Wireless Local Area Network For Its Communications Using The 220 Mhz Its Spectral Allocation, J. V. Krogmeier, Ness Shroff Jan 2000

Wireless Local Area Network For Its Communications Using The 220 Mhz Its Spectral Allocation, J. V. Krogmeier, Ness Shroff

JTRP Technical Reports

The objective of this project was to design a radio architecture using the ITS spectral allocations in the 220-222 MHz Land Mobile band which provides a multi-mode operation optimized for point-to-point, mobile, and multiple access communications. A radio performance goal was to achieve greater than 3 bits/second/Hz transmission efficiency for mobile applications, and greater than a 5 bits/second/Hz transmission efficiency for point-to-point applications. An additional important goal of this project was to explore potential ITS applications of the modem technology particularly as applied to an application in sensor telemetry concentration. The fixed point modem will be deployed for remote surveillance …

Life And Evolution In Computers, Melanie Mitchell Jan 2000

Life And Evolution In Computers, Melanie Mitchell

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper argues for the possibility of 'artificial life' and computational evolution, first by discussing (via a highly simplified version) John von Neumann's self-reproducing automaton and then by presenting some recent work focusing on computational evolution, in which 'cellular automata', a form of parallel and decentralized computing system, are evolved via 'genetic algorithms'. It is argued that such in silico experiments can help to make sense of the question of whether we can eventually build computers that are intelligent and alive.

Feedlots -- Rural America's Sewer, Marilyn Lee Nardo Jan 2000

Feedlots -- Rural America's Sewer, Marilyn Lee Nardo

Animal Law Review

Over one billion tons of animal waste is produced each year in the United States by animal feedlot operations (AFOs). In 1995 alone, 63.5 million gallons of manure spilled from AFOs. Manure spills poison rivers, lakes, and ponds, seep into groundwater, causing fishkills, human disease, and death. The United States Environmental Protection Agency, reports that AFOs are a primary factor in the impairment of forty percent of the nation's waterways. Despite these conditions, there are no federal standards for the storage, application, or management of animal waste. This Comment evaluates the existing regulation of AFOs under the Clean Water Act …

Genetic Engineering Of Domestic Animals: Human Prerogative Or Animal Cruelty?, Michelle K. Albrecht Jan 2000

Genetic Engineering Of Domestic Animals: Human Prerogative Or Animal Cruelty?, Michelle K. Albrecht

Animal Law Review

Selective breeding and genetic engineering of domestic animals represent two of science's most manipulative advancements of the last century. One of the many questions raised by these procedures is whether the suffering produced violates state anti-cruelty laws. California's animal anti-cruelty statute is one of the most comprehensive and progressive in the country. This article examines whether selective breeding and genetic engineering violate California's anti-cruelty statute, highlighting recent California case law interpreting these statutes and outlining the standard to determine when a violation has occurred. Furthermore, the article seeks to articulate policy suggestions to further the protection afforded these animals affected …

Informal Aggregation: Procedural And Ethical Implications Of Coordination Among Counsel In Related Lawsuits, Howard M. Erichson Jan 2000

Informal Aggregation: Procedural And Ethical Implications Of Coordination Among Counsel In Related Lawsuits, Howard M. Erichson

Faculty Scholarship

Even when related claims are not aggregated by any formal procedural mechanism, the lawyers involved in the separate lawsuits often coordinate their efforts. Such "informal aggregation" raises important questions about the boundaries of a dispute and the boundaries of the lawyer-client relationship. As an ethical matter, the central question is whether a lawyer owes ethical duties to a coordinating lawyer's client. Looking at confidentiality, loyalty, conflicts of interest, and malpractice, Professor Erichson suggests that ethical safeguards for clients of coordinating lawyers are neither strong enough nor explicit enough to provide adequate protection, and the problem inheres in the nature of …

Legal Practice Rights Of Domestic And Foreign Lawyers In The United States , Roger J. Goebel Jan 2000

Legal Practice Rights Of Domestic And Foreign Lawyers In The United States , Roger J. Goebel

Faculty Scholarship

In the post-World War II international economy, with its enormous growth in transnational trade and investment, multinational legal practice has become a functional reality. Within the last two decades, the volume of trans-border legal practice has grown enormously in fields such as trade law, international banking and finance, international arbitration and litigation, international contractual and joint venture arrangements, transborder acquisitions and mergers, international antitrust, inter- national tax planning, and foreign investment counselling. Domestic law firms within the leading commercial nations have not only grown substantially in size, often by merger, they have also increasingly created networks of foreign branch offices, …

Gender, Self-Efficacy, Anxiety, Experience, And The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition, Short Form (Wais-Iii), Laura Jean Blalock Jan 2000

Gender, Self-Efficacy, Anxiety, Experience, And The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition, Short Form (Wais-Iii), Laura Jean Blalock

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships between gender, self-efficacy, anxiety, experience and the WAIS-III, short form. This study investigated the hypotheses that gender differences occur on select subtests of the WAISIII, short form, that math self-efficacy, math attitudes, and math experience affect Arithmetic scores, and that motor speed affects performance on the Digit Symbol subtest. The sample consisted of 93 undergraduate students from the University of Northern Iowa (36 males, 57 females). Students completed questionnaires and were administered the WAIS-III short form individually. Males scored higher on the Arithmetic, Information, and Digit Span subtests and …

A Comparative Analysis Of Surface Erosion And Water Runoff From Existing And Recontoured Forest Roads: O'Brien Creek Watershed, Lolo National Forest, Montana, Jennifer Hickenbottom

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In recent years more efforts have been made to return unneeded roads to natural states through obliteration or total recontouring methods. Yet, few data exist to support the road obliteration process. The purpose of this study was to assess some of the relative physical impacts of road obliteration for the O'Brien Creek (Montana) watershed. Three road treatments were chosen: recontoured road at 0 months, recontoured road at 12 months, and existing roads broken down into four segments ( cutslope, fillslope, road center and road tread). Two types of geologic formations were sampled (Bonner and Mount Shields) along with two slope …
