Continuous cultures of bovine trophectoderm (CT-1 and CT- 5) and bovine endoderm (CE-1 and CE-2) were initiated and maintained on STO feeder cells. CT-1 and CT-5 were derived from the culture of intact, 10- to 11-day in vitro-produced blastocysts. CE-1 and CE-2 were derived from the culture of immunodissected inner cell masses of 7- to 8-day in vitro-produced blastocysts. The cultures were routinely passaged by physical dissociation. Although morphologically distinct, the trophectoderm and endoderm both grew as cell sheets of polarized epithelium (dome formations) composed of approximately cuboidal cells. Nucleotide sequences of RNAs 1 and 2 of a Japanese strain of soil-borne wheat mosaic virus (SBWMV), the type species of the genus Furovirus, and sorghum chlorotic spot virus (SCSV) were determined from cloned cDNA. The relationship among the Japanese and US strains of SBWMV, SCSV, oat golden stripe virus (OGSV), and recently proposed Chinese wheat mosaic and European wheat mosaic viruses (CWMV and EWMV) were examined at the nucleotide and amino acid levels. A computer model for simulating population dynamics of Lyctocoris campestris (F.), a predator of stored-product insects, was developed using data from the literature and newly collected data for adult longevity and fecundity. Immature development time and survival, adult longevity, fecundity, and cannibalism were simulated. The model was validated at ambient environmental conditions during three seasons in Wisconsin. The model accurately simulated development of the predator feeding on larvae of the Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), in the validation studies. The model will be useful in optimizing mass-rearing and augmentative releases of this predator for biological control of stored-product …

This article is divided into three sections. Section one considers the positive results from the civil unions law. It recognizes that this legislation represents an important step along the path toward full recognition of same-sex couples by extending significant rights, benefits, and responsibilities beyond opposite-sex marriage." With these benefits, however, come several problems. Section two places the civil unions law along side other examples of "separate but equal" restrictions in the race and sex contexts and considers it within the sexual orientation context. Larval ontogeny of Stolephorus baganem:;is and Thryssa kammalensis, comprises three successive phases characterized by: (I) development of swimming appendages, (2) changes in allometric growth of various body parts, and (3) increase in body depth, as well as eye diameter, in the case of S. baganensis. Both anchovy species are multiple spawners, spawning all year round but varying in intensity. Mass spawnings of S bagane11sis start in the first (summer) inter-monsoon period and last for four months. From the first experiment, it was found 1ha1 the primary root elongation of Z. elegans was optimum on the fifth day with a value of 40.82 ± 15.39 mm Thus, the root segment with an elongation in the range of25.43 to 56.21 mm has been adopted as the standard length for the m VI VO and m vt/fo cytological studies. A study of abundance and biomass of the macrofauna in the mangroves in Sementa (Selangor) and Kuala Sepetang (Perak) was carried out monthly from September 1993 to December 1994 and from January 1994 to December 1994 . Two sites, a forested and a cleared area (deforested) were selected in each location for the study. Sampling for macrofauna was done by randomly selecting a spot and then pressing an aluminium quadrate of 40 cm x 40 cm into the sediment up to a depth of 20 cm. An inexpensive carrier matrix. vermiculite was used for immobilizing urease. A cost effective and simple method of coupling was developed using vermiculite. Immobilization of urease on Amberlite MB-land Nylon-6 tube were also studied. Activities of free and immobilized urease were studied and compared: Among all methods used for immobilization of urease. the method of coupling the enzyme to vermiculite gave the highest retained activity of 82% (Method I) and 89% (Method 2) at pH 6.0 and 5.5 respectively. The coral reef ecosystem at Cape Rachado, is the only remaining fringing coral reef along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The reef represents an interesting ecosystem with diverse flora and fauna and possesses a critical geographical location at the Straits of Malacca. Fish and macroinvertebrate distribution and abundance in the Klang Strait (Malaysia) were investigated in relation to waler and bottom sediment characteristics. Thirteen water and bottom sediment parameters were measured and analysed using principal component analysis (PCA). PCA of these parameters distinguished three major habitat groupings in the Klang Strait: ( I) nearshore estuaries and mudflats, characterized by very turbid, lower salinity waters and muddy substrates, (2) offshore sandy habitat centred around the northern half of Angsa Bank, and characterized by less turbid, oxygen-riched and higher salinity water, and (3) offshore very fine sand habitat located largely on the southern half …

Bactrocera ( = Dacus ) papayae bred from chillies collected from Klang (MARDI Station) and kept in laboratory cages, laid 5.6 eggs per female per day with a maximum of 34 eggs. The net egg hatchability was 46.2 % . Egg hatchability declined with age of females. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) was 0.1150 while the finite rate of increase (A) was 1.13 .The net reproductive (􀀋)was 170 female eggs per female, and generation time was 45 . Hemocyanin serves as an oxygen carrier in the hemolymph of the European lobster Homarus Vulgaris. The oxygen binding behavior of the pigment is modulated by metabolic effectors such as lactate and urate. Urate and caffeine binding to 12-meric hemocyanin (H. Vulgaris) was studied using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Binding isotherms were determined for fully oxygenated hemocyanin between pH 7.55 and 8.15. No pH dependence of the binding parameters could be found for either effector. Since the magnitude of the Bohr effect depends on the urate concentration, the absence of any pH dependence of urate and caffeine binding to oxygenated hemocyanin …

This article summarises the recent development of Swiss mental health policies and services. The last three decades have been characterised by a strong emphasis on the socio psychiatric approach Bachmann, 1995; Ciompi, 1997, 1994,1987a, 1987b). The establishment of a decentralised, patient and community focused mental health care network, integrating different therapeutic methods under a uniform administration is the base concept of the emerging movement (Ernst, 1998;Bachmann, 1995,Ciompi, 1994, 1987b). Achievements and problems of mental health care provision are outlined. Arbitration has great potential utility for promoting family autonomy. Parents in a fracturing family might utilize arbitration to select both the decisionmaker and the legal standards to guide that decisionmaker in resolving their child custody and visitation dispute. In this way, the parents can seek to ensure that the resolution of their child custody and visitation dispute is governed by the values that the family has cherished and lived by.

The article analyzes the Supreme Court’s decision in M.L.B. v. S.L.J., 519 U.S. 102 (1996), which held that where a state provides an appeal from a judgment terminating parental rights, it must, under the due process and equal protection clauses provide indigent appellants with a transcript if a transcript is necessary to review the decision. In doing so, it questions the framework used to analyze parental rights termination decisions. Chitosan, a derivative of the natural polysaccharide chitin, is known for its biocompatibility and metal-binding capacity. The aim of this study was to combine these two properties of chitosan and investigate its potential as a new iron (III) ion (ferric ion) adsorbing agent. The development of a safe and orally active iron chelating agent is especially important for the treatment of thalassemics. In this study, the physicochemical parameters affecting the ability of chitosan flakes to adsorb iron (III) ions were studied by complexometric titration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of nursing diagnoses by nurse practitioners (NPs). Additionally, this study assessed NPs’ perceptions of the advantages and challenges to using nursing diagnoses. Data were collected by questionnaires mailed to a randomly selected national sample of 398 NPs.

Of the 249 participants, 48 NPs indicated that they use nursing diagnoses. No significant differences were found between nursing diagnosis use and selected demographic characteristics or educational preparation. The needs of family members of patients with severe brain injury were investigated using a descriptive-correlational design. A convenience sample of family members (N = 23) were surveyed with the Critical Care Family Needs Inventory (CCFNI). Need statements from the CCFNI were rank ordered, and a total score for the CCFNI was calculated. The majority of the top ranked needs consisted of assurance and information needs, which is consistent with other research using the CCFNI. Descriptive statistics were used to compare the results from this study with Lorenz’s study (1995).

This study explored Reed’s theory of self-transcendence as a potential developmental resource and correlate of well-being within the long term care population. Self-transcendence is a healthy maturation process of expanding one’s conceptual boundaries inwardly through increased self-understanding; outwardly through investing in relationships with others and the environment; and/or temporally by integrating perceptions of one’s past and future in a way that enhances the present. A descriptive correlational research design examined the level of self-transcendence and the relationship of self-transcendence to depression among nursing home residents. The sample of 51 oldest-old adults ranged from 80 to 103 years old.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to evaluate whether a normal ultrasound following a positive triple marker serum screen reduces the risk of having a trisomy 18 fetus to a level that is less than the procedure-related risk for amniocentesis. STUDY DESIGN: A nonrandomized, non-concurrent cohort chart review was performed of all women who screened positive (risk > 1:250) for trisomy 18 by triple marker serum testing through Spectrum Health Downtown Genetic Screening Program from June 1996 through September 1999. Of the 13,618 serum samples screened, 158 were identified as being at an increased risk for trisomy 18. Pediatric outcome was obtained through …
