Herbivory is an integral component of ecosystems that impacts plant communities and ecosystem processes, and affects forage availability and quality for the herbivore. I investigated the effects of lesser snow geese (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) and Canada geese (Branta canadensis) on two salt marsh communities, a sedge meadow and an herb meadow, in Cook Inlet, Alaska. Geese used the marshes during spring migration for a brief period, and foraging intensity was low compared to other goose-grazing systems. Seventy percent of the snow goose diet was on belowground plant tissues, whereas 92% of the Canada goose diet was on aboveground shoots. In …

During 1997 and 1998, unusual physical conditions caused dramatic changes in the regional oceanic environment and function of the southeastern Bering Sea ecosystem. The changes in ecosystem function were examined using ¹³C and ¹⁵N tracer techniques. In 1997, unusually clear and calm conditions allowed an ice-related early bloom over the middle shelf of the southeastern Bering Sea and resulted in nitrate uptake below the pycnocline. In 1998, the duration of phytoplankton growth was extended by warm temperatures and frequent storms that resulted in slow growth of phytoplankton and prevented rapid utilization of nitrate over the shelf. Beginning with the assumption that women of all cultures experience a conflict between their culturally prescribed gender roles and their individual sexual desires, I comparie the characters Edna Pontellier of Kate Chopin's 'The Awakening' with Isma and Hajila of Assia Djebar's 'Ombre Sultane.' Each woman undergoes a process of awakening body consciousness that leads to her first experience of desire, an essential link between physical and mental consciousness. The expression of female desire conflicts with prescribed cultural behavior. Each character also moves away from her family and cultural roots, thus assuring herself a necessary distance for rebellion against social standards. …

Vegetation on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska, which is characterized by transitions from tundra to boreal forest, may be sensitive to the influences of climate change on disturbance and species composition. To determine the ability to detect decadal-scale structural changes in vegetation, Change Vector Analysis (CVA) techniques were evaluated for Landsat TM imagery of the Seward Peninsula. Scenes were geographically corrected to sub-pixel accuracy and then radiometrically rectified. The CVA results suggest that shrubbiness is increasing on the Seward Peninsula. The CVA detected vegetation change on more than 50% of the burned region on TM imagery for up to nine years …

Habitat selection by calving caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) of the Central Arctic Herd, Alaska, was assessed in relation to distance from roads, vegetation type, relative plant biomass (NDVI; Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), accumulation of plant biomass during early lactation (NDVIrate), snow cover, and terrain ruggedness. From 183 calving sites of 96 radio collared- females, 1980-95, calving distribution was estimated in reference (no development) and treatment (oilfields present) zones east and west of the Sagavanirktok River, respectively. In the reference zone, caribou regularly selected wet-graminoid vegetation, above-median NDVIrate, and non-rugged terrain; concentrated calving remained in habitats with zonal average NDVI on …

In response to recent decline, we compared migration and nesting chronology, nest success, and clutch size of spectacled eiders nesting at Kigigak Island with those nesting on Kashunuk River to better understand regulation of the spectacled eider breeding population on Y-K Delta. We also examined and compared subpopulation relationships between nest site fidelity and breeding performance. We examined the relationship between female age and distance moved between consecutive year nest sites. Clutch sizes were comparable between the two sites and declined seasonally with older females laying earlier and larger clutches. Mayfield nest success was higher due to lower predation and …

Models predict that photochemistry is the primary contribution to the observed spring surface ozone maxima in the Northern Hemisphere. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the limiting reagents for photochemical ozone production. This fact leads to an apparent paradox, because the short lifetime of NOx should lead to a low mixing ratio of NOx far from source regions. However, chemical reservoirs of NOx such as peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) may provide a transport pathway for delivering NOx to 'clean' marine Pacific air masses. Emperor Geese (Chen canagica) breed on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in an area inhabited by three other goose species. Whereas populations of other geese increased since the mid 1980s, Emperor Goose numbers remained low. Because survival and habitat selection by broods of Emeperor Geese had not been studied previously and numbers of predatory Glaucous Gulls (Larus hyperboreus) had recently increased, I studied brood rearing ecology of Emperor Geese during 1993-1996 to assess whether this seasonal period could be limiting population growth. Survival of goslings to 30 days varied among years from 0.32 to 0.70 and was primarily influenced by mortality during …

In Pleistocene Beringia, large-scale glaciations exposed high latitude species to variable environmental conditions that created disjunct populations of terrestrial and marine species. The general nature of the dynamic biogeographic history of Beringia can be assessed by studying genetic patterns across many Beringian organisms. Mitochondrial DNA sequences were used to study the phylogenetic and phylogeographic structure of the threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus. A 714 bp fragment of the cytochrome b gene was sequenced from 66 individuals from 17 locations extending from southeast Alaska northwest to coastal Siberia. This thesis describes research aimed at understanding the structure and function of LysR-type transcriptional regulators. I studied two LysR-type proteins. One from the archaeon Methanococcus jannaschii, MJ-LysR. The other is from Burkholderia cepacia, DgdR. The MJ-LysR is the first putative LysR-type transcriptional regulator found in archaea. It is surprising that a prokaryotic transcriptional regulator is present in archaea, whose basal transcription machinery and RNA polymerase are more closely related to those of eukaryotes. To elucidate the structure and function of M-LysR protein, the gene was subcloned and expressed in E. coli. The gene product was isolated and purified by heat …

Mitochondrial Dna Haplotype Genealogies And Population Histories In The Late Pleistocene: Contrasts Of Pink Salmon Broodyears, Dmitri Yurievich Churikov

Seven segments of mtDNA, comprising 97% of the mitochondrial genome, were PCR-amplified and examined for restriction site variation using 13 restriction endonucleases in three Oncorhynchus species: pink (O. gorbuscha), chum (O. keta), and sockeye (O. nerka) salmon. Multiple haplotypes, but shallow mtDNA trees were observed for each species. 'Star-like' structures indicating historical population explosions were observed in haplotype genealogies. Given reasonable rates of mtDNA sequence evolution, this may reflect recolonization of vast areas in Alaska after the last (Wisconsinian) or preceding (Illinoian) glacier retreats. Becharof Lake is home to both Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) and the closely related Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), two species known not only to be similar in appearance but also to exhibit similar life histories. The body morphometry, otolith microchemistry, and stomach contents of both species were studied in fish collected from May to September 1998. Morphometric and meristic analysis revealed clear separation in body structure between the two species, as well as potential sub-populations within each species. Otolith microchemistry revealed incidences of anadromy and non-anadromy in both species. Stomach content analysis revealed a broad feeding niche but smaller ranges …

Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) are commercially exploited along the Asiatic and North American Pacific Ocean continental shelves. In Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska, herring were commercially important until a year class failures in 1993. A noticeable lack of life history information on juveniles was available in PWS to use for studies addressing the failed recruitment. This study describes the seasonal herring feeding ecology in PWS nursery areas from 1996 to 1998. Zooplankton from 535 vertical tows and herring diet data from 3,282 stomach contents were collected from Eaglek, Simpson, Whale and Zaikof Bays. A Qualitative Study Of The Women And Children's Residential Treatment Center Substance Abuse Treatment Program, Phillip Elwyn Gilbert

This thesis presents the results of a formative process evaluation of the Fairbanks Native Association Women and Children's Residential Treatment Center abuse program using interviews, participant observation, and grounded theory methods of qualitative research. Eight clients and eight staff were interviewed across the domains of culture, spirituality and family. A theory of program operation emanated from and was grounded in the data: program functioning was significantly affected by the relationship perceived by the clients to exist between themselves, (their needs, values, desires, goals and world view) and the program's goals and priorities.

The feeding habitats of the Western Arctic bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) during summer are generally known, but the precise amounts of food consumed from the eastern Beaufort Sea (EBS) are not known. [Alpha]13C and [alpha]15N ratios in whale tissues were used to estimate the amounts of food required from EBS. The feeding strategies of adults and subadults were also compared. For all whales, the [alpha]13C values in muscle sampled in fall were not significantly different from those in the muscle sampled in spring, indicating most food of adults and subadults comes from the Bering/Chukchi seas. Recent declines of marine mammal seabird populations in the Bering Sea have raised the question of whether the changes are caused by fishing pressure or a decrease in ecosystem carrying capacity. Stable carbon (¹³C⁾ and nitrogen (¹⁵N⁾ isotope ratios in Thick⁻billed Murre muscle and feathers were used as indicators of changing seasonal primary production. ¹³C values in phytoplankton vary directly with growth rates and are passed up the food web to consumers. Muscle and feather ¹³C values decreased over the period 1976-1998 suggesting a decline in Bering/Chukchi continental shelf primary production. A Comparison Of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka) In Two Climate Regimes In The North Pacific Ocean Using Stable Carbon And Nitrogren Isotope Ratios, Franklin Robert Satterfield

This study explores how the climate shift in the late 1970's impacted sockeye salmon feeding. Stable isotope ratios (¹³C and ¹⁵N) of recent muscle and scale tissues from five mature salmon species are highly correlated (R²=0.96 and 0.91, respectively), validating the use of archived scales for retrospective analysis. These data suggest a trophic separation by species with chinook occupying the highest level, followed by coho with some degree of overlap among sockeye, pink and chum at the lowest level. Hydra vulgaris mesoglea is a primitive basement membrane that also exhibits some features of an interstitial matrix. We have characterized cDNAs that encode the full-length hydra α1(IV) chain. The 5169-base pair transcript encodes a protein of 1723 amino acids, including an interrupted 1455-residue collagenous domain and a 228-residue C-terminal noncollagenous domain. N-terminal sequence analyses of collagen IV peptides suggest the molecule is homotrimeric. Denatured hydra type IV collagen protein occurs as dimers and higher order aggregates held together by nonreducible cross-links. Hydra collagen IV exhibits no functional evidence for the presence of a 7 S domain. Type IV collagen is …

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

This paper provides a key to twelve species (in ten genera and three subfamilies) of Lecithoceridae from Guizhou Province, China. Among them, three species are unnamed and eight are new Guizhou Province records. The female of Opacoptera ecblasta Wu is known for the first time and its genitalia are illustrated for the first time.
