The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

This article formalizes the taxonomic conclusions of the senior author’s 1975 successful doctorate dissertation. The nine new species defined in that 1975 dissertation are here formally described in compliance with the rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). The authors have essentially abstracted the original 447 page dissertation and designated types. The new Lacinipolia species are: delongi, aileenae, triplehorni, bucketti, baueri, sharonae, martini, fordi, and franclemonti. The purpose of this paper is simply to make these names available to the scientific community and professional researchers by making them ICZN-compliant.

Records For The Utilization Of Prunus As A Larval Foodplant By 71 Species Of Lepidoptera In Northeast California, Laurence L. Crabtree, Ron Leuschner

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Twenty-six sites in five northeastern California counties (Shasta, Modoc, Plumas, Lassen, Tehama) were surveyed from 1991 to 1999 for the presence of lepidopteran larvae on naturally occurring shrubs of the genus Prunus. To date, a total of seventy-one species of Lepidoptera from seventeen families have been documented to utilize one or more of the area’s three Prunus species (P. emarginata, P. subcordata, and P. virginiana var. demissa).

D13c Signatures Of Flora, Macrofauna And Sediment Of A Mangrove Forest Partly Affected By Sewage Wastes, J F Machiwa

Stable carbon isotope ratios (d13C) of sediments, suspended particulate matter, and crab gut content from Maruhubi mangrove forest, Zanzibar, were determined. Stable carbon isotope ratios were used to determine sources of organic matter in the forest. Mangrove organic carbon (d13C±SD = - 27.97±0.25) was found to be an important component of the sediment organic matter except at the marine fringe zone (d13C±SD = - 17.26±0.83). The areal distribution of d13C values show that the marine fringe zone was rich in organic carbon of marine origin. Heavy Metals And Organic Pollutants In Sediments Of Dar Es Salaam Harbour Prior To Dredging In 1999, J F Machiwa

Heavy metals and organic contaminants were analysed in the sediments of the inner area of the Dar es Salaam harbour. Complementary analytical parameters, such as, the organic carbon content and the silt/clay fraction of the sediments showed good positive correlation (r = 0.64). Stations that had high content of fine grain material in the sediment also indicated relatively high level of organic carbon and pollutants. The Florida criteria (MacDonald 1993) for assessment of pollution of tropical marine sediments was adopted in oredr to evaluate the extent of pollution in Dar es Salaam harbour sediments. Influence Of Endocrine Activity On Larval Development In Busseola Fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera:Noctudine), M Njau

The present study investigated the role of juvenile and moulting hormones in development of Busseola fusca. Morphometric measurements were used to distinguish differences in endocrine activity between non-diapause and diapause development with regard to the prothoracic glands and the corpora allata. The corpora allata of non-diapause larvae were similar in size to those of diapause larvae. The critical period for the prothoracic glands to produce the required titer of ecdysone for further development was by the third day after ecdysis to the last larval instar. Composition And Anaerobic Digestion Of Single And Combined Organic Fractions Of Municipal Solid Waste Of Dar Es Salaam, A K Kivaisi, J Mukisa

The composition of major categories of municipal solid waste (MSW) of Dar es salaam city was determined. Food remains and vegetable matter constituted 80-90% of the categories. Organic fractions of the individual categories contained 18-20 % total solid (TS), 30-50 % (dry weight) total fibre and 1-1.3 % nitrogen. The assorted organic fractions were tested for anaerobic conversion into biogas at 55°C in batch cultures for 14 days with a mixed population of microorganisms. Adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity is decreased in patients with poorly controlled diabetes, and this contributes to the dyslipidemia of diabetes. To study the mechanism of this decrease in LPL, we studied adipose tissue LPL expression in male rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Heparin releasable and extractable LPL activity in the epididymal fat decreased by 75-80% in the diabetic group and treatment of the rats with insulin prior to sacrifice reversed this effect. Northern blot analysis indicated no corresponding change in LPL mRNA levels. However, LPL synthetic rate, measured using [³⁵S]methionine pulse labeling, was decreased by 75% in …

According to the National Vital Statistics Report (1998), Black women age 45-64 are ten times more likely than white women of the same age to die from diseases of the heart. They are five times more likely to die from diabetes. The goal of this study was to examine how articles published in leading medical journals between 1989 and 1998 accounted for such differences in health outcomes among Black and white women.

The explanatory content of the articles was analyzed and coded according to four types of attributions: genetic/biological, cultural/behavioral, structural/socioeconomic and alternative. Each type of explanation derives from different …

A macrocyclic glycopeptide, ristocetin A, was used as chiral stationary phase for the high-performance liquid chromatographic separation of enantiomers of 28 unnatural amino acids, such as analogues of phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan, and analogues containing 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline, tetraline or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-carboline skeletons. Excellent resolutions were achieved for most of the investigated compounds by using reversed-phase or a new polar-organic mobile phase system. The conditions of separation were optimized by variation of the mobile phase composition, temperature and flowrate. Copyright (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

Federal Legislation: Colorado Ute Indian Water Rights Settlement Act Amendments of 2000 in Consolidated Appropriations Act of Dec. 21, 2001 (PL 106-554, Appendix D, Title III, 114 Stat. 2763A-258 ). The timetable set forth in the Settlement Agreement has not been met. The irrigation water provisions cannot be met due to Endangered Species Act, biological opinions and Federal Water Pollution Control Act requirements which reduce the amount that can be drawn from the Animas and La Plata Rivers. The facilities and amount of water must be significantly reduced. To compensate the Tribes, capital costs are waived and funds for natural …

The 78,000-ha Savannah River Site, which is located in the upper Coastal Plain of South Carolina along the Savannah River, was established as a nuclear production facility in 1951 by the Atomic Energy Commission. The site’s physical and vegetative characteristics, land use history, and the impacts of management and operations are described. Aboriginal and early European settlement was primarily along streams, where much of the farming and timber cutting have occurred. Woodland grazing occurred in the uplands and lowlands. Land use intensity increased after the Civil War and peaked in the 1920s. Impacts from production of cotton and corn, naval …
