[Review Of] Adelaida Reyes. Songs Of The Caged, Songs Of The Free: Music And The Vietnamese Refugee Experience, Deborah Wong Jan 2000

[Review Of] Adelaida Reyes. Songs Of The Caged, Songs Of The Free: Music And The Vietnamese Refugee Experience, Deborah Wong

Ethnic Studies Review

This important book documents two areas, the history of the Vietnamese traumatic emigration to the U.S. from 1975 to the early 1990s and the central role of music in Vietnamese responses to diaspora. Because ethnographic studies of the Vietnamese diaspora are still limited in number, and this is the first focused on Vietnamese expressive practices, Songs of the Caged is a major contribution on both fronts. Unlike many accounts of the Vietnamese American experience, Reyes' book is based on extended field research and addresses big issues with attention to history and to real people in real situations often conveyed through …

[Review Of] George J. Leonard (Ed.). The Asian Pacific Heritage: A Companion To Literature And The Arts, Jeff Partridge

Ethnic Studies Review

In this large volume of essays, general editor George J. Leonard aims to produce a "tool kit" for the multicultural classroom that will "unlock the greatest number of (Asian-Pacific American-APA) authors and artists" (xiv) for students and teachers. In many ways he hits the mark. Readers who once skipped over the Chinese phrases in Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club can now find them explained in Molly H. Isham's "Reader's Guide" to the novel. Those who want to know the meaning of "no-no boys" or "FOBs," or "Mestizos" or the date when the "Queue Ordinance" was passed can find them …

White Ethnic: A Social Concept, Joseph M. Conforti Jan 2000

White Ethnic: A Social Concept, Joseph M. Conforti

Ethnic Studies Review

Why such a term as white ethnic or ethnic developed and what purposes it served guides this inquiry. Its origins in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement in a context of American immigration history are explored together with its adoption as a sociological concept. A survey of textbooks most likely to use such a term, particularly texts concerning race and ethnicity, intergroup relations, and sociology of minorities, together with related literature illustrates both its usage and the basis of such usage.

[Review Of] Wendy S. Hesford. Framing Identities: Autobiography And The Politics Of Pedagogy, Helen Lock

Ethnic Studies Review

Drawing on her experiences as a teacher of writing for six years at Oberlin College, Wendy S. [Review Of] Eric Wertheimer. Imagined Empires: Incas, Aztecs, And The New World Of American Literature, David Carey Jr Jan 2000

[Review Of] Eric Wertheimer. Imagined Empires: Incas, Aztecs, And The New World Of American Literature, David Carey Jr

Ethnic Studies Review

Eric Wertheimer convincingly argues that inaccuracy and omission in historical narratives made an indelible mark on American identity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The ethnic diversity of America, even though sparingly portrayed in the historical writing of the time, also had an important effect on American identity. Wertheimer concludes that while American identity has a public concept, individuals determine the real meaning in private spheres. He examines five Anglo, male authors (Philip Freneau, Joel Barlow, William Prescott, Herman Melville, and Walt Whitman) to ascertain what they thought of as American history and who should be represented in it. These …

Patchwork And Pr: Seminole-Constructed Public Image, Cynthia Kasee Jan 2000

Patchwork And Pr: Seminole-Constructed Public Image, Cynthia Kasee

Ethnic Studies Review

Florida Seminoles represent a unique "response culture" among Southeastern Native Americans. An amalgamation of tribes, their history has been marked by their adaptability in the face of massive cultural change. Today the Seminoles are a major force in Florida's economy and politics. The public face they present has largely been of their own making throughout their history, and now it is more consciously so.

[Review Of] Sandra Jackson And Jose Solis Jordan (Eds.). I'Ve Got A Story To Tell: Identity And Place In The Academy, James Adolph Robinson

Ethnic Studies Review

The Heavy Burden Of The State: Revisiting The History Of Labor Law In The Interwar Period, Christopher L. Tomlins

Seattle University Law Review

This Article reflects on possible conclusions to be drawn from this symposium. The article concludes that individually, these authors have demonstrated the returns to be gained by pushing labor law history into new empirical and conceptual areas. Collectively, however, their achievement is somewhat different, for collectively they recommend that we revisit what is ostensibly familiar to us.

Dissertations

The researcher conducted an historical case study of the Garfield High School Pregnant Minor Program (1975–1999) which is one of three pregnant minor programs in the San Diego Unified School District. The primary purpose of this study was to provide data about the history and background of this program which may be significant to the decision makers who develop policies regarding pregnant minor programs in the district. The second purpose of the study was to provide data which may be helpful to community members, educators, policy makers, and student-parents about the issues and problems faced by students-parents which would, hopefully, …

Ethical Issues In Dementia, Peter J. Whitehouse Jan 2000

Ethical Issues In Dementia, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

The growing number of individuals affected by dementia will intensify the ethical issues that emerge in clinical practice and research, issues early in disease relate to genetic testing, use of medications in mildly affected persons, and diagnostic disclosure. Research issues relate to appropriate informed consent processes, conflict of interests, and research design issues, such as the use of placebos and the use of biological tissues. In the later stages of disease concern about appropriate therapeutic goals and end-of-life care is appropriate.
