Single Channel Properties And Regulated Expression Of Ca2+ Release-Activated Ca2+ (Crac) Channels In Human T Cells, Alla F. Fomina, Christopher M. Fanger, J. Ashot Kozak, Michael D. Cahalan

Although the crucial role of Ca²⁺ influx in lymphocyte activation has been well documented, little is known about the properties or expression levels of Ca²⁺ channels in normal human T lymphocytes. The use of Na⁺ as the permeant ion in divalent-free solution permitted Ca²⁺ release-activated Ca²⁺ (CRAC) channel activation, kinetic properties, and functional expression levels to be investigated with single channel resolution in resting and phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-activated human T cells. Passive Ca²⁺ store depletion resulted in the opening of 41-pS CRAC channels characterized by high open probabilities, voltage-dependent block by extracellular Ca²⁺ in …

We used an airborne Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (AFTIR), coupled to a flow-through, air-sampling cell, on a King Air B-90 to make in situ trace gas measurements in isolated smoke plumes from four, large, boreal zone wildfires in interior Alaska during June 1997. AFTIR spectra acquired near the source of the smoke plumes yielded excess mixing ratios for 13 of the most common trace gases: water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, nitric oxide, formaldehyde, acetic acid, formic acid, methanol, ethylene, acetylene, ammonia and hydrogen cyanide. Durophagy In Sharks: Feeding Mechanics Of The Hammerhead Sphyrna Tiburo, Cheryl D. Wilga, Philip J. Motta

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

This study investigates the motor pattern and head movements during feeding of a durophagus shark, the bonnethead Sphyrna tiburo, using electromyography and simultaneous high-speed video. Sphyrna tiburo feeds almost exclusively on hard-shelled crabs, with shrimp and fish taken occasionally. It captures crabs by ram feeding, then processes or reduces the prey by crushing it between molariform teeth, finally transporting the prey by suction for swallowing. The prey-crushing mechanism is distinct from that of ram or bite capture and suction transport. This crushing mechanism is accomplished by altering the duration of jaw adductor muscle activity and modifying jaw kinematics by …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

EPA and USDA NRSC have stated that the most effective way for animal feeding operations (AFO's) to minimize water quality and public health risks is to develop and implement comprehensive nutrient management plans. In response a proposed CNMP workbook has been designed to serve as an animal operation's environmental operating plan. This project will initiate field testing of the proposed Nebraska CNMP with livestock producers and advisors. It will also assist with development of supporting resources and training for educational and technical advisors.
