From June 1998 to July 1999, the dynamics of the plankton in Hagg Lake and Barney Reservoir were studied with the purpose to identify the succession dynamics of the planktonic species, to test the Plankton Ecology Group (PEG) model, and to explore the relationships between these successions and the physical and chemical variables.

Rescaling The Energy Function In Hopfield Networks, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng

In this paper we propose an approach that rescales the distance matrix of the energy function in the Hopfield network for solving optimization problems. We rescale the distance matrix by normalizing each row in the matrix and then adjusting the parameter for the distance term. This scheme has the capability of reducing the effects of clustering in data distributions, which is one of main reasons for the formation of invalid solutions. We evaluate this approach through a large number (20,000) simulations based on 200 randomly generated city distributions of the 10-city traveling salesman problem. Risk And Resilience Factors Linked To Problem Behavior Among Urban Culturally Diverse Adolescents, Stephanie L. Crosby

This study examined several risk and resilience factors associated with sexual intercourse, gang involvement, and alcohol and drug use among 332 urban culturally diverse adolescents aged 12-16 years. In general different patterns of risk and resilience factors were found to predict the three problem behaviors. Delinquency was the only factor that was significantly linked to sexual intercourse, gang involvement, and substance use.

Discriminant analyses supported that delinquency was differentially associated with low problem vs. high problem urban adolescents. In addition when compared to the high problem urban youth the resilient youth tended to have higher academic competence and intact two …

Green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) communities are valuable as sources of biological diversity and shelter for livestock in the Northern Great Plains. Excessive use of stands by livestock tends to convert these woodland communities to less valuable shrublands. We monitored 12 green ash stands in Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) from 1985 through 1996 to determine changes in species composition, plant density, and canopy coverage in green ash communities that were protected from livestock but exposed to foraging by native ungulates. Proper riparian management can provide numerous environmental, social, and economic benefits. At the USDA National Agroforestry Center, we are tailoring the land-use planning process to facilitate riparian management in the Western Corn Belt ecoregion for multiple benefits. This planning framework integrates regional, landscape and site scale planning approaches into a unified framework. In this framework, regional and landscape-scale public issues are addressed along with site-scale landowner objectives to facilitate balanced management plans providing broad mutual benefits. Panic disorder has been associated with pervasive social and health consequences similar to or greater than those associated with major depression. Studies have been found that support findings concerning diminished quality of life for persons currently being treated, or shortly after treatment for anxiety disorders, but little is said in regards to quality of life (QOL) in years that follow treatment. This research project attempts to ascertain if there is a difference between the findings of previous studies with this more recent examination of QOL in panic disorder patients.
