Angiotensin Ii Promotes Atherosclerotic Lesions And Aneurysms In Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice, Alan Daugherty, Michael W. Manning, Lisa A. Cassis

Increased plasma concentrations of angiotension II (Ang II) have been implicated in atherogenesis. To examine this relationship directly, we infused Ang II or vehicle for 1 month via osmotic minipumps into mature apoE–/– mice. These doses of Ang II did not alter arterial blood pressure, body weight, serum cholesterol concentrations, or distribution of lipoprotein cholesterol. However, Ang II infusions promoted an increased severity of aortic atherosclerotic lesions. These Ang II–induced lesions were predominantly lipid-laden macrophages and lymphocytes; moreover, Ang II promoted a marked increase in the number of macrophages present in the adventitial tissue underlying lesions. Development Of Diagnostic Concentrations For Monitoring Bacillus Thuringiensis Resistance In European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Paula C.R.G. Marcon, Blair D. Siegfried, Terrence A. Spencer, W. D. Hutchinson

Two candidate diagnostic concentrations of the Cry1Ab and Cry1Ac toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis corresponding to the LC99 and EC99 (effective concentration that causes 99% growth inhibition) for European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner), were determined based on previously obtained baseline data. Validation experiments using field-collected European corn borer populations from across North America showed that for Cry1Ab, a concentration corresponding to the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval of the LC99, produced mortality .99% for all populations tested. A Taxonomic Evaluation Of The Comatulid Genus Stephanometra (Echinodermata:Crinoidea), Dana Lin Rankin

Several genera in the comatulid family Mariametridae are currently ambiguously distinguished on the basis of variations in length and robustness of oral pinnules. Previous descriptions have suggested that at least the genera Stephanometra and Lamprometra are imperfectly distinguishable. A detailed re-examination of morphology coupled with principal component analyses of morphometric data and cladistic analyses provide support for a monophyletic Stephanometra distinct from Lamprometra. A preliminary morphological analysis suggests that Dichrometra and Liparometra should be synonymized with Lamprometra. The six currently recognized species of Stephanometra uniquely share at least one pair of oral pinnules characterized by enlarged size, reduced ambulacral groove …

The social structure of an Old World tent-making bat Cynopterus sphinx (Megachiroptera), was investigated in western India. A combination of census and mark–recapture data over 2 years (1996–98) was used to infer the form of the mating system, compositional stability of social groups and mode of new social group formation. The breeding population of C. sphinx was subdivided into diurnal roosting colonies, each of which contained one to five discrete roosting groups and often one or more solitary bats in adjacent roosts. Past-Dependency, Pragmatism, And Critique Of History In Adjudication And Legal Scholarship, Richard A. Posner

University of Chicago Law Review

Using Nietzsche's great essay on the uses and disadvantages of history for life as his jumping-off point, Judge Posner examines the utility of the study of history for adjudication and legal scholarship. He argues, following Nietzsche, that the wrong kind of historical study can be very bad for "life," including law, while the right kind -- the kind deployed by a pragmatic judge or a policy-oriented legal scholar -- may deviate from literal accuracy in the direction of a rhetorical and imaginative narrative of historical events that can be constructively employed in a forward-looking approach to legal problems.

Drag = Blackface, Kelly Kleiman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Performance in drag is indistinguishable conceptually from performance in blackface, yet the former is embraced while the latter is shunned. This Essay argues that the analogy is powerful enough to justify making drag performance anathema. It outlines the parallel features of the two modes of performance and then rebuts the com- mon defenses of drag performance-that drag subverts gender stereotypes, that it is a matter of private sexual compulsion, that it is a privileged activity of gay men, and that it's just a joke.

Pretrial Mediation Of Complex Scientific Cases: A Proposal To Reduce Jury And Judicial Confusion, Susan E. Cowell

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Note proposes pretrial mediation using scientist-mediators for complex scientific disputes. Complex scientific disputes reflect the inherent tension between law and science. This tension results in dissatisfaction among judges, juries, and scientists because of the uncertainties embraced by science, but eschewed by law. Pretrial mediation would address some of these uncertainties before they are introduced into the courtroom. In short, the proposed pretrial mediation should reduce jury confusion and provide judges with guidance to assess the admissibility of scientific evidence and expert opinions by eliminating and clarifying scientific issues.

Before It's Too Late: Neuropsychological Consequences Of Child Neglect And Their Implications For Law And Social Policy, Janet Weinstein, Ricardo Weinstein

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Recent developments in the neurosciences have led to dramatic breakthroughs in the area of brain development and the understanding of consequences of neglect. Because this process was heretofore not understood, legislators have been wary of drafting child protection statutes that afforded the possibility for arbitrary interference with families. Strict statutory standards have been adopted that allow coercive intervention only in cases where the child is at substantial risk of imminent physical harm, or after some of the most severe consequences of neglect have been identified. Advanced Placement Science Programs In Catholic High School, Daniel D. Schinzel

The purpose of this study was to examine Advanced Placement (AP) science programs in participating Catholic high schools and develop guidelines for the implementation of similar programs at other Catholic schools. The areas of interest were curriculum, instruction, and Advanced Placement examination results. Administrators and teachers at Catholic high schools with Advanced Placement science programs were surveyed using instruments developed by the researcher. The responses of AP teachers and administrators were analyzed and compared in order to determine important features of existing science programs.
