Effects Of The Zebra Mussel On Nitrogen Dynamics And The Microbial Community At The Sediment-Water Interface, Peter J. Lavrentyev, Wayne S. Gardner, Longyuan Yang Mar 2000

Effects Of The Zebra Mussel On Nitrogen Dynamics And The Microbial Community At The Sediment-Water Interface, Peter J. Lavrentyev, Wayne S. Gardner, Longyuan Yang

Biology Faculty Research

A flow-through experiment was conducted on intact cores of sediments from Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, to examine how trophic interactions between filter-feeding bivalve mussels and microbial populations could affect nitrogen dynamics at the sediment-water interface. The zebra mussels used in this experiment removed a large proportion of protozoa and phytoplankton from the overlying water, particularly heterotrophic nanoplankton (up to 82%), while bacterial populations showed less change. A 3-fold decrease in the protozoan to bacterial carbon ratio corresponded to a 2.5-fold increase in relative ammonium removal rates as estimated from the dark loss of N-15-ammonium. Excretion by the bivalves also increased …

Us Government Information: Selected Current Issues In Public Access Vs. Private Competition, Susan Mcmullen Mar 2000

Us Government Information: Selected Current Issues In Public Access Vs. Private Competition, Susan Mcmullen

Library Faculty Publications

Web information systems are having a profound effect on the way information is being disseminated today. Current technological advances have caused many government agencies to re-evaluate their practice of contracting with private sector vendors who have traditionally repackaged and marketed the agency's raw data. These new opportunities for government agencies wishing to make information publicly accessible have blurred the traditional distinctions between public and private dissemination activities. Low-cost public dissemination of information has resulted in private sector vendors arguing that public electronic distribution and publication creates unfair competition. New partnerships, such as the recent venture between the National Technical Information …

Genetic Parameters Among Weight, Prolificacy, And Wool Traits Of Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, And Targhee Sheep, C. M. Bromley, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck Mar 2000

Genetic Parameters Among Weight, Prolificacy, And Wool Traits Of Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, And Targhee Sheep, C. M. Bromley, G. D. Snowder, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Genetic parameters for Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, and Targhee sheep were estimated using REML with animal models for prolificacy, weight, and wool traits. All bivariate analyses included a covariance between additive genetic effects for the two traits plus appropriate additional covariances. Number of observations by breed ranged from 5,140 to 7,095 for prolificacy traits, from 7,750 to 9,530 for weight traits, and from 4,603 to 34,746 for wool traits. Heritability estimates ranged from .03 to .11 for prolificacy traits (litter size at birth and litter size at weaning), from .09 to .26 for weight traits (birth weight and average daily gain), …
