Ship And Satellite Studies Of Mesoscale Circulation And Sperm Whale Habitats In The Northeast Gulf Of Mexico During Gulfcet Ii, Douglas C. Biggs, Robert R. Leben, Joel G. Ortega-Ortiz
Gulf of Mexico Science
Eighty-three encounters with sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) occurred on two cruises that made expendable bathythermograph + conductivity-temperature-depth surveys of cyclone-anticyclone eddy pairs in the Northeast Gulf of Mexico (NEGOM). In late summer 1996, 41 sightings of sperm whales were made and 10 acoustic contacts were registered. Of these 51 encounters, 90% were in a cyclonic area of lower than average dynamic height offshore that was surveyed from space by near-real-time altimetric sea surface height anomaly and then mapped in high resolution with shipboard measurements or within 100 km of SW Pass of the Mississippi River. In midsummer 1997, …

Mapping And Monitoring Of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation In Escambia-Pensacola Bay System, Florida, Emile M. Lores, Eva Pasko, James M. Patrick, Robert L. Quarles, Jed Campbell, John Macauley
Gulf of Mexico Science
Recently, the distribution and changes in submerged aquatic vegetation (SAY) in the Escambia-Pensacola Bay System in northeastern Florida were monitored by two techniques. One technique used divers to measure changes in the deepwater margin of beds and provided horizontal growth measurements to the nearest centimeter, the other used a differential global positioning system (DGPS) on a small boat to map the perimeter of SAY beds in shallow water. Current distribution of SAY in Escambia Bay shows that most of the SAY losses that occurred during the 1950s to 1970s have been recovered. In Santa Rosa Sound and Pensacola Bay, SAY …

Zooplankton And Micronekton In Cyclones And Anticyclones In The Northeast Gulf Of Mexico, John H. Wormuth, Patrick H. Ressler, Robert B. Cady, Elizabeth J. Harris
Gulf of Mexico Science
Two cruises were made to the northeast Gulf of Mexico in October 1996 and August 1997. The main objectives of the cruises were to survey cetacean and seabird populations and describe their hydrographic and biological environments. An additional objective was to characterize cetacean and seabird habitats in terms of food resources. During both cruises a cyclone and an anticyclone were sampled as well as the confluence region between them. Zooplankton and micronekton were sampled both directly with nets and indirectly with a 153-kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler. Within cruises, zooplankton and micronekton biomass was higher in cyclones than in anticyclones. …

Observations On The Macroalgae Inhabiting Deep-Water Hard Bank Communities In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Suzanne Fredericq, Naomi Phillips, Brigitte Gavio
Gulf of Mexico Science
A preliminary species list of subtidal macroalgal collections from established monitoring sites on two midshelf hard banks communities in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico is provided. A total of 50 taxa belonging to the green (Chlorophyta), brown (Phaeophyceae), and red (Rhodophyta) algae were identified, providing the first documentation of algal composition at Stetson Bank, TX, and Sonnier Bank, LA. Both sites are much more species rich and taxonomically distinct than previously reported, with a surprisingly different floristic composition between both. New records for the Gulf of Mexico include Laurencia chondrioides, Callithamniella tingitana, Diplothamnion jolyi, Griffithsia heteromorpha, …
Mercury Concentrations In Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) From Northwest Florida, Steven J. Rider, Douglas H. Adams
Mercury Concentrations In Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) From Northwest Florida, Steven J. Rider, Douglas H. Adams
Gulf of Mexico Science
We determined total mercury concentrations in dorsal muscle tissue of 112 spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) collected between 1993 and 1996 from Pensacola Bay and Choctawhatchee Bay, FL. We describe the relationships of length, weight, age, and sex to total mercury concentrations in this species. Fish ranged in size from 235 to 613 mm total length (TL), with a mean of 463 mm TL. The majority (84%) of the fish collected were female. The mean total mercury concentration detected in all fish combined was 0.40 ± 0.15 ppm, and in individual fish, total mercury concentration ranged from 0.11 to …
Biogeographic And Phylogenetic Investigations Of The Pantropical Genus Sargassum (Fucales, Phaetophyceae) With Respect To Gulf Of Mexico Species, Naomi Phillips, Suzanne Fredericq
Biogeographic And Phylogenetic Investigations Of The Pantropical Genus Sargassum (Fucales, Phaetophyceae) With Respect To Gulf Of Mexico Species, Naomi Phillips, Suzanne Fredericq
Gulf of Mexico Science
The genus Sargassum, despite considerable research efforts, is still one of the most systematically complex and problematic genera of the brown algae. In order to evaluate the adequacy of sectional to series level designations in the tropical subgenus, an ambitious effort was begun that will eventually include all of the east Isthmian species in a global phylogenetic analysis for the genus. This research effort is based on extensive seasonal field survey work and molecular-based parsimony analysis (chloroplast encoded ribulose-I, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase spacer region) of collected voucher specimens. The present analysis indicates that the Gulf/Caribbean species do not cluster as …
Onshore–Offshore Trends In The Size-Frequency Distribution Of Death Assemblages: Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, George M. Staff, Eric N. Powell
Onshore–Offshore Trends In The Size-Frequency Distribution Of Death Assemblages: Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, George M. Staff, Eric N. Powell
Gulf of Mexico Science
The size-frequency distributions of death assemblages were compared at three sites on the inner continental shelf of Texas by means of three descriptor variables, numerical abundance, paleoproduction (biomass at death), and paleoingestion (lifetime ingestion, a measure of energy flow). These death assemblages were then compared with six other death assemblages covering a transect from the estuary (Copano Bay, TX) to the continental slope. Typically, size-frequency distributions are based on abundance and size classes are set proportional to the largest individual in the collection. Restriction to this one analysis would have identified few of the important trends observed in this study. …

Desynchronization Of Large Scale Delayed Neural Networks, Yuming Chen, Ying Sue Huang, Jianhong Wu
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We consider a ring of identical neurons with delayed nearest neighborhood inhibitory interaction. Under general conditions, such a network has a slowly oscillatory synchronous periodic solution which is completely characterized by a scalar delay di erential equation with negative feedback. Despite the fact that the slowly oscillatory periodic solution of the scalar equation is stable, we show that the associated synchronous solution is unstable if the size of the network is large.

Think Globally, Act Locally: The Role Of State And Local Ballot Initiatives In International Environmental Law, K.K. Duvivier
Think Globally, Act Locally: The Role Of State And Local Ballot Initiatives In International Environmental Law, K.K. Duvivier
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Ballot initiatives are generally seen as a local phenomenon, and consequently have rarely been examined from an international perspective. Thus, the subcategory of international environmental initiatives is small. However, in the last thirty years, the use of ballot initiatives has increased in the United States. 17 With the expanding globalization of society, more and more ballot initiatives may have an impact on international environmental issues. Some of these international environmental ballot initiatives will pass and may become enforceable laws. Others may be invalidated if they are preempted, either by federal laws or by the federal government's control over the field …

Nature Dis-Graced And Grace De-Natured: The Problematic Of The Augustinian Doctrine Of Grace For Contemporary Theology, D. Lyle Dabney
Nature Dis-Graced And Grace De-Natured: The Problematic Of The Augustinian Doctrine Of Grace For Contemporary Theology, D. Lyle Dabney
Journal for Christian Theological Research
Contemporary theologians, as one of their number has commented, have turned from a theology of the Word to a theology of the world. After a period during the first half of the twentieth century in which theologians concerned themselves primarily with questions of their discipline's identity and character, they have in recent years turned to address as a matter of first principle the physical, the social, and the political issues in the world about them. In the course of this effort to shift theological direction, a number of fundamental issues have been raised which have yet to be fully examined. …

Celtic Traditions, Lindsay L. Stewart
Celtic Traditions, Lindsay L. Stewart

The essence of the project is to approach the legends and myths through the senses, placing them in the memory and into the viewers imagination by means of narrative imagery and fantastical sounds. Despite growing up on the west coast of Scotland I never knew the stories of the Celts, they have only recently become a part of my imagination. They are fresh to my mind, full of life, color and mystery. The world of the Celts is a wonderful place to play in. I do not propose to pass on a dictatorial view of the stories I have found. …
