Conditioned Place Preference: What Does It Add To Our Preclinical Understanding Of Drug Reward?, M. T. Bardo, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Rationale: Among the various experimental protocols that have been used to measure drug reward in laboratory animals, conditioned place preference (CPP) has been one of the most popular. However, a number of controversial issues have surrounded the use of this experimental protocol.
Objective: The present review provides a theoretical overview of some critical issues relevant to CPP. The advantages and limitations of CPP are also covered.
Results: Based on modern and traditional theoretical formulations of Pavlovian conditioning, CPP appears to reflect a preference for a context due to the contiguous association between the context and a drug stimulus. Within this …

Influence Of Dietary Mp On The Production Rates And N Usage By Steers Fed High Grain Content Diets, R. H. Pritchard, K. W. Bruns, S. J. Bierman Jan 2000

Influence Of Dietary Mp On The Production Rates And N Usage By Steers Fed High Grain Content Diets, R. H. Pritchard, K. W. Bruns, S. J. Bierman

South Dakota Beef Report, 2000

An experiment was conducted to determine if dietary metabolizable protein (MP) could be manipulated to reduce N content of feedlot effluent without compromising production rates in yearling steers fed high grain content diets. Three feeding programs included: LO) 11 % CP fed throughout; HI) 13% CP fed throughout; and LHL) 11 % fed from d 1 to 35, 13% CP (HI) fed d 36 to 94 and 1 1 % CP (LO) fed from d 95 to 1 17. An estradiol-trenbalone acetate implant was administered on d 35. There were 5 pens of 8 steers (BW=7561b) assigned to each treatment. …

Multi-Pass Reflectron Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer, Curtiss D. Hanson Jan 2000

Multi-Pass Reflectron Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer, Curtiss D. Hanson

Patents (University of Northern Iowa)

A novel design for a time-of-flight mass spectrometer capable of tandem mass spectrometry measurements with high resolution and high sensitivity using two variable reflectrons in a co-linear geometry. Variably switched reflectrons are oriented coaxially on opposing ends of the ion flight region allowing multiple passes of the ions along the flight region permitting high resolution, tandem mass spectrometry experiments to be performed. An electrostatic particle guide is incorporated to ensure high ion transmission efficiency in a multi-pass system. In addition to permitting the high transmission efficiency of ions, the EPG can be used in a bipolar pulsed mode to isolate …

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

An Efficient Wheat Transformation Procedure: Transformed Calli With Long-Term Morphogenic Potential For Plant Regeneration, Lingyu Zhang, J.J. Rybczynski, W.G. Langenberg, Amitava Mitra, Roy C. French Jan 2000

An Efficient Wheat Transformation Procedure: Transformed Calli With Long-Term Morphogenic Potential For Plant Regeneration, Lingyu Zhang, J.J. Rybczynski, W.G. Langenberg, Amitava Mitra, Roy C. French

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

A method for producing large numbers of transgenic wheat plants has been developed. With this approach, an average of 9.7% of immature embryo explants were transformed and generated multiple self-fertile, independently transformed plants. No untransformed plants, or escapes, were regenerated. This transformation procedure uses morphogenic calli derived from scutellum tissue of immature embryos of Triticum aestivum cv. Bobwhite co-bombarded with separate plasmids carrying a selectable marker gene (bar) and a gene of interest, respectively. Transformed wheat calli with a vigorous growth phenotype were obtained by extended culture on media containing 5.0 mg/l bialaphos. These calli retained morphogenic potential …

Reshaping Ahcs' Role In Biomedical Research, Karen Matherlee Jan 2000

Reshaping Ahcs' Role In Biomedical Research, Karen Matherlee

National Health Policy Forum

This issue brief explores the reconfiguration of academic health centers (AHCs) in response to health marketplace and other pressures. It reviews four roles AHCs play in medical innovation: (a) development of new drugs, devices, diagnostic techniques, and therapeutic procedures; (b) adoption of new technologies, instruments, and drugs; (c) evaluation of new technologies; and (d) assessment of the need for new modalities and monitoring of their initial uses. The paper examines ways in which these roles are enhanced or threatened by evolving economic forces in the public and private sectors.

Technology And School Reform: A View From Both Sides Of The Tracks, Mark Warschauer Jan 2000

Technology And School Reform: A View From Both Sides Of The Tracks, Mark Warschauer

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

A discourse of reform claims that schools must be transformed to take full advantage of computers, while a competing discourse of inequality warns that technology-enhanced reform is taking place only in wealthy schools, dooming poor and minority students to the wrong side of a digital divide. A qualitative study at an elite private school and an impoverished public school explored the relationship between technology, reform, and equality. ...
