Fish Hosts And Culture Of Mussel Species Of Special Concern: Annual Report For 1999, M. Christopher Barnhart, Michael S. Baird Feb 2000

Fish Hosts And Culture Of Mussel Species Of Special Concern: Annual Report For 1999, M. Christopher Barnhart, Michael S. Baird

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

This report describes results of the second year of a 3-year investigation of reproductive biology of freshwater mussels (unionoids). At least 21 North American unionoids are already extinct and 69 species are federally classified as endangered. The purpose of this project is to provide information that will facilitate conservation and management of these unique organisms. Parasitism of larval unionoids on fish is a central feature of their biology. Knowledge of the host fish and the requirements of the juvenile life stages are prerequisite for propagation and restoration of endangered species. Therefore, we are attempting to identify fish hosts and key …

Winter Habitat Use And Survival Of Female Ring-Necked Pheasants (Phasianus Colchicus) In Southeastern North Dakota, H. Jeffrey Homan, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier Feb 2000

Winter Habitat Use And Survival Of Female Ring-Necked Pheasants (Phasianus Colchicus) In Southeastern North Dakota, H. Jeffrey Homan, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

From 1992 to 1995 we used radiotelemetry to monitor winter habitat selection and survival of female ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in southeastern North Dakota. We captured 100 birds at nine sites in six study blocks centered on cattail-dominated (Typha spp.) semi-permanent wetlands. Pheasants showed nonrandom habitat use at two hierarchical scales. At the second-order scale (23-km2 blocks) semi-permanent wetlands were preferred during two winters in which habitat selection could be assessed (1992–1993 and 1994–1995). An additional second-order preference for grass-covered uplands was shown during the mild 1994–1995 winter. At the third-order scale (home-range) pheasants preferred the …

Dying To Lead: Connections Of Fear Of Death, Personal Power And Leadership, Ann Johnson Feb 2000

Dying To Lead: Connections Of Fear Of Death, Personal Power And Leadership, Ann Johnson

Theses and Graduate Projects

From the earliest phases of the development of human consciousness to the present day, it appears that death is what is most feared. Consequently, over vast periods of historical time, strategies to avoid death became increasingly sophisticated - from sacrificial rituals to complex symbolic structures created to transcend or forestall death's eventuality. The topics of death and dying have regularly mystified and engaged many of the world's most highly respected leaders, from scientists and healers to playwrights and poets; and their extensive observations - both in scope and depth - illuminate the fact that death and dying are an extremely …

Brown-Headed Cowbird Brood Parasitism In Bison-Grazed And Ungrazed Tallgrass Prairie, Alexandra C. Latham '00 Feb 2000

Brown-Headed Cowbird Brood Parasitism In Bison-Grazed And Ungrazed Tallgrass Prairie, Alexandra C. Latham '00

Honors Projects

The Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater has long been associated with bison (Bos bison) in North America on the Great Plains (Friedmann 1929). As a result, I anticipated that cowbirds would parasitize host nests more frequently in the presence of bison than in their absence. I predicted that several common ground-nesting avian species, Dickcissels (Spiza americana), Grasshopper Sparrows (Ammodramus savannarum), and Eastern Meadowlarks (Sturnella magna), would suffer higher frequencies of brood parasitism in bison-grazed habitat than in ungrazed habitat on the tallgrass Konza Prairie Research Natural Area, located in northeastern Kansas. The frequency of cowbird parasitism for all species combined was …

High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Separation Of The Enantiomers Of Unusual Α-Amino Acid Analogues, Antal Péter, Edit Olajos, Richard Casimir, Dirk Tourwé, Quirinus B. Broxterman, Bernard Kaptein, Daniel W. Armstrong Feb 2000

High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Separation Of The Enantiomers Of Unusual Α-Amino Acid Analogues, Antal Péter, Edit Olajos, Richard Casimir, Dirk Tourwé, Quirinus B. Broxterman, Bernard Kaptein, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The direct and indirect stereochemical resolution of the enantiomers of ring- and α-methyl-substituted phenylalanines and phenylalanine amides was attempted by high-performance liquid chromatographic methods. The direct separation was carried out on two chiral stationary phases, the crown-ether- based Crownpak CR (+), and the teicoplanin-based Chirobiotic T, while the indirect resolution was performed by applying pre-column derivatization with 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl isothiocyanate (GITC) and Nα- (2,4-dinitro-5-fluorophenyl)-L-alanine amide (Marfey's reagent, FDAA). The Chirobiotic T column was efficient in the separation of ring- and α-methyl- substituted phenylalanine analogues but was ineffective for the amides of these analogues. The Crownpak CR (+) column separated the ring-substituted …

Little Known Facts About Alfalfa, Don Ball Feb 2000

Little Known Facts About Alfalfa, Don Ball

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

During the previous nineteen Kentucky Alfalfa Conferences, many topics pertaining to alfalfa have undoubtedly been addressed. In fact, some topics such as establishment techniques, varieties, and factors affecting yield are important enough that they have probably been discussed in one form or another during most of these conferences.

However, a twentieth-year state commodity conference is a milestone that deserves some special consideration, and which should justify inclusion of one or more unique topics on the program. This line of thinking led to idea that for this presentation it might be interesting to discuss some facts about alfalfa that are not …

Reducing Alfalfa Harvesting Losses, Michael Collins Feb 2000

Reducing Alfalfa Harvesting Losses, Michael Collins

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

In some areas of the country, producers store a substantial portion of their forage for winter feeding as silage or haylage. However, hay remains the most popular storage method for forage. Hay stores well for long periods and is better suited to cash sale and transportation than silage. Mechanical conditioning, which gained acceptance during the 1950's is probably still the greatest single change in hay harvesting and storage technology during this century. However, a number of other noteworthy changes and innovations have occurred in recent years which have helped to reduce the extent of losses during hay harvesting and storage.
