Grimalt, Jürgen Rullkötter, Marie-Alexandrine Sicre, Roger Summons, John Farrington, H. Rodger Harvey, Miguel Goñi, Ken Sawada

OES Faculty Publications

The literature pertaining to C37 alkenone and C37 and C38 alkenoate production and diagenesis has been reviewed and evaluated for issues that might jeopardize their usefulness in paleotemperature estimation. We also examined the use of the C37 alkenones as paleoproductivity indicators, the stability of their δ13C isotopic compositions, and their incorporation into the nonsolvent extractable organic matter fraction. Biological transformation of organic matter by bacteria and zooplankton does not appear to cause significant changes to the ratio of C37:2 and C37:3 alkenones, but there are major alterations in the relative composition of alkenoates. Studies of water column processes and postdepositional …

Meeting Explores Sensor Technology For Remote, Interactive Aquatic Experiments, Kendra L. Daly Nov 2000

Meeting Explores Sensor Technology For Remote, Interactive Aquatic Experiments, Kendra L. Daly

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Oceans, lakes, rivers, and groundwater are complex, dynamic environments in which physical, chemical, and biological processes occur over varying temporal and spatial scales (e.g., eddies, nutrient fluxes, patchiness of organisms, benthic processes, and pollution). In addition, deep, remote, or hostile systems such as hydrothermal vents and polar regions traditionally are poorly sampled, but are important to understanding global biogeochemical and hydrological cycles. In the coming decades, moored, cabled, and autonomous observatories will be used to investigate a spectrum of basic processes in aquatic environments. In anticipation of the need to develop or re‐engineer sensors to measure physical, chemical, biological, and …

Comparison Of Coastal Fringe And Interior Forests As Reserves For Marbled Murrelets On Vancouver Island, Alan E. Burger, Volker Bahn, Angeline R.M. Tillmanns Nov 2000

Comparison Of Coastal Fringe And Interior Forests As Reserves For Marbled Murrelets On Vancouver Island, Alan E. Burger, Volker Bahn, Angeline R.M. Tillmanns

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Much of the protected habitat available to the threatened Marbled Murrelet Brachyramphus marmoratus and other old-growth associated species in the Pacific Northwest is in narrow strips along the coast (e.g., parks and scenic fringes). Using data over two years from three watersheds on southwest Vancouver Island, we show that such shoreline strip forests represent suboptimal habitat for murrelets. Murrelet detections, including circling and subcanopy behaviors, were significantly lower at 30 coastal stations (20–250 m from the shoreline edge) than at 30 interior stations (1.5–21.0 km inland). Densities of predators were significantly higher at the coastal stations. The coastal trees were …

Rhizosphere Competitiveness Of Trichloroethylene-Degrading, Poplar-Colonizing Recombinant Bacteria, Hojae Shim, Sadhana Chauhan, Doohyun Ryoo, Kally Bowers, Stuart M. Thomas, Keith A. Canada, Thomas K. Wood, Joel Gerard Burken Nov 2000

Rhizosphere Competitiveness Of Trichloroethylene-Degrading, Poplar-Colonizing Recombinant Bacteria, Hojae Shim, Sadhana Chauhan, Doohyun Ryoo, Kally Bowers, Stuart M. Thomas, Keith A. Canada, Thomas K. Wood, Joel Gerard Burken

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Indigenous bacteria from poplar tree (Populus canadensis var. eugenei `Imperial Carolina') and southern California shrub rhizospheres, as well as two tree-colonizing Rhizobium strains (ATCC 10320 and ATCC 35645), were engineered to express constitutively and stably toluene o-monooxygenase (TOM) from Burkholderia cepacia G4 by integrating the tom locus into the chromosome. The poplar and Rhizobium recombinant bacteria degraded trichloroethylene at a rate of 0.8 to 2.1 nmol/min/mg of protein and were competitive against the unengineered hosts in wheat and barley rhizospheres for 1 month (colonization occurred at a level of 1.0 × 105 to 23 × 105 …

Dna Binding Properties Of The Arabidopsis Floral Development Protein Aintegumenta, Staci Nole-Wilson, Beth A. Krizek Nov 2000

Dna Binding Properties Of The Arabidopsis Floral Development Protein Aintegumenta, Staci Nole-Wilson, Beth A. Krizek

Faculty Publications

The Arabidopsis protein AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) is a member of a plant-specific family of transcription factors (AP2/EREBP) that share either one or two copies of an approximately 70 amino acid region called the AP2 repeat. DNA binding activity has been demonstrated previously for members of this family containing a single AP2 repeat. Using an in vitro selection procedure, the DNA binding specificity of the two AP2 repeat containing protein ANT was found to be 5'-gCAC(A/G)N(A/T)TcCC(a/g)ANG(c/t)-3'. This consensus site is much longer than sites recognized by proteins containing a single AP2 repeat and neither AP2 repeat of ANT was alone capable of …

Effect Of Harvest And Effective Population Size On Genetic Diversity In A Striped Bass Population, Marilyn Diaz, David S. Wethey, James Bulak, Bert Ely Nov 2000

Effect Of Harvest And Effective Population Size On Genetic Diversity In A Striped Bass Population, Marilyn Diaz, David S. Wethey, James Bulak, Bert Ely

Faculty Publications

A major factor that contributes to loss of genetic variation in natural populations is a small effective population size. In species with a complex life history that involves overlapping generations and delayed maturity, the impact of infrequent annual reproductive bottlenecks is likely to be small because effective population size is defined by the number of individuals contributing to a generation and not to a single year-class. The striped bass Morone saxatilis is a longlived species with overlapping generations and age structure, whose recreational and commercial importance has made it a target of intense harvest. We analyzed allele frequency fluctuation among juvenile …
