The Role Of Intelligent Transportation Systems (Its) In Intermodal Air Cargo Operations, H.-S. Jacob Tsao, Asim Rizwan

Faculty Publications

If California were a nation, it would be the sixth largest economy in the world. Efficient goods movement is crucial to California’s economy. Air freight consists predominantly of high-value, time-sensitive or time-definite goods, e.g., electronic equipment, emergency shipments, overnight packages, etc. Timely delivery of air freight has been an important element of many manufacturing and service operations in California. Therefore, the air cargo industry is a vital part of the state’s economy. The objectives of this research include (a) investigating and suggesting how the public sector in California can assist the air cargo industry in providing efficient services to businesses …

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This report describes work performed by CDM Technologies Inc. in conjunction with the Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center of California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, for the Office of Naval Research (ONR), on the SEAWAY experimental system for planning, gaming and executing maritime logistic operations from a sea base. SEAWAY incorporates three fundamental concepts that distinguish it from existing (i.e., legacy) command and control applications. First, it is a collaborative system in which computer-based agents assist human operators by monitoring, analyzing and reasoning about events in near real-time. Second, SEAWAY includes an ontological model of the …

Alternate Models Of Centrifugal Cleaners For The Paper Industry, Eric Bauer Dec 2000

Alternate Models Of Centrifugal Cleaners For The Paper Industry, Eric Bauer

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Clean pulp is essential to the optimum operation of any paper machine. The hydrocyclone is the most space, energy and cost efficient method to remove both heavy and light contaminants from a papermaking slurry. The efficiency of a hydrocyclone cleaner increases as the amount of removed contaminants increases. An efficient hydrocyclone allows the least amount of usable fiber to be lost in the cleaning process. Bradley devised a mathematical model to measure the efficiency of a hydrocyclone, and it is still the accepted model today. Several problems may exist with the Bradley Model as it applies to paper making slurries. …

Software Quality Function Deployment, Xiaoqing Frank Liu Dec 2000

Software Quality Function Deployment, Xiaoqing Frank Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Any product development involves projecting its potential success in achieving its functional and commercial goals. Better quality designs that match customer needs and preferences and integrate other lifecycle issues early in the software development process are more likely to be competitive. Thus, there is significant concern in industry about quality product design, which is addressed by quality function deployment (QFD). QFD uses matrices to organize and relate pieces of data to each other. These matrices are often combined to form a basic tool of QFD, called a House of Quality (HoQ). QFD was developed in the Kobe shipyards as a …

Theory And Experiment Of High-Speed Cross-Gain Modulation In Semiconductor Lasers, Xiaomin Jin, T. Keating, Shun-Lien Chuang Dec 2000

Theory And Experiment Of High-Speed Cross-Gain Modulation In Semiconductor Lasers, Xiaomin Jin, T. Keating, Shun-Lien Chuang

Electrical Engineering

We present theory and experiment for the high-speed modulation response of a quantum-well (QW) laser in the presence of an external microwave modulated optical pump in the gain region. The model includes the effects of pump-induced stimulated recombination and cross-gain saturation. Expressions for the small-signal modulation response of the test laser under gain modulation are derived. We also present experimental results using a multiple-QW InGaAlAs Fabry-Perot (FP) laser at 1.552 μm as the test laser and an external pump by a 1.542 μm DFB laser. Comparison between electrical modulation and optical cross-gain modulation (XGM) of the test laser is also …

Lucan’S Epic Aristeia And The Hero Of The Bellum Civile, Vanessa Gorman Dec 2000

Lucan’S Epic Aristeia And The Hero Of The Bellum Civile, Vanessa Gorman

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Scelerique nefando nomen erit virtus ("Virtue will be the name given to unspeakable crime," 1.667-68). This rhetorically- charged sententia does more than illustrate Lucan's penchant for impassioned embellishment. It also reflects a sophisticated critical structure that resolves an apparent contradiction of momentous importance in Lucan's poem. On the one hand, Lucan chooses to write on the subject of the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, a war that is scelus nefandum: it is more painful, more damaging, and more atrocious than any other Roman battle because it requires the shedding of kindred blood and results in tyranny. On the …

Nonmajority Unions, Employee Participation Programs, And Worker Organizing: Irreconcilable Differences?, Carol Brooke Dec 2000

Nonmajority Unions, Employee Participation Programs, And Worker Organizing: Irreconcilable Differences?, Carol Brooke

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The debate over section 8(a)(2) of the National Labor Relations Act and the appropriate role of employer-sponsored employee participation plans ("EPPs") in the workplace coincides with growing attention to the usefulness of nonmajority unions ("NMUs") in providing a voice for workers. This Note examines the effectiveness of an NMU in a manufacturing plant in rural North Carolina, and the interaction of that worker-run organization with EPPs established by management. The experience of these workers suggests that section 8(a)(2) should be amended to require employers with EPPs to offer equal support and assistance to NMUs.

Genetic Algorithms And The Travelling Salesman Problem, Kylie Bryant Dec 2000

Genetic Algorithms And The Travelling Salesman Problem, Kylie Bryant

HMC Senior Theses

Genetic algorithms are an evolutionary technique that use crossover and mutation operators to solve optimization problems using a survival of the fittest idea. They have been used successfully in a variety of different problems, including the traveling salesman problem. In the traveling salesman problem we wish to find a tour of all nodes in a weighted graph so that the total weight is minimized. The traveling salesman problem is NP-hard but has many real world applications so a good solution would be useful. Many different crossover and mutation operators have been devised for the traveling salesman problem and each give …

The Fires Next Time, Andrus Center For Public Policy Dec 2000

The Fires Next Time, Andrus Center For Public Policy

Research and Reports

Because of the severity of the fires in the summer of 2000 and because of the growing debate over what to do about expected future fires, the Andrus Center convened The Fires Next Time conference on December 7, 2000. The conference had several goals in mind. First, it sought to establish a set of sideboards for the discussion of fire by inviting experts to talk about the history, science, and policy of fire management. The purpose was to articulate what we knew, did not know, and should know about fire in the western United States.

Bridging Physics And Communications: Experimental Detection And Analysis Of Web Site Users’ Paths In An Environment Of Free Choice, David M. Frye Dec 2000

Bridging Physics And Communications: Experimental Detection And Analysis Of Web Site Users’ Paths In An Environment Of Free Choice, David M. Frye

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

A role for professional communicators to play in a postmodern context is to work as an experimentalist, designing a system that supports users’ free engagement with the content of the system, inviting people to engage that system, observing the ways in which those engagements proceed, and from those observations, learning how to refine the system to support more fruitful future engagements. The role serves to cultivate an environment in which users’ conversations with one another and their interaction with the system’s content may thrive. This thesis purposes that the experimentalist is a useful and practical role for a communicator in the current …

Utility Of North Atlantic Right Whale Museum Specimens For Assessing Changes In Genetic Diversity, Howard C. Rosenbaum, Mary G. Egan, Phillip Clapham, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Sobia Malik, Moira Brown, Bradley White, Peter Walsh, Rob Desalle Dec 2000

Utility Of North Atlantic Right Whale Museum Specimens For Assessing Changes In Genetic Diversity, Howard C. Rosenbaum, Mary G. Egan, Phillip Clapham, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Sobia Malik, Moira Brown, Bradley White, Peter Walsh, Rob Desalle

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We examined six historical specimens of the endangered North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) using DNA isolated from documented baleen plates from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Sequences from the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region from these samples were compared with those from a near-exhaustive survey (269 of approximately 320 individuals) of the remaining right whales in the western North Atlantic Ocean. Our results suggest that there has been only relatively modest change in maternal lineage diversity over the past century in the North Atlantic right whale population. Any significant reduction in genetic variation in the …
