Embracing Civic Responsibility, Judith Ramaley
Embracing Civic Responsibility, Judith Ramaley
Higher Education
In the past year, there have been several calls for colleges and universities to take up their responsibilities as members of society in order to model the civic virtues and to become instruments of a working democracy. It is becoming clear that a genuine democracy is also a learning society and that good citizenship requires the capacity to form a learning community with others.

Back To The Garden: The Redemptive Promise Of Sustainable Forestry, 1893-2000, Char Miller
Back To The Garden: The Redemptive Promise Of Sustainable Forestry, 1893-2000, Char Miller
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
As we struggle at the turn of the century to define and implement “sustainable forestry”— the next stage in the evolution of forest management in North America and the world—it is important to realize that its components have strong roots in the forestry profession. This article examines the relationship of forests and forestry with social equity issues during the last century. In the end, the author leaves us with a question: can sustainable forestry as we understand it today lead to conflict resolution? If not, what lies beyond sustainable forestry?

Transit-Oriented Development In The Inner City: A Delphi Survey, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris
Transit-Oriented Development In The Inner City: A Delphi Survey, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris
Journal of Public Transportation
This study presents the results of a three-round Delphi survey that focused on issues and opportunities related to transit-oriented development (TOD) in U.S. inner cities. The survey queried a panel of 25 experts about the various goals and objectives of the practice of TOD, as well as the preconditions and constraints surrounding such development in economically disadvantaged areas of the inner city. Starting from a wide range of responses, the panel was eventually able, through the Delphi process, to focus on specific issues and propose a concrete set of strategies for the implementation of TODs.

Comparable Worth: Pay Equity And Women Of Color, Elizabeth A. Sherman
Comparable Worth: Pay Equity And Women Of Color, Elizabeth A. Sherman
Trotter Review
The relationship between women of color and community economic development is fundamentally a question of income. And, for women, questions of income more often than not become questions of pay equity - whether or not women and men are receiving equal pay for equal, or comparable work. Because the economy retains entrenched vestiges of sexual discrimination, the solutions to such problems lie within the political realm, where laws to ensure equality are created and enforced. In this regard, women themselves have a vital role to play as activists focusing on mitigating the barriers to opportunity that have depressed women's well …
The Destructive Role Of Land Use Planning, Andrew P. Morriss, Roger E. Meiners
The Destructive Role Of Land Use Planning, Andrew P. Morriss, Roger E. Meiners
Faculty Scholarship
Is land use planning fundamentally different from other forms of central planning? If so, does that difference suggest that land use planning will succeed where other forms of central planning failed? We conclude that land use planning is not fundamentally different from other forms of economic central planning. Further, the working of the market economy, and the long-term success of America's economy, is intertwined in the clear and certain rights and responsibilities generated by the common law of property. The complexity of the modem world does not diminish the need for private property; indeed, it strengthens its imperative. Returning to …

Race, Space And Place: The Internal Critique Of The Empowerment Zones Program, Audrey Mcfarlane
All Faculty Scholarship
This Article examines the extent to which the Empowerment Zones Program is properly viewed as a neutral, rational, and beneficial program for poor, inner-city communities and their residents by exploring the limits and potential of its chief mechanism, economic development, as a tool to achieve social justice for the inner cities. This Article grounds its exploration within the contested terrain of the city, not simply as a legal or juridical concept, but in terms of its reality as a lived place on the eve of the 21st century.
The Factors That Influence Psychological Sense Of Community For Students Living On Campus At Edith Cowan University, Colleen Dalton
The Factors That Influence Psychological Sense Of Community For Students Living On Campus At Edith Cowan University, Colleen Dalton
Theses : Honours
A psychological sense of community (PSOC) has been found to facilitate adjustment and well-being. However, little research has been conducted in Australian universities. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the phenomena, a qualitative approach was adopted. This research explored PSOC from the participants' perspective using McMillan and Chavis's (1986) theoretical framework as a guide and investigated the following research questions. (1) What is the residential students' perception of PSOC, at Edith Cowan University (ECU)? (2) What factors, within the student village, facilitate and inhibit PSOC? (3) What factors within the university setting and beyond, in the wider community, …
