Oasis Or Mirage: The Farming Of Black Pearl In The Northern Cook Islands, Cluny Macpherson
Oasis Or Mirage: The Farming Of Black Pearl In The Northern Cook Islands, Cluny Macpherson
Pacific Studies
By the late twentieth century, small island states in the Pacific faced severe problems resulting from the ways in which they had become integrated into the world capitalist economy since the early nineteenth century. Generic environmental, economic, and social problems follow from dependence on the production of a relatively small number of crops for sale in the world economy, out-migration and remittances, and foreign aid. Most states have sought to reduce their dependence and to move toward greater degrees of economic self-sufficiency. In the case of atolls, opportunities for development are typically regarded as minimal because of fragile ecosystems and …

Cognition Within And Between Organizations Edited By James R Meindl, Charles Stubbart, And Joseph F Parae, Thousand Oaks, Ca Liforn Ia, Sage Publication S, 1996, Pp 528, Price: $69.95 (Cloth), $32.95 (Paper)., K Unnikrishnan Nair
IIMB Management Review
For a researcher, teacher, student or any other person interested in managerial and organisational cognition, this book presents a single window interface with the articles that appeared in Organization Science between 1991 and '94. In particular, the researcher will be thrilled to encounter a rich variety of research methodologies in the book. Teachers of advanced courses on MOC could use this book as one of the anchors in their courses. Hence, it is a must for libraries in all management schools, and universities with departments of psychology, social psychology and cognitive psychology and perhaps sociology, especially the ones with explicit …
Making A Difference: Human Service Interest Group Influence On Social Welfare Program Regulations, Richard Hoefer
Making A Difference: Human Service Interest Group Influence On Social Welfare Program Regulations, Richard Hoefer
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Social workers increasingly understand the importance of political action to affect legislative policy-making. This paper sheds light onto the unexplored subject of interest group influence on the executive branch, specifically on the writing of program regulations for social welfare programs. It describes groups active in the process and what they do in their quest for influence. It also presents a preliminary model of interest group influence on regulation writing. Results show that having greater access, articulating a liberal policy position, choosing a "better" strategy and devoting more resources to influence efforts are all significant predictors of a group's influence level …
Race, Class, And Support For Egalitarian Statism Among The African American Middle Class, George Wilson
Race, Class, And Support For Egalitarian Statism Among The African American Middle Class, George Wilson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This study uses data from the 1990 and 1987 years of the General Social Survey to assess the effects of minority status and position in the class structure in explaining middle class African Americans' support for opportunity-enhancing and outcome-based egalitarian statist policies. Findings do not provide confirmation for prior research that has found that racial effects are predominant, but has considered a more narrow range of policies and not assessed interaction effects. First, neither additive nor interactive effects of race and social class explain support for government policies that are premised on providing people with skills to compete in the …

Agriculture In Nebraska: Perceptions On Policy Alternatives, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Sam Cordes
Agriculture In Nebraska: Perceptions On Policy Alternatives, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Sam Cordes
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
Agriculture in Nebraska has been changing dramatically during the past few decades. In the 1999 Nebraska Rural Poll, rural Nebraskans were asked what they would prefer to see for Nebraska’s agriculture in the next 20 years. The majority of the respondents indicated they would prefer to see a family farm ownership structure in contrast to a non-family corporate ownership structure. Yet, less than one-third expect to see that occur in the future. Given that, what types of agricultural policy options or development strategies do rural Nebraskans believe would be effective in reaching the objective of a strong traditional family farm …
Organizations Evolving By Howard A Ldri Ch, Sage Pub Lications, London, 1999, Pp Xv + 413, Price:£ 55.00 (Cloth), £ 17.99 (Paper)., Ishwar Dayal
IIMB Management Review
The book examines processes by which organisations come into being and achieve coherence as entities. It also discusses the issues surrounding organisational transformation and change. The understanding of these sociopsychological processes is necessary to enable managers to look at organisations as 'living' entities, to understand, maintain and develop organisations, and to manage change.
E-Profit-High Payoff Strategies For Capturing Theecommerce Edge By Peter S Cohan, Amaconamerican Management Association, 2000, Pp 285, Price: $27.95., Suparna Mitra
IIMB Management Review
In a business environment charged with daily sensational stories about E-commerce, this book by Peter S Cohan goes back to the basics. It cuts through the hype of the cutting edge companies selling millions of dollars on the Internet, and focuses on the
basic management principles that should guide companies through this revolution sweeping our world. Put very simply, this book tells practicing managers how to integrate the 'E' part into their existing businesses for maximum results and with minimum pain.

Listening To Students: Voices From The Inner City, Rita M. Bean, R. Tont Eichelberger, Meryl Lazar, Gregory A. Morris, Cindy A. Reed
Journal of Catholic Education
What do students in Catholic schools view as important aspects of their unique form of education? They want a safe environment for learning, caring and concerned teachers, high expectations for learning, responsibility and respect in the school community, and a clear sense of how school relates to success in life. This article describes a study which clearly documents student perceptions and values.
