Review Of Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Second Edition, Gerald W. Esch Jan 2000

Review Of Parasites Of North American Freshwater Fishes, Second Edition, Gerald W. Esch

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Thirty-two years ago, Glenn Hoffman published the first version of this book. I remember it well because I was teaching a field parasitology course at the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station of Michigan State University, and depended to a very great extent on various fish parasites to use for examples in class study. As a result, the book was canonical as a source of information, and it continued to serve me well as I moved elsewhere in subsequent years. I know from personal knowledge that others who worked with fish parasites were equally served by the book. My copy of the …

Selenium In A Wyoming Grassland Community Receiving Wastewater From An In Situ Uranium Mine, Pedro Ramirez Jr., Brad Rodgers Jan 2000

Selenium In A Wyoming Grassland Community Receiving Wastewater From An In Situ Uranium Mine, Pedro Ramirez Jr., Brad Rodgers

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Water, soil, vegetation, grasshoppers (Family Acrididae), bird eggs and bird livers collected at a 23.5 hectare (58 acres) grassland irrigated with wastewater from an in situ uranium mine (Study Area) and a reference site in 1998 were analyzed for selenium and other trace elements. Bird surveys were conducted at the irrigated grassland at the in situ uranium mine to determine species use, relative abundance and behavior. We observed 23 species of birds using the Study Area. Western meadowlarks (Sturnella neglecta), red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), lark buntings (Calamospiza melanocorys) and horned larks (Eremophila alpestris …

Experimental And Theoretical Study Of The Photoelectron Spectra Of Mnox-(X=1-3) Clusters, Gennady L. Gutsev, B. K. Rao, P. Jena, Xi Li, Lai-Sheng Wang Jan 2000

Experimental And Theoretical Study Of The Photoelectron Spectra Of Mnox-(X=1-3) Clusters, Gennady L. Gutsev, B. K. Rao, P. Jena, Xi Li, Lai-Sheng Wang

Physics Publications

We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of MnO−x and MnOx(x=1–3) clusters. Theoretically, geometrical configurations of various isomers of the clusters were optimized and vertical detachment energies for the anions were evaluated. The ground state of MnO− was predicted to be 5Σ+, followed by an excited state (7Σ+) 0.14 eV higher in energy. The ground state of MnO−2 is 5B2, with a 3B1 isomer 0.15 eV higher. MnO−3 is predicted to be a singlet D3h cluster. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra of MnO−x were measured at several photon energies and under various experimental conditions, and were interpreted based on the …

Agroforestry In The United States: Research And Technology Transfer Needs For The Next Millennium Jan 2000

Agroforestry In The United States: Research And Technology Transfer Needs For The Next Millennium

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

If society's needs and aspirations for forestderived goods, services, and amenities truely are to be met, we must find ways of augmenting traditional forestry by gleaning some portion of these benefits from agricultural lands. For example: windbreaks, riparian forest buffers, hybrid poplar trees, farm woodlots, and grazing/timber systems.

Phylogenetic Relationships In Phoradendreae (Viscaceae) Inferred From Three Regions Of The Nuclear Ribosomal Cistron. Ii. The North American Species Of Phoradendron, Vanessa E. T. M. Ashworth Jan 2000

Phylogenetic Relationships In Phoradendreae (Viscaceae) Inferred From Three Regions Of The Nuclear Ribosomal Cistron. Ii. The North American Species Of Phoradendron, Vanessa E. T. M. Ashworth

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

A parsimony analysis based on sequences from the ITS region and two partitions of the 26S subunit of nuclear ribosomal DNA was used to infer phylogenetic relationships among the North American species of Phoradendron. A strongly supported clade united all but one of the species typically lacking cataphylls, a character used previously to distinguish the northern species from those of Central and South America. The divergent placement of P. californicum relative to the members of this "northern" clade confirmed the hypothesis that species lacking cataphylls are polyphyletic. Four of five species parasitic on conifers formed a well-supported clade. However, a …

A Phylogenetic Classification Of Polemoniaceae, J. Mark Porter, Leigh A. Johnson Jan 2000

A Phylogenetic Classification Of Polemoniaceae, J. Mark Porter, Leigh A. Johnson

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Three hundred seventy nine species of Polemoniaceae are arranged in a phylogenetic classification composed of three subfamilies, eight tribes, and 26 genera. Nomenclature of one tribe is clarified and the circumscription of several tribes differs greatly from previous classifications. Five new genera, Bryantiella, Dayia, Lathrocasis, Microgilia, and Saltugilia, are proposed. In addition, four new species are described from the genera Allophyllum, Dayia, Giliastrum, and lpomopsis. This treatment represents a major reclassification with 59 new combinations, and the application of several additional combinations not used in recent years.

Yuccas (Agavaceae) Of The International Four Corners: Southwestern Usa And Northwestern Mexico, Lee W. Lenz, Michael A. Hanson Jan 2000

Yuccas (Agavaceae) Of The International Four Corners: Southwestern Usa And Northwestern Mexico, Lee W. Lenz, Michael A. Hanson

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Yuccas (Yucca, Agavaceae) are an easily recognizable constituent of the vegetation of the International Four Corners; an area made up of portions of Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora and Chihuahua. We recognize three species as native to the region, Yucca baccata, Y. elata and Y. madrensis, together with interspecific hybrids, and document for the first time naturally occurring intersectional hybridization between baccate-fruited (sect. Yucca) and capsular-fruited (sect. Chaenocarpa) species. We examine the reproductive barriers to hybridization operating within the genus, i.e., spatial, temporal and ethological, and we consider circumstances that may have been responsible for the production and …

Back To The Garden: The Redemptive Promise Of Sustainable Forestry, 1893-2000, Char Miller Jan 2000

Back To The Garden: The Redemptive Promise Of Sustainable Forestry, 1893-2000, Char Miller

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

As we struggle at the turn of the century to define and implement “sustainable forestry”— the next stage in the evolution of forest management in North America and the world—it is important to realize that its components have strong roots in the forestry profession. This article examines the relationship of forests and forestry with social equity issues during the last century. In the end, the author leaves us with a question: can sustainable forestry as we understand it today lead to conflict resolution? If not, what lies beyond sustainable forestry?

New Specimens Of Late Quaternary Extinct Mammals From Caves In Sanchez Ramirez Province, Dominican Republic, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Abel Vale, Keith Christenson, Joyce Lundberg, Gabriel Atilles, Stein Erik Lauritzen

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

During the late Quaternary, the island of Hispaniola supported one of the most diverse mammalian faunas in the West Indies. Much of this diversity was lost to extinction in the past 100,000 years, but the timing of these events is poorly known. Here we report the paleontological findings of a multidisciplinary investigation of caves in the central Dominican Republic. These findings include new 'last occurrence' dates for the rodents Isolobodon portoricensis and Brotomys cf. voratus that take these genera to the dawn of the historic era; a first record of a last-interglacial sloth, and the first report of the upper …

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Questions And Responses For Latter-Day Saints, Donald W. Parry, Stephen D. Ricks

Maxwell Institute Publications

Since their initial discovery in 1947, the ancient scrolls found in caves near the Dead Sea have stirred public curiosity. For Latter-day Saints, whose scriptural tradition speaks of sacred records to come forth in the last days, the Dead Sea Scrolls naturally give rise to questions such as:

— Are there references to Christ or Christianity in the scrolls?

— Do the scrolls contain scripture missing from the Bible?

— Is the plan of salvation attested in the scrolls?

— Do the scrolls refer to Joseph Smith or other latter-day figures?

The Dead Sea Scrolls: Questions and Responses for Latter-day …

Abraham In Egypt, Hugh Nibley Jan 2000

Abraham In Egypt, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

The Book of Abraham, one of the canonized works of Latter-day Saint scripture brought forth by the Prophet Joseph Smith, has been attacked by critics since its publication in 1842. In Abraham in Egypt, LDS scholar Hugh Nibley draws on his erudition in ancient languages, literature, and history to defend the book on historical and doctrinal grounds.

Nibley examines the Book of Abraham’s striking connections with ancient texts and Egyptian religion and culture. He discusses the book’s many nonbiblical themes that are found in apocryphal literature not known or available in Smith’s day. In opening up many other lines …

International Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, And Environmental Security: Can The International Criminal Court Bridge The Gaps?, Mark A. Drumbl Jan 2000

International Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, And Environmental Security: Can The International Criminal Court Bridge The Gaps?, Mark A. Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

The gap between international humanitarian law and environmental security should trouble international lawyers. Just as armed conflict often creates a context in which the most serious human rights abuses occur, so too, does it create a similar context for the infliction of wanton and extensive destruction to the environment. This destruction creates profound environmental insecurity. Part (II) of this Article explores the insecurities caused by the environmental consequences of armed conflict. Although the international community has shown considerable concern for the humanitarian consequences of war, it has been significantly more hesitant in accounting for war's environmental consequences. It is for …

Punishment, Postgenocide: From Guilt To Shame To Civis In Rwanda, Mark A. Drumbl Jan 2000

Punishment, Postgenocide: From Guilt To Shame To Civis In Rwanda, Mark A. Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

Following the 1994 Rwandan genocide, national and international trials set out to encourage national reconciliation, promote peace, punish perpetrators, foster a culture of human rights, and effect justice. In this Article, Professor Mark Drumbl questions the ability of these trials to achieve these goals and suggests they may in fact aggravate ethnic identity politics, thereby threatening Rwanda's long-term stability. He argues that the highly interdependent yet dualist nature of Rwandan society, together with the widespread level of participation in and victimization by the genocide, create a situation where accountability for the violence and the deterrence of future violence can be …

Includes bibliographical references.,from the executive summary, "Recent perceptions of heightened storm activity, barrier island overwashing and barrier island breaching on the south shore of Long Island, NY have generated considerable interest in the prospective impacts of new tidal inlets formed in the barrier islands bordering Great South Bay and Moriches Bay. At the request of the National Park Service, this study was performed in order to attempt to quantify what the physical effects would be if barrier island breaching occurred at several of the more likely sites. The specific impacts …

Integration: Being Realistic Isn't Realistic, Norman Kunc Jan 2000

Integration: Being Realistic Isn't Realistic, Norman Kunc

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

An increasing amount of pressure is being put on school boards to integrate students with physical, mental, and learning disabilities into regular classrooms, and thus teachers, principals, and those within the educational hierarchy are facing a dilemma to which there seem to be no easy answers. The primary concern confronting these educators is which students should be placed within the regular classroom and which students should be placed in segregated settings - whether in segregated schools or in segregated classes within a regular school. Even within the field of Special Education, there is a wide range of ideologies as to …

The Cotton Pests In Madagascar, With Special Emphasis On The Cotton Aphid Aphis Gossypii (Hom.: Aphididae) And Its Natural Enemies, Frank Kuklinski Jan 2000

The Cotton Pests In Madagascar, With Special Emphasis On The Cotton Aphid Aphis Gossypii (Hom.: Aphididae) And Its Natural Enemies, Frank Kuklinski

All PhD Dissertations

An update on the cotton pest complex and its associated natural enemies in Madagascar is presented. Field research at experimental sites in rainfed and receding flood cotton in 1997 and 1998 showed that pest pressure in Malagasy cotton is very high, which presently makes insecticide treatments indispensable. The American bollworm Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lep.: Noctuidae) is a limiting factor for cotton production in Madagascar and can be considered the key pest, whereas the Egyptian leaf worm Spodoptera littoralis Boisduval (Lep.: Noctuidae) and the cotton aphid Aphis gossypii Glover (Hom.: Aphididae) have become significant pests as a result of indiscriminate use …
