The Digital Divide: Some Reflections, Stephen Paul Foster Ph.D. Jan 2000

The Digital Divide: Some Reflections, Stephen Paul Foster Ph.D.

University Libraries' Staff Publications

One of the many remarkable impacts of the Internet on our social lives has been its shaping of our language. A spontaneously evolving Internet-argot has relentlessly and conspicuously intruded itself into everyday life. The activities and circumstances of a people "on-line" are now described by an array of powerful and colorful metaphors that capture the spirit of a new, robust technology. We find ourselves often conversing casually and unselfconsciously in an idiom that would have been incomprehensible only a few short years ago. We do, indeed, talk differently now.

One Internet-spawned expression that seems to have achieved common linguistic currency …

Globalisation: Its Philosophical And Sociological Presuppositions, M.H.S. Abdul Murad

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This article discusses the relationship between modernisation, industrialisation, and globalisation. Globalisation is viewed as a consequence of modernisation, where modernisation is construed in both physical and intellectual terms. The intellectual and philosophical foundations of modernity is then explicated with reference to three major movements of thoughts in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century, namely the Enlightenment, Hegelianism, and Logical Positivism. The article shows that a common thread running through these movements of thought was their emphasis on Rationality and Science, and how this has a levelling effects towards cultural convergence. The final part of the article looks at recent developments …

Rethinking The Place Of The Practicum In Teacher Education., Ralph Blunden Jan 2000

Rethinking The Place Of The Practicum In Teacher Education., Ralph Blunden

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper draws on the author’s 25 years of experience in teacher education and on a number of course evaluation questionnaires administered over the last three years to students in the one-year full time Graduate Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (and its predecessors) at the University of Melbourne. It is argued that the bifurcation between practice and theory (and theory and practice), between teaching and training experience and thinking about such experience within theoretical frameworks is a division that should be sequentially organised rather than concurrent as in most initial teacher education programs. It is claimed that data from …

Youth Work In Ireland: The Struggle For Identity, Hilary Jenkinson Jan 2000

Youth Work In Ireland: The Struggle For Identity, Hilary Jenkinson

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper discusses the struggle the youth work sector in Ireland has experienced in forming a conceptual and practicebased identity . Youth work in the Irish context is a relatively new discipline both in theoretical and practical terms and its development on the ground has been severely hindered by "the erratIc and fitful evolution of policies .. .insecure employment conditions, inadequate resources and a constant search for funding from a bewildering array of sources" (Gilligan 1991 p.89). This article outlines some central principles that are fundamental to youth work practice, and identifies practice contexts which adhere to these tenets. The …

Single Pregnant Women's Encounters In Public: Changing Norms Or Performing Roles, Abbey Hyde Jan 2000

Single Pregnant Women's Encounters In Public: Changing Norms Or Performing Roles, Abbey Hyde

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper presents data on single pregnant women's encounters in public in an Irish context. Data were collected using in-depth interviews, which were analysed using a grounded theory strategy. The study was conducted in Dublin City and 51 unmarried women whose ages ranged from 16-36 participated. Findings suggested that while dominant public discourses on non-marital childbearing within the culture were negative (albeit challenged) at the time data were being collected, responses from others whom participants interacted with in verbal face-to-face encounters in public were generally (though certainly not exclusively) experienced as positive in tone. An attempt is made to explain …

Early Childhood Care And Education In Ireland And The Challenge To Educational Disadvantage, Jackie O'Toole Jan 2000

Early Childhood Care And Education In Ireland And The Challenge To Educational Disadvantage, Jackie O'Toole

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Acknowledging the common assumption locating the impact of education in its role to act as a mediator between origins and destinations, this paper examines Early Childhood Care and Education [ECCE], particularly the role state provided, compensatory education plays in challenging educational disadvantage. Initially operationalisation is made of the key concepts of ECCE, equality of opportunity and educational disadvantage. I then move to briefly describe the historical development of ECCE and compensatory education. Three state provided compensatory education programmes are identified: Rutland Street Project, Breaking the Cycle and Early Start. I conclude by outlining the significant impact early interventions can have …

Time, Space And Presences: Bangladeshi Girls' Friendships In An English Primary School, James G. Deegan Jan 2000

Time, Space And Presences: Bangladeshi Girls' Friendships In An English Primary School, James G. Deegan

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The study reported here examined what it is like to be and have friends and how developing conceptions of friendships become embedded in children's peer cultures. It took place in two mixed Year 5 and Year 6 classes in a Church of England Local Education Authority Aided (C of E 'N) primary school in a working-class neighbourhood in a university town in East Anglia, England. A conceptually-split core theme emerged. The core theme is children's enabling and constraining negotiation of friendships and ethnicity within their own tacitly agreed upon boundaries of absences and presences, space and time, and locale. Implications …

International student–athletes adjusted to college as well as students and student–athletes from the United States. Results should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size. The effects of gender and ethnicity on adjustment to college were also examined.
