Spirituality And Rehabilitation: Intimate Views From Insiders, Dierdre Woody
Spirituality And Rehabilitation: Intimate Views From Insiders, Dierdre Woody
New England Journal of Public Policy
The author became interested in spirituality and rehabilitation during her summer 1999 employment at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institute-Graterford and as a legal intern in the law firm of Woody and Falkenbach, which specializes in criminal defense work, during the summers of 1991 to 1998. The article focuses on the role of spirituality in rehabilitation processes in correctional settings. It pays special attention to the sources offaith and inner strength, the nature of spiritual guidance, the roles of values, beliefs, and moral commitments, and the effects of cultural, social, political, and economic forces.

A method of using quaternary ammonium compounds for inhibiting attachment of and removing a broad spectrum of foodborne microbial contamination from food products is described. The method uses quaternary ammonium compounds for inhibiting attachment of and removing microorganisms such as, Staphylococcus, Campylobacter, Arcobacter, Listeria, Aeromonas, Bacillus, Salmonella, non-toxin producing Escherichia, and pathogenic toxin-producing Escherichia such as O157:H7, fungi such as Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium chrysogenum, and parasites such as Entameba histolytica from a broad range of food. The foods that can be treated by this method are meat, seafood, vegetables, and fruit.

Univercity News (2000-03-20)
UniverCity News, 1998-2001
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Proteins Needed For Vesicle Budding From The Golgi Complex Are Also Required For The Docking Step Of Homotypic Vacuole Fusion, Albert Price, William Wickner, Christian Ungermann
Proteins Needed For Vesicle Budding From The Golgi Complex Are Also Required For The Docking Step Of Homotypic Vacuole Fusion, Albert Price, William Wickner, Christian Ungermann
Dartmouth Scholarship
Vam2p/Vps41p is known to be required for transport vesicles with vacuolar cargo to bud from the Golgi. Like other VAM-encoded proteins, which are needed for homotypic vacuole fusion, we now report that Vam2p and its associated protein Vam6p/Vps39p are needed on each vacuole partner for homotypic fusion. In vitro vacuole fusion occurs in successive steps of priming, docking, and membrane fusion. While priming does not require Vam2p or Vam6p, the functions of these two proteins cannot be fulfilled until priming has occurred, and each is required for the docking reaction which culminates in trans-SNARE pairing. Consistent with their dual function …
The Docking Stage Of Yeast Vacuole Fusion Requires The Transfer Of Proteins From A Cis-Snare Complex To A Rab/Ypt Protein, Albert Price, Darren Seals, William Wickner, Christian Ungermann
The Docking Stage Of Yeast Vacuole Fusion Requires The Transfer Of Proteins From A Cis-Snare Complex To A Rab/Ypt Protein, Albert Price, Darren Seals, William Wickner, Christian Ungermann
Dartmouth Scholarship
The homotypic fusion of yeast vacuoles requires Sec18p (NSF)-driven priming to allow vacuole docking, but the mechanism that links priming and docking is unknown. We find that a large multisubunit protein called the Vam2/6p complex is bound to cis-paired SNAP receptors (SNAREs) on isolated vacuoles. This association of the Vam2/6p complex with the cis-SNARE complex is disrupted during priming. The Vam2/6p complex then binds to Ypt7p, a guanosine triphosphate binding protein of the Rab family, to initiate productive contact between vacuoles. Thus, cis-SNARE complexes can contain Rab/Ypt effectors, and these effectors can be mobilized by NSF/Sec18p-driven priming, allowing their direct …

The major target tissues for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection are B lymphocytes and epithelial cells of the oropharyngeal zone. The product of the EBV BZLF1 early gene, EB1, a member of the basic leucine-zipper family of transcription factors, interacts with both viral and cellular promoters and transcription factors, modulating the reactivation of latent EBV infection. Here, we characterize a novel cellular protein interacting with the basic domains of EB1 and c-Jun, and competing of their binding to the AP1 consensus site. The transcript is present in a wide variety of human adult, fetal, and tumor tissues, and the protein is …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The search for appropriate vaccine candidates and drug targets against onchocerciasis has so far been confronted with several limitations due to the unavailability of biological material, appropriate molecular resources, and knowledge of the parasite biology. To identify targets for vaccine or chemotherapy development we have undertaken two approaches. First, cDNA expression libraries were constructed from life cycle stages that are critical for establishment of Onchocerca volvulus infection, the third-stage larvae (L3) and the molting L3. A gene discovery effort was then initiated by random expressed sequence tag analysis of 5,506 cDNA clones. Cluster analyses showed that many of the transcripts …

Novel Function Of Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase In T Cell Ca2+ Signaling, Ao-Lin Hsu, Tsui-Ting Ching, Goutam Sen, Da-Sheng Wan, Subbarao Bondada, Kalwant S. Authi, Ching-Shih Chen

This study presents evidence that phosphoinositide (PI) 3-kinase is involved in T cell Ca2+ signaling via a phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate PI(3,4,5)P3-sensitive Ca2+entry pathway. First, exogenous PI(3,4,5)P3 at concentrations close to its physiological levels induces Ca2+ influx in T cells, whereas PI(3,4)P2, PI(4,5)P2, and PI(3)P have no effect on [Ca2+]i. This Ca2+ entry mechanism is cell type-specific as B cells and a number of cell lines examined do not respond to PI(3,4,5)P3 stimulation. Second, inhibition of PI 3-kinase by wortmannin and by overexpression of the …

On the Green is an internal publication of Gallaudet College, which later became Gallaudet University. It notified employees of updates around the campus and in the broader community, including new construction and the establishment of new academic programs. Running until 2010, it was supplanted by various forms of online mass communications across multiple audiences.

Plankton Community Composition, Production, And Respiration In Relation To Dissolved Inorganic Carbon On The West Florida Shelf, April 1996, Gary L. Hitchcock, Gabriel A. Vargo, Mary-Lynn L. Dickson
Marine Science Faculty Publications
In April 1996 the Florida Shelf Lagrangian Experiment examined dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) dynamics on the West Florida Shelf. DIC concentrations increased over 2 weeks at an average rate of 1 μmol kg−1 d−1 in a patch of the intentionally released tracers sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) and helium 3 (3He). Approximately 20% of the increase was due to air‐sea exchange with the remaining 80% attributed to plankton respiration [Wanninkhof et al., 1997]. Here we present particulate matter concentrations, phytoplankton production, and community respiration rates from the tracer patch that suggest that heterotrophs dominated …
