The H2O2/UV Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) Was Investigated to Determine Byproduct Formation under Different Experimental Conditions (PH, Alkalinity, and H2O2/UV Dose). a Key Factor in the Efficiency of the AOP Was the Dissolved Oxygen Concentration. Gas Chromatography/mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) Analysis Was Used to Identify Byproducts Resulting from Oxidation under Oxygen-Rich and Oxygen-Limited Conditions. Resultant Oxidation Byproducts Were Analyzed for their Susceptibility to Biological Degradation. Biodegradation Rate Constants Were Determined and Modeled for the Primary Byproducts of the Advanced Oxidation Process. Population-based candidate gene association analyses are becoming increasingly popular as a result of a greater number of genes and gene polymorphisms having been identified for which some functional information is available. Because many biochemical and physiologic systems impact blood pressure regulation and hypertension susceptibility, many of these identified genes and polymorphisms are candidates for population-level association studies involving blood pressure levels or hypertension status. Recent studies have suggested that the α-adducin gene may harbor polymorphisms that influence blood pressure level. Blast-resistant, partially resistant, and susceptible cultivars of rice were planted in soil amended with Si at 0, 500, or 1,000 kg/ha at two locations in eastern Colombia to assess differential responses to leaf blast, neck blast, and leaf scald, and to examine the quantity and quality of grains harvested. Leaf and neck blast on partially resistant and susceptible cultivars were reduced by Si as the rate of Si was increased. Depending on the location, the level of severity of leaf and neck blast on partially resistant cultivars, when fertilized with Si at 500 or 1,000 kg/ha, was lowered to that …

While a number of Christian librarians have explored the implications of the Christian world view for particular issues in library practice, few have attempted to develop a thoroughgoing philosophy of Christian librarians/zip. Those who have done so have generally failed to center their proposals around the Christian view of truth. The knowability, objectivity, unity, practicality, and spirituality of truth should impact the way librarians at Christian colleges carry out major library functions, including collection development, reference services, bibliographic instruction, research and publication, and management.

The modern, tidally influenced Mahakam Delta progrades onto the eastern Borneo continental shelf. The processes controlling the occurrence and preservation of sedimentary organic matter in a tropical deltaic setting are unknown. Understanding these processes has direct application in explaining the unusual origin of oil and gas generated from terrestrial plant debris (rather than typically from algal remains) in many tropical Miocene basins. Water salinity and dissolved oxygen, and sediment pH, Eh, and TOC were measured. Organic matter was extracted by acid digestion from 200 surface sediment samples collected from the Mahakam River, the delta, and the continental shelf. Seventeen types …

Parabolic systems are governed by time dependent partial differential equations. To obtain a high simulation quality that captures important features of a parabolic system requires solving the governing equation to an adequate accuracy, which necessitates a large sampling size in the spatial and temporal dimensions, and hence a large amount of simulation data and high computing cost. Domain decomposition is an effective method of divide-and-conquer paradigm that divides the problem domain into several subdomains, reducing the original problem into several smaller interdependent problems which can be solved in parallel. We describe the spatial organization and social behavior of Hermit Thrushes (Catharus guttatus) wintering in pine plantations and an adjacent hardwood forest in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana over three winters. We used point counts (n = 403) to collect data on agonistic behaviors and relative abundance within the study area. We used mist-netting to study site fidelity on four 9-ha plots within and among years. We used radio-telemetry to measure Hermit Thrushes' movements and territoriality (n = 50). We found that Hermit Thrushes saturated suitable patches within the study area. Most Hermit Thrushes actively defended small [mean = 0.55 ± 0.03 …

Potential surface water and groundwater contaminants include herbicides that are applied postemergence. Although applied to the plant canopy, a portion of any application reaches the soil either directly or via subsequent foliar washoff. This study examined sorption, degradation, and mobility of the postemergence herbicide acifluorfen (5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid) in Dundee silty clay loam (fine-silty, mixed, thermic, Aeric Ochraqualf) taken from conventional till (CT) and no-till (NT) field plots. Vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) affects a spectrum of women with granulomatous vulvar diseases, human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, and chronic inflammatory vulvar dermatoses. To determine whether there is evidence of chromosomal instability occurring in synchronous skin surrounding vulvar SCCs, we investigated abnormalities in chromosome 17 copy number. Samples of SCC, vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), and surrounding vulvar skin were obtained from all vulvar excisions performed for squamous neoplasia at Albany Medical College from 1996 to 1997.
