Theses Digitization Project

The parenting style, level of acculturation and incidence of stress, were explored in order to identify the likelihood of intervention by child protective services to prevent child abuse. The Approaching Death Of The Collective Right Theory Of The Second Amendment, Roger I. Roots Jan 2000

The Approaching Death Of The Collective Right Theory Of The Second Amendment, Roger I. Roots

Duquesne Law Review

The notion that the Second Amendment right to bear arms is a collective rather than an individual right has persisted even though it has been buried by scholarly criticism. The author predicts that the collective right theory will finally collapse under the pressure of this scholarly criticism and the historical evidence that such a theory was not contemplated by the Founders when the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were created. According to the author, the federal district court decision in United States v. Emerson may be the impetus for this impending demise.

Crime, Punishment, And Romero: An Analysis Of The Case Against California's Three Strikes Law, Brian P. Janiskee, Edward J. Erler Jan 2000

Crime, Punishment, And Romero: An Analysis Of The Case Against California's Three Strikes Law, Brian P. Janiskee, Edward J. Erler

Duquesne Law Review

In a well-received study, Crime and Punishment in California: The Impact of Three Strikes and You're Out, Franklin E. Zimring, Sam Kamin, and Gordon Hawkins assert that California's Three Strikes law has failed to deter crime. The authors submit that the study has not provided sufficient statistical evidence to prove that Three Strikes does not deter crime. The authors argue that the statistical methodology employed in the study was flawed, and that this flaw created a distorted view of the deterrent effect of Three Strikes. The authors do not attempt to demonstrate that Three Strikes deters crime; however, they …

The Gettysburg Battlefield, One Century Ago, Benjamin Y. Dixon

Adams County History

In the fall of 1899, Colonel John Nicholson reported on the recent changes being made to the Gettysburg National Military park. The park held a dedication ceremony that July for a new equestrian statue to General John Reynolds erected northwest of town. It was a shiny goldenbrown, polished-bronze statue sculpted by Henry Kirke Bush-Brown (his second equestrian statue at Gettysburg in three years). The horse and rider, balancing on two legs stood on a large pedestal near the new avenue in his name. Reynolds Avenue and adjoining Wadsworth, Doubleday, and Robinson Avenues were new to the battlefield as well. These …

The Racialization Of Sexuality: The Queer Case Of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ian Barnard Jan 2000

The Racialization Of Sexuality: The Queer Case Of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In this article I read media and subcultural representations of Jeffrey Dahmer, the white male U.S. serial killer who gained notoriety in the late 1980s for having sex with and then murdering and dismembering men of color in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My aim is to show the extent to which the degree of Dahmer's homosexualization in a particular representation determines Dahmer' s thinking and actions in the sphere of race, and to suggest how spiraling efforts to separate race from sexuality in the Dahmer case only further intricate the two analytic axes."

Review Of The Book A Patchwork Shawl: Chronicles Of South Asian Women In America, Anjali Ram Jan 2000

Review Of The Book A Patchwork Shawl: Chronicles Of South Asian Women In America, Anjali Ram

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Ever since western feminist scholarship was accused of defining gender in transhistorical and transcultural ways, there have been attempts to add the category, `woman of colour’, in feminist enterprises that rang e from the academic to the administrative. Such toke n gestures inevitably re-inscribe the problem by glossing over distinctive material histories and the particularity of women’s experiences and struggles. For those of us who refuse such additive, tokenist approaches, A Patchwork Shawl edited by Shamita Das Dasgupta is a welcome contribution. Written by South Asian immigrant and first generation women, A Patchwork Shawlis, to us e Dasgupta’s words, `a …

Management Intensive Rotational Grazingin Wisconsin: The 1990s, M. Ostrom, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith Jan 2000

Management Intensive Rotational Grazingin Wisconsin: The 1990s, M. Ostrom, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Growing numbers of Wisconsin dairy farmers have reported success using management intensive rotational grazing (MIRG) techniques that rely on pastures as the primary source of forage for their milking herds. The Program on Agricultural Technology Studies (PATS) has been tracking the use and performance of MIRG systems in Wisconsin since the early 1990s through periodic large-scale, random sample surveys of Wisconsin dairy farmers. This fact sheet incorporates recent results from PATS 1999 Dairy Farmer Poll into an overall summary of PATS grazing research.

Limitations Of Agricultural Land Useplanning Tools In Rural Wisconsin, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, J. Bukovac Jan 2000

Limitations Of Agricultural Land Useplanning Tools In Rural Wisconsin, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, J. Bukovac

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Recent opinion polls suggest that farmland preservation is one of the most widely shared goals for local land use planning in Wisconsin. Although the state has long been a leader in the use of tax and zoning policy tools to protect agricultural lands from residential or commercial development, continued high rates of farmland loss have cast doubt on their effectiveness. This paper critically examines statistical evidence for the effectiveness of farmland tax credit and exclusive agricultural zoning policies in Wisconsin. Using data collected at the township level (the local unit of land use decision-making in most counties), and controlling for …
