Evolutionary psychologists claim that the mind contains “hundreds or thousands” of “genetically specified” modules, which are evolutionary adaptations for their cognitive functions. We argue that, while the adult human mind/brain typically contains a degree of modularization, its “modules” are neither genetically specified nor evolutionary adaptations. Rather, they result from the brain's developmental plasticity, which allows environmental task demands a large role in shaping the brain's information-processing structures. The brain's developmental plasticity is our fundamental psychological adaptation, and the “modules” that result from it are adaptive responses to local conditions, not past evolutionary environments. If different individuals share common environments, however, …

The dynamics of seeking causation and the dynamics of subjectivity are presented and then brought together in a consideration of the three core components of the religious quest: the search for and experience of ultimate explanations, the interiority of religious experience (“spirituality”), and the empathic experience of religious fellowship.

(First paragraph) This technical guidance document is based on the concept that bioassessment and biocriteria programs for estuaries and near coastal waters are interrelated and critical components of comprehensive water resource protection and management. Understanding how estuarine ecosystems function and respond to human activity requires a holistic approach to protection and management that integrates biological assessments into the more traditional chemical and physical evaluations. Section 101 of the Clean Water Act requires federal and state agencies to “restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation’s waters.”

The phylum Cnidarians are aquatic animals, including jellyfish, hydra, sea anemones, and corals. They are the simplest metazoans having a nervous system and are diploblastic. Cnidarians are obligate predators that capture prey using specialized stinging cells called cnidocytes. The cnidocyte contains a nematocyst, which is a capsule containing an inverted, hollow tubule. Prey contacting the tentacle triggers the nematocyst tubule to rapidly evert; a process called discharge. The everting tubule penetrates and envenomates the prey, which is carried to the mouth by tentacle movements.

Generally both chemical and mechanical stimuli are needed to trigger discharge. The cnidocytes, in sea anemones, …

Glucocorticoids (GCs) inhibit bone formation in vivo and inhibit osteoblast proliferation and collagen synthesis in vitro. These effects may be mediated by alterations in the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system. In the present study of normal human osteoblast-like (HOB) cells, we tested the hypothesis that dexamethasone (Dex) inhibits the expression of IGF binding protein-5 (IGFBP-5). Dex decreased IGFBP-5 mRNA levels to 54% of control after 4 hr. Dex did not modify the decay of IGFBP-5 mRNA in transcriptionally arrested osteoblast cells. Dex decreased IGFBP-5 hnRNA levels to 67% of control after 2 hr, and the activity of the human IGFBP- …

The purpose of this study is to develop a new approach for monitoring the function of implanted cells by a Renilla luciferase -glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor (RUC-GDNF) fusion protein in CSF. The RUC-GDNF protein is expected to report GDNF secreted from the cell by bioluminescence through luciferase activity.

Current ex vivo gene therapy using GDNF is limited by lack of a monitoring mechanism to determine the expression of GDNF once transformed cells or vector DNA are injected into animal models. A possible cause for root canal failure is the persistence of bacteria that have colonized dentinal tubules. To reduce this risk and, if possible, to also shorten the time consuming endodontic therapy, new equipment and materials are constantly being introduced. The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of disinfection of dentinal tubules by intracanal laser irradiation using an in vitro model. The groups irradiated by various lasers were compared with calcium hydroxide, a material frequently used as intracanal medication between appointments. Title IX's three-part test for measuring discrimination in the provision of athletic opportunities to male and female students has generated heated controversy in recent years. In this Article, Professor Brake discusses the theoretical underpinnings behind the three-part test and offers a comprehensive justification of this theory as applied to the context of sport. She begins with an analysis of the test's relationship to other areas of sex discrimination law, concluding that, unlike most contexts, Title IX rejects formal equality as its guiding theory, adopting instead an approach that focuses on the institutional structures that subordinate girls and women in sport. …

There is little known about how timber harvest practices have affected terrestrial amphibians in the northern Rocky Mountains. Especially lacking is information on the effects of revised harvest methods that fall within the framework of environmental or New Forestry. We estimated the relative abundance of a common forest amphibian, the long-toed salamander (Ambystoma macrodactylum) captured in pitfall arrays on intact, environmentally harvested, and overstory-removal harvested sites in mixed-conifer forests of western Montana. Pitfall data from 1994 through 1996 showed that previously logged sites contained significantly fewer long-toed salamanders regardless of harvest method used. The number of salamanders captured …

Elk (Cervus elaphus) have been a major consideration in forest management in the western United States. Other ungulate species that are sympatric with elk, such as Shiras moose (Alces alces shirasi), have often received less management consideration. We studied a moose population in the Garnet Mountains of west-central Montana from 1997 to 2000, to learn more about moose habitat preferences. Researchers have come to different conclusions about the usefulness of habitat-relationship models for predicting species presence or absence. This difference frequently stems from a failure to recognize the effects of spatial scales at which the models are applied. We examined the effects of model complexity, spatial data resolution, and scale of application on the performance of bird habitat relationship (BHR) models on the Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area and on the Idaho portion of the U.S. Forest Service's Northern Region. Spirituality has become an increasingly important topic in healthcare and specifically in occupational therapy. Previous studies of spirituality in occupational therapy indicated that while therapists believed spirituality was important to health and rehabilitation potential, few therapists reported incorporating spirituality into treatment (Engquist, Short-DeGraff, Gliner, & Oltjenbruns, 1997; Howe, 1996; Rose, 1999). This study utilized a survey design to examine occupational therapists' current beliefs and practices regarding spirituality, as well as asking therapists to identify barriers to the use of spirituality in treatment.

The results of this study indicate that beliefs and practices regarding spirituality in occupational therapy may be changing. …

The purpose of this study is to better understand the successful educational experiences among Native American doctoral recipients and why they succeeded where so many others have failed to reach that level of education. The participants' individual experiences were recorded during the in-depth interviews. Their own voices have indicated their path to success.

Qualitative research methods were used in the study including interviews, participant observation, and follow-up telephone interviews. Data were analyzed for themes and results were discussed in reference to the literature. Recommendations for parents, teachers, school administrators, mentors, faculty, and college administrators were provided.

The genetic transmission of a pattern of impairments associated with alcoholism has been supported by research literature (Dawson, Harford, & Grant, 1992; Schuckit, 1986). No single factor appears to cause the development of a substance abuse problem, but a family history of alcoholism may be one predictive factor (Goodwin, 1985). The offspring of alcoholics are more likely to display disinhibited behavior and impulsivity (Pihl, Peterson, & Finn, 1990) and are more likely to develop drinking problems than the general population (Goodwin, 1971). A phenological study of Acacia berlandieri, A. minuata, A. rigidula, A. schaffneri, and Chloroleucon ebano was conducted at three sites in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas from July 1998 to August 1999. Flowering in Acacia species occurred between January and April 1999, and was influenced by precipitation only in A. minuata . The timing of flowering appears to be influenced by the amount of time needed for fruit maturation. Precipitation, photoperiod, and temperature influenced the timing of fruiting in all species except A. berlandieri . Shoot elongation and leaf maturation in Acacia species were positively correlated with …

Progenics's rCD4-IgG2 (PRO-542) is a recombinant fusion protein, which has been developed using the company's Universal Antiviral Binding (UnAB) technology, and is in phase I/II clinical trials for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type I (HIV-1) infection [273391]. At the beginning of 1997, Progenics received a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious diseases (NIAID) to fund the development of PRO-542 [236048]. A further grant of $2.7 million was awarded in August 1998 for the clinical evaluation of PRO-542 and other anti-HIV therapies [294200]. Progenics is collaborating with the …
