A Direct Practice Evaluation On The Effectiveness Of Using A Strength-Based Approach With Children Living In Foster Care, Emily E. Vincent Mar 2000

A Direct Practice Evaluation On The Effectiveness Of Using A Strength-Based Approach With Children Living In Foster Care, Emily E. Vincent

Theses and Graduate Projects

This mixed method qualitative / quantitative direct practice evaluation was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of working from a strength-based versus a problem-based approach with children living in foster care. A strength-based approach focuses on a client's positive qualities and identifies the skills they possess that will help them to overcome their situation. The purpose for this approach is to build on and encourage, through a strength-based practice, the certain individual attributes of the child and family and community supports that can enhance resiliency in children.

Three boys living in foster care ages 8-11 were evaluated three times over a …

This edition of the Wooster Voice released the obituary of Wooster student Christine Hulke (1979-2000). Christine died while hiking with her twin sister and two friends from the college in Mohican State Park. Christine was 20 years old, and an active and bright member of the women's soccer team. She played alongside her twin sister, and both women lived on the same floor of Holden Annex. Christine was a beloved member of the team, and a beloved student at the college. Christine's parents were vacationing in Mexico for their second honeymoon when they were informed of Christine's passing. The college …

Dynamic Fluvial Systems And Gravel Progradation In The Himalayan Foreland, Nicholas Brozovic, Douglas W. Burbank Mar 2000

Dynamic Fluvial Systems And Gravel Progradation In The Himalayan Foreland, Nicholas Brozovic, Douglas W. Burbank

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Although the large-scale stratigraphy of many terrestrial foreland basins is punctuated by major episodes of gravel progradation, the relationships of such facies to hinterland tectonism and climate change are often unclear. Structural reentrants provide windows into older and more proximal parts of the foreland than are usually exposed, and thus provide key insights to earlier phases of foreland evolution. Our magnetostratigraphic studies show that, although the major lithofacies preserved within the Himachal Pradesh structural reentrant in northwestern India resemble Neogene facies in Pakistan, they have a much greater temporal and spatial variability. From 11.5 to 7 Ma, major facies boundaries …

Pharmacotherapy Of Smoking Cessation, Kolawole S. Okuyemi, Jasjit S. Ahluwalia, Kari J. Harris

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable diseases in the United States. Smoking accounts for more than 400,000 deaths yearly and 30% of all cancer deaths. Primary care physicians have access to 70% of smokers, approximately 60% of whom are perceived to be in excellent health. Recent advances in the pharmacotherapy of nicotine addiction, including nicotine nasal spray, nicotine inhaler, bupropion hydrochloride, and over-the-counter transdermal nicotine patches, have increased the treatment options physicians can offer to smokers. Physicians, especially thosein primary care specialties, should familiarize themselves with these products to improve efforts to help their patients stop smoking. …

Agents’ Perceptions Of Structure: How Illinois Organic Farmers View Political, Economic, Social, And Ecological Factors, Leslie Duram Mar 2000

Agents’ Perceptions Of Structure: How Illinois Organic Farmers View Political, Economic, Social, And Ecological Factors, Leslie Duram

Publications

Various structural factors influence organic farmer decision-making. Analyses that combine structure and agency provide an opportunity for understanding farmers' perceptions of the political, economic, and social "world" in which they operate. Rich conversational interviews, conducted with twenty certified organic farmers in Illinois and analyzed with multiple qualitative methods, show how farmers mediate structural concerns. In addition to political, economic, and social structures, a fourth structure is needed. Indeed these organic farmers emphasize the importance of ecological factors in their decision-making. Within the perceived economic, political, social, and ecological structures, numerous topics (i.e., marketing, policy, family, ecosystems) and subtopics (i.e., diversification, …

Body Language, Security And E-Commerce, Norman Desmarais

Library Faculty and Staff papers

Security is becoming an increasingly more important concern both at the desktop level and at the network level. This article discusses several approaches to authenticating individuals through the use of biometric devices. While libraries might not implement such devices, they may appear in the near future of desktop computing, particularly for access to institutional computers or for access to sensitive information. Other approaches to computer security focus on protecting the contents of electronic transmissions and verification of individual users. After a brief overview of encryption technologies, the article examines public-key cryptography which is getting a lot of attention in the …

Codebook: The Lsay 1999 Teacher Survey For The Y98 Cohort Technical Paper No. 20, Sue Fullarton

LSAY Technical Reports

Students participating in this LSAY cohort were originally sampled in 1998 from 296 schools nationally. In 1999 the schools from which the original sample of students was drawn took part in a survey to collect information about the features and programs of schools, as well as features of teachers and teaching, which might influence the progress of students in their school and in their later work careers. The survey involved two questionnaires: (1) a school questionnaire to be completed by the principal (or other school representative) and (2) a questionnaire to a sample of ten Year 10 teachers. The assistance …

Type I Nitroreductases In Soil Enterobacteria Reduce Tnt (2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene) And Rdx (Hexahydro-1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-Triazine), Christopher Kitts, Chad E. Green, Rebecca A. Otley, Marc A. Alvarez, Pat J. Unkefer Mar 2000

Type I Nitroreductases In Soil Enterobacteria Reduce Tnt (2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene) And Rdx (Hexahydro-1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-Triazine), Christopher Kitts, Chad E. Green, Rebecca A. Otley, Marc A. Alvarez, Pat J. Unkefer

Biological Sciences

Many enteric bacteria express a type I oxygen-insensitive nitroreductase, which reduces nitro groups on many different nitroaromatic compounds under aerobic conditions. Enzymatic reduction of nitramines was also documented in enteric bacteria under anaerobic conditions. This study indicates that nitramine reduction in enteric bacteria is carried out by the type I, or oxygen-insensitive nitroreductase, rather than a type II enzyme. The enteric bacterium Morganella morganii strain B2 with documented hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) nitroreductase activity, and Enterobacter cloacae strain 96-3 with documented 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) nitroreductase activity, were used here to show that the explosives TNT and RDX were both reduced by a type …

Optical Discrimination Of A Phytoplankton Species In Natural Mixed Populations, David F. Millie, Mark A. Moline, Oscar Schofield Mar 2000

Optical Discrimination Of A Phytoplankton Species In Natural Mixed Populations, David F. Millie, Mark A. Moline, Oscar Schofield

Biological Sciences

Developing optical detection techniques for discriminating particular phytoplankon species in mixed assemblages has long been a goal of aquatic scientists. Previously, a processing algorithm for phytoplankton absorption spectra was reported that suggested detection of the red tide dinoflagellate Gymnodinium breve was possible. The algorithm evaluated the fourth derivative of the particulate absorption spectrum of an unknown sample and compared it to a standard fourth derivative spectrum for G. breve using a similarity index. We report here the first-time application of this technique to the detection of G. breve in natural, mixed phytoplankton communities. Pigment and spectral absorption data were collected …
