russian officials, in the main, wanted to refashion the Jews of Russia into Russophiles imbued with Russian mores and education but, on no account, were these "new Jews" to be considered true Russians since God had made them a distinct group from their Slavic neighbors. Being compelled to be a …

Advancement In Frp Composites Using Three-Dimensional Stitched Fabrics And Enhancement In Frp Bridge Deck Component Properties., Vimala Shekar Jan 2000

Advancement In Frp Composites Using Three-Dimensional Stitched Fabrics And Enhancement In Frp Bridge Deck Component Properties., Vimala Shekar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Use of FRP composites in construction industry has been growing rapidly. However, currently all composite products are manufactured with one and/or two dimensional fibers and fabrics (1-D or 2-D). A shortcoming thick composite (> 0.75 in.) made of 1-D or 2-D fabrics is its dramatic reduction in strength, i.e., up to 50% of thin (<0.5 in.) composites. This can be attributed to shear lag leading to ply-by-ply failure; in addition, premature failure of matrix and fibers or the interface failure is very common in thick composites. Therefore, the motivation of the present work is to fabricate and test composites with 3-D stitched fabrics, which overcome the limitations in composites made of 1-D or 2-D fabrics.

In this study, composites were fabricated using 3-D stitched fabrics with different: (1) fiber architecture; (2) stitch density; (3) stitch material; and (4) manufacturing process. Strength and stiffness of composites with 3-D stitched fabrics (at coupon level) under tension, bending and shear loads were experimentally …

Debating The Field Civil Code 105 Years Late, Andrew P. Morriss, Scott J. Burnham, James C. Nelson Jan 2000

Debating The Field Civil Code 105 Years Late, Andrew P. Morriss, Scott J. Burnham, James C. Nelson

Faculty Scholarship

In 1895, Montana adopted a version of the Field Civil Code--a massive law originally drafted by New York lawyer David Dudley Field in the early 1860s. The Civil Code (and its companion Political, Penal, and Procedural Codes) were adopted without debate, without legislative scrutiny, and without Montanans having an opportunity to grasp the enormity of the changes the Codes brought to the Montana legal system. In sponsoring this debate over whether to repeal the Civil Code, the Montana Law Review is finally giving Montana the opportunity to examine the merits of the Civil Code that she was denied 105 years …

Book Note: Reviewing "Tortured Confessions", Fatma E. Marouf

Faculty Scholarship

Review Extract:

Tortured Confessions presents an innovative perspective on the relationship between torture and propaganda. While much has been written about the way propaganda spurs and sanctifies torture by demonizing "the enemy," few have explored the way torture itself is used to create propaganda. Abrahamian's work explores how the primary purpose of torture in Iran has been to extract ideological recantations from prisoners.

Study Of Human Head Impact: Brain Tissue Constitutive Models., Toru Aida Jan 2000

Study Of Human Head Impact: Brain Tissue Constitutive Models., Toru Aida

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Finite element (FE) models of the human head have been used extensively to assess engineering response parameters (pressure, shear strain, etc.) that constitute the basis of various injury criteria including the Head Injury Criterion (HIC). There is a wide range of brain material properties reported in the literature, and linear elastic models are frequently used for the brain tissue which is viscoelastic in nature. The uncertainty around the properties of brain tissue affects the perceived importance of those response parameters under consideration. In this research, the effect on head injury criteria of five reported viscoelastic brain models and their linear …

The Effect Of Calcination Conditions On The Graphitizability Of Novel Synthetic And Coal-Derived Cokes., Barbara Ellen Bennett Jan 2000

The Effect Of Calcination Conditions On The Graphitizability Of Novel Synthetic And Coal-Derived Cokes., Barbara Ellen Bennett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The effects of calcination heating rate and ultimate calcination temperature upon calcined coke and subsequent graphitic material microstructures were studied for materials prepared from three different precursors. The pitch precursors used were Mitsubishi AR pitch (a synthetic, 100% mesophase pitch), the NMP-extracted portion of a raw coal, and the NMP-extracted fraction of a coal liquefaction residue obtained from an HTI pilot plant. These materials were all green-coked under identical conditions. Optical microscopy confirmed that the Mitsubishi coke was very anisotropic and the HTI coke was nearly as anisotropic. The coke produced from the direct coal extract was very isotropic. Crystalline …

An Integrated Cost Model For Software Reuse., Senta Fowler Chmiel Jan 2000

An Integrated Cost Model For Software Reuse., Senta Fowler Chmiel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Several cost models have been proposed and assessed in the past for predicting and analyzing the costs associated with software reuse. The integrated cost model, which is presented in this thesis, is based on the premise that there are four decisions in the software reuse lifecycle: the decision to adopt a reuse-based software paradigm; the decision to initiate a domain engineering initiative; the decision to use reusable assets in the development of a given application; and the decision to develop reusable assets. The integrated cost model further considers that all these decisions must be justified by an economic rationale, and …

Evaluation Of Vibration Response Of Ceramic Candle Filters Using An Accelerometer And A Laser Vibrometer., Ye Hone Lin Jan 2000

Evaluation Of Vibration Response Of Ceramic Candle Filters Using An Accelerometer And A Laser Vibrometer., Ye Hone Lin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ceramic candle filters are key components for a successful coal-based power-generation system. The ceramic candle filter is a hollow cylindrical structure made of a porous material. One end is closed with a cap and the other end is open. Ceramic candles are one of the few clean-up technologies that can protect the heat exchanger and consistently meet the gas turbine manufacturer’s inlet particulate requirement to prevent erosion. A total of three ceramic candle filters were tested nondestructively to investigate the boundary conditions of the filters using a laser vibrometer and an accelerometer. The study includes evaluation of vibration data from …

Is There A Link Between Regional Planning And Economic Growth?, Joyce N. Levine Jan 2000

Is There A Link Between Regional Planning And Economic Growth?, Joyce N. Levine

College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) Working Papers, 1991-2000

An aging population directly influences the activities of community planners. Planning issues have a bearing on the quality of life older people experience living in the community. By consciously involving older citizens in the plan-making process, planners can better understand the visions and unique needs of this sector of the population. A questionnaire was developed to measure the degree of effort planners make to involve older citizens in the planning process. It was administered to planners in a sample of 30 jurisdictions in Florida. The results indicate that planners have generally neglected older adults as part the citizen participation process. …

Using Undergraduate Teaching Scholars In A Laboratory Course For Non-Science Majors, T. Jordan Jan 2000

Using Undergraduate Teaching Scholars In A Laboratory Course For Non-Science Majors, T. Jordan

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Although laboratory instruction for non-science majors is a major goal of higher education, its implementation is often difficult in practice. Non-science students are often uncomfortable with a laboratory environment and require close supervision for the laboratory instruction to be effective. To address this problem, support from the New York Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (NYCETP) was used to recruit and train undergraduate Teaching Scholars to assist in the instructional laboratories of NYU’s core science program. The Teaching Scholar was paired with a graduate student laboratory instructor to create a “teaching team.” Responses on student evaluations show that the arrangement …

It's Fun, But Is It Science? Goals And Strategies In A Problem-Based Learning Course, M. S. Bruno, C. D. Jarvis

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

All students at Hampshire College must complete a science requirement in which they demonstrate their understanding of how science is done, examine the work of science in larger contexts, and communicate their ideas effectively. Human Biology: Selected Topics in Medicine is one of 18-20 freshman seminars designed to move students toward completing this requirement. Students work in cooperative groups of 4-6 people to solve actual medical cases about which they receive information progressively. Students assign themselves homework tasks to bring information back for group deliberation. The goal is for case teams to work cooperatively to develop a differential diagnosis and …

The Impact Of A National Science Foundation Collaborative For Excellence In Teacher Preparation On An Undergraduate Chemistry Course For Non-Chemistry Science Majors, J. Tyson Jan 2000

The Impact Of A National Science Foundation Collaborative For Excellence In Teacher Preparation On An Undergraduate Chemistry Course For Non-Chemistry Science Majors, J. Tyson

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

In 1999 and 2000 Chemistry 312: Analytical Chemistry for non-chemistry science majors (taken in the junior or senior year), was revised as a result of the instructor’s involvements in the Center for Excellence in Teacher Preparation project and an NSF equipment grant. Changes included the introduction of a K-12 teaching requirement, more emphasis on co-operative learning and on inquiry-based exercises. These latter two pedagogical practices had more impact on the laboratory activities than on the classroom activities. Students in the laboratory were assigned defined roles in the groups and all groups undertook a three-week research project. Students’ responses to the …

Integration Of Multimedia Interactive Web Tools With In-Class Active Learning, A. Ganz, K. Wongthavarawat, A. Phonphoem

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

In this paper, we present our experience with an introduction to engineering course in which we used a combination of active and collaborative teaching methods, multimedia web-based material, and web-based interactive tools. The students were engaged in active learning in class with methods such as demonstrations, hands-on work, and group work. After class, the students used the web-based material that we developed, such as multiple choice quizzes, interactive applets, and animations. We have also developed a number of web-based course management tools that were used by the course instructors. We conclude that both the students and instructors had a very …

The Thayer Method: Student Active Learning With Positive Results, E. Connors Jan 2000

The Thayer Method: Student Active Learning With Positive Results, E. Connors

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Graduation from West Point requires successful completion of four courses in the mathematical sciences. These core mathematics courses include topics in discrete dynamical systems, differential and integral calculus (single variable and multivariable), differential equations, linear algebra, probability, and statistics. The instructional system employed throughout the core is the "Thayer Method," named for Colonel Sylvanus Thayer, "the Father of the Military Academy." In the Thayer Method, traces of cooperative education and "discovery learning" are evident. It is quintessential active learning. The West Point catalyst is the fundamental principle that cadets are responsible for their own education.

Experiences And Thoughts On Stemtec-Inspired Changes In Teaching Physics For Life Science Majors, M. S. Z. Rabin Jan 2000

Experiences And Thoughts On Stemtec-Inspired Changes In Teaching Physics For Life Science Majors, M. S. Z. Rabin

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

I have taught an introductory course for life science majors three times, each time introducing one or more teaching techniques discussed during the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Teaching Education Collaborative (STEMTEC) meetings. Typical class size was 275 students. I cannot make quantitative statements about comparisons between the results of STEMTEC-type teaching methods and traditional teaching methods because I have never taught this course in a completely traditional lecture style. During the first year, I introduced conceptual questions into my lectures. The lecture would be interrupted several times with questions posed to the class. The students then had several minutes …

Unlabel Their Frankenstein Foods!: Evaluating A U.S. Challenge To The European Commission's Labeling Requirements, John S. Fredland Jan 2000

Unlabel Their Frankenstein Foods!: Evaluating A U.S. Challenge To The European Commission's Labeling Requirements, John S. Fredland

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The recent development of genetically-modified agriculture has been accepted enthusiastically by the U.S. agricultural producers, but the European public has expressed fear that the so-called "Frankenstein Foods" may be harmful to health and the environment. Faced with this public outcry, the European Commission. passed regulations, which mandated that food products containing genetically-modified agricultural products be labeled as such. Although the European Commission appears to have passed its labeling requirements without express or hidden protective intent, the regulations stand to make U.S. producers less competitive in the European market than their European counterparts. This Note contends that the United States should …
