Detecting And Representing Relevant Web Deltas Using Web Join, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Wee Keong, Ee-Peng Lim, Sourav S. Bhowmick

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We show how to detect and represent Web deltas, i.e., changes in Web information, that are relevant to a user's query in the context of our Web warehousing system called WHOWEDA (Warehouse of Web Data). In WHOWEDA, Web information are materialized views stored in Web tables and can be manipulated and analyzed using a set of Web algebraic operators. We present a mechanism to detect relevant Web deltas using Web join and outer Web join. We show how to represent these changes using delta Web tables.

Effects Of Cosolvents And Ph On Protein Adsorption On Polystyrene Latex: A Dynamic Light Scattering Study, Da Song, Daniel Forciniti Jan 2000

Effects Of Cosolvents And Ph On Protein Adsorption On Polystyrene Latex: A Dynamic Light Scattering Study, Da Song, Daniel Forciniti

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dynamic light scattering was used to study the adsorption of two proteins with different surface properties (IgG and HSA) on negatively charged polystyrene latex. The proteins were adsorbed from water and from water/methanol and water/glycerol mixtures at various pH. Some striking differences between the adsorption behaviors of the proteins were observed. Whereas the thickness of the adsorbed layer of HSA was extremely sensitive to pH and solvent composition, that of IgG was not. IgG mainly showed an end-on orientation on polystyrene whereas several different surface orientations are suggested for HSA under different conditions. The addition of methanol inhibited the adsorption …

The Influence Of Poly(Acrylic Acid) Molar Mass On The Properties Of Polyalkenoate Cements Formed From Zinc Oxide/Apatite Mixtures, Sinead Kenny, Robert G. Hill, Mark R. Towler Jan 2000

The Influence Of Poly(Acrylic Acid) Molar Mass On The Properties Of Polyalkenoate Cements Formed From Zinc Oxide/Apatite Mixtures, Sinead Kenny, Robert G. Hill, Mark R. Towler

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The influence of poly (acrylic acid) molar mass was investigated on cements formed from zinc oxide-apatite mixtures at three aging times: one, seven and 28 days. Cements based on both hydroxyapatite and fluorapatite were investigated. The compressive strength, un-notched fracture strength and fracture toughness increased markedly with poly (acrylic acid) molar mass. The fracture toughness and un-notched fracture strength increased with aging time for the two highest molar mass cements but decreased with time for the two lowest molar mass cements. The greater chain entanglement density present in the higher molar mass cements is thought to contribute significantly to the …

Drawbacks Of The Dissolution Method For Measurement Of The Liquid-Solid Mass-Transfer Coefficients In Two-Phase Flow Packed-Bed Reactors Operated At Low And High Pressures, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan, Wes Highfill, Boon Tee Ong

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Dissolution Method Was Used Predominantly at Atmospheric Conditions to Measure the Liquid-Solid Mass-Transfer Coefficient in Two-Phase Flow Packed-Bed Reactors. in an Attempt to Investigate the Effect of Reactor Pressure and Gas Flow Rate on the Liquid-Solid Mass-Transfer Coefficient in a Trickle-Bed Reactor using the Dissolution Method, Difficulties Were Encountered in Implementing This Method at Low- to High-Pressure Operation. Noticeable Losses in the Dissolved Material Were Observed as a Result of Flashing/stripping from the Liquid Phase to the Atmosphere and the Effluent Gas Stream. This Leads to Misinterpretation of the Effect of Reactor Pressure and to Improper Conclusions. in This …

Application Of Electron-Attachment Reactions To Enhance Selectivity Of Electron-Capture Detector For Nitroaromatic Explosives, Mark Gehrke, Shubhender Kapila, V. J. Flanigan Jan 2000

Application Of Electron-Attachment Reactions To Enhance Selectivity Of Electron-Capture Detector For Nitroaromatic Explosives, Mark Gehrke, Shubhender Kapila, V. J. Flanigan

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The differences in the extent of electron-attachment reactions between thermal electrons and selected classes of organic molecules with high electron affinities were investigated. the investigations showed that interactions of thermal electrons with nitroaromatic compounds lead to the formation of neutral products with very low electron affinities. by contrast, a number of other analytes with high electron affinities such as polyhalogenated organic compounds, lead to products with high electron affinities. This difference was exploited to differentiate between nitroaromatic and polychlorinated organic compounds with a tandem arrangement consisting of two electron-capture detectors connected in series with an electron-attachment reactor.

Border Detection On Digitized Skin Tumor Images, Z. Zhang, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A radial search technique is presented for detecting skin tumor borders in clinical dermatology images. First, it includes two rounds of radial search based on the same tumor center. The first-round search is independent, and the second-round search is knowledge-based tracking. Then a rescan with a new center is used to solve the blind-spot problem. The algorithm is tested on model images with excellent performance, and on 300 real clinical images with a satisfactory result

Delaware Corporation Law And Transaction Cost Engineering, Charles R.T. O'Kelley Jan 2000

Delaware Corporation Law And Transaction Cost Engineering, Charles R.T. O'Kelley

Scholarly Works

I have a passionate belief that a very good way to teach Corporations is to structure the course around a core goal--to teach Delaware corporate law systematically--not just bits and pieces of it, but the entire system, much the way we approach the teaching of constitutional law. This Essay is an elaboration of my reasoning and strategies, organized as a presentation and discussion of the core rationales for organizing the course in this way. The first justification flows axiomatically from the following proposition: we create value for many of our students, and harm none, by giving them an opportunity to …

Law And Values In Governance: The Singapore Way, Eugene K. B. Tan Jan 2000

Law And Values In Governance: The Singapore Way, Eugene K. B. Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The article examines the role of law and the legal system in catalysing Singapore's development success. It argues that there is a dichotomy in the approach with regard to commercial law and law relating to individual freedom and rights and civil society. Universalism characterises the treatment of commercial laws while cultural relativism and a communitarian-based understanding of rights and obligations are features of the law relating to the rights of the individual. Instrumentalism, driven by a particularistic 'communitarian' political philosophy underpinned by strong Confucianist values, is very much motivated by the need for good governance as a prerequisite for economic …

The Basic Law: A Fifty Year Assessment, Donald P. Kommers Jan 2000

The Basic Law: A Fifty Year Assessment, Donald P. Kommers

Journal Articles

In 1949 the new German Basic Law raised many questions. Could a newly minted constitution-mere words on paper-breathe new life into a people devastated by war? Would it serve as a stable framework of government? Would it promote respect for human rights and popular government? Would it foster internal political unity? Half a century later all these questions can be answered in the affirmative. The Basic Law is one of the world’s most respected and imitated constitutions and it has emerged as the vital center of Germany's constitutional culture. It is invoked repeatedly in parliamentary debates and resorted to in …

Civil Rights And Human Rights: A Call For Closer Collaboration, Douglass Cassel Jan 2000

Civil Rights And Human Rights: A Call For Closer Collaboration, Douglass Cassel

Journal Articles

Those of you who may be familiar with my commentaries know that my usual topics are mass murderers overseas or U.S. foreign policy toward them. Today, however, I would like to focus on something closer to home-the history of and prospects for fruitful collaboration between the civil rights movement and the international human rights movement. My purpose is to encourage dialogue between civil rights and human rights lawyers. As a sometime civil rights lawyer myself, I am convinced that such a dialogue could be productive.

We might start by distinguishing human rights from civil rights. In customary American usage, the …

Denying Access To Legal Representation: The Attack On The Tulane Environmental Law Clinic, Robert R. Kuehn Jan 2000

Denying Access To Legal Representation: The Attack On The Tulane Environmental Law Clinic, Robert R. Kuehn

Scholarship@WashULaw

When people require assistance to advance public interests, rather than private interests, the lack of legal representation is even more severe—less than .001% of lawyers in the legal profession are public interest lawyers. “Although recent data are unavailable, the best available estimates suggest that the number of full-time public interest lawyers is less than one attorney for every 240,000 Americans.” Citizens advancing issues of public concern often have no choice but to turn for free assistance from law school professors or one of the nation’s law school clinics.

Strategic Disclosure In The Patent System, Douglas Lichtman, Scott Baker, Kate Kraus Jan 2000

Strategic Disclosure In The Patent System, Douglas Lichtman, Scott Baker, Kate Kraus

Scholarship@WashULaw

Patent applications are evaluated in light of the prior art. What this means is that patent examiners evaluate a claimed invention by comparing it with what in a rough sense corresponds to the set of ideas and inventions already known to the public. This is done for three reasons. First, the comparison helps to ensure that patents issue only in cases where an inventor has made a non-trivial contribution to the public's store of knowledge. Second, it protects a possible reliance interest on the part of the public since, once an invention is widely known, members of the public might …

The Columbia River's Fate In The Twentieth Century, William L. Lang Jan 2000

The Columbia River's Fate In The Twentieth Century, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Discusses the history of the Columbia River during the 20th century, emphasizing the image of the river as both a source of industry and an example of wild natural beauty. In 1933 the river was dammed to harness its power for hydroelectricity and control its unpredictable flooding. With the completion of the dams in the 1970's, however, came problems with the edenic vision of the river, especially with the annual salmon run. By the late 20th century, the salmon had all but disappeared, leading to an ongoing conflict between supporters of the dams and conservationists.

An Efficient Cnc Programming Approach Based On Group Technology, Manocher Djassemi Jan 2000

An Efficient Cnc Programming Approach Based On Group Technology, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

Many studies and reports support the significant impact of the application of group technology on various aspects of product design and manufacturing. The fact that group technology is the common solution to similar problems is the main source of such impact. In this paper, one of the less frequently utilized features of CNC technology known as parametric part programming is used to implement the common solution feature of group technology in processing a set of similar parts. Using three part families, the advantages of blending the concept of group technology and parametric programming for CNC machining operations are illustrated. The …

Studies On The Capacitance Of Nickel Oxide Films: Effect Of Heating Temperature And Electrolyte Concentration, Venkat Srinivasan, John W. Weidner Jan 2000

Studies On The Capacitance Of Nickel Oxide Films: Effect Of Heating Temperature And Electrolyte Concentration, Venkat Srinivasan, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

Nickel oxide films were prepared by electrochemically precipitating the hydroxide and heating it in air to form the oxide. The resulting oxide films behave as a capacitor. The capacitance of the oxide depends on the heating temperature, showing a maximum at 300°C. The mechanism of charge storage was studied by measuring the capacitance and surface area as a function of heating temperature, and the capacitance in different electrolytes and potential windows. The charge-storage mechanism is believed to be a surface redox reaction involving adsorbed hydroxyl ions.
