A lock unimolecular micelle includes at least one engineered acceptor specifically binding a ligand (or specifically a "key" unimolecular micelle) thereto. A key unimolecular micelle comprises a core molecule and a plurality of branches extending therefrom, at least one of the branches including a shank portion extending therefrom having a terminal moiety at an end thereof for binding to a complimentary acceptor of a lock unimolecular micelle. Together, the lock and key micelles form a unit, either irreversibly or reversibly bound wherein the lock micelles is a soluble receptor engineered to specifically bind to the specifically engineered key micelle.

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Comparison Between Two Analytical Methods For Fecal Coliform Analysis In Natural Water: Membrane Filtration And Multiple Tube Fermentation, Mona M. Hafez

This study compares two different analytical methods for the determination of coliform bacteria within natural waters. The two methods are: 1) membrane Filtration, and 2) multiple tube fermentation. Water samples from ten different locations within the Appomattox River watershed were collected by technicians from the Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District and the Piedmont Region TMDL Initiative in Farmville, Virginia.

The Membrane filtration (MF) method utilizes m-FC broth to isolate and differentiate total fecal coliform bacteria (E.coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas) in natural water samples. A 1% dilution of each water sample is filtered through a 0.45 micron (um) Millipore filter …

Facilitating Scientific Research: Intellectual Property Rights And The Norms Of Science - A Response To Rai And Eisenberg, Scott F. Kieff

Law and Economics Papers

Arti Rai's article in the Fall 1999 issue of the Northwestern University Law Review explores the proper use of both legal rules and prescriptive norms to shape behavior in the basic biological research community. Rai's article builds upon the extensive work in this area by Rebecca Eisenberg, which first attained prominence through Eisenberg's article in the December 1987 issue of the Yale Law Journal. Eisenberg concludes that the use of patents in the area of basic biological research may frustrate central norms of the community. Clinical, Pathological And Antigenic Aspects Of Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (Bvdv) Type 2 Isolates Identified In Brazil, E. F. Flores, L. H. G. V. Gil, S. A. Botton, R. Weiblen, J. F. Ridpath, L. C. Kreutz, C. Pilati, D. Driemeyer, V. Moojen, A. C. Wendelstein

Nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of Brazilian bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) field isolates identified four viruses belonging to the genotype 2. Comparison of 5’ UTR sequences from these isolates to those of North American BVDV type 2 revealed genomic variations that correlated with the geographic origins of the isolates. Two of the Brazilian type 2 viruses were isolated from clinical cases of gastroenteric/respiratory disease and two were isolated from healthy bovine fetuses. The clinical cases affected young animals (8- and 18-months-old) and were characterized by diarrhea, respiratory signs, extensive oral and digestive tract erosions, conjunctival and vulvar congestion, occasional …
