Excerpt From Wrestling With Rustin, Or The Left Will Rise Again, Maybe, John D'Emilio
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
Four years ago, CLAGS sponsored a conference on the state of gay and lesbian history. I was one of several presenters in a session on biography. None of us on the panel had consulted beforehand. But by the beginning of the third or fourth presentation, a common pattern had emerged, and the audience erupted with laughter. Each one of us had opened our remarks with a mixture of apology and denial: we each were not, we assured the audience, writing a biography!

Comedy, Foppery, Camp: Moreto’S El Lindo Don Diego, Matthew D. Stroud
Comedy, Foppery, Camp: Moreto’S El Lindo Don Diego, Matthew D. Stroud
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
In 1990, Francisco Portes brought his Teatro Pequeño to the Chamizal in El Paso and gave the audience his usual high quality performance of Moreto' s El Iindo don Diego. Those who attended the performance or have seen it on videotape know that Portes' s portrayal of Diego was nothing less than magisterial. He minces, he scolds, he blusters, he fusses, completely obsessed with his appearance and his affect on others. Don Diego's entry scene established his character and the comic tone for the entire play. In it, Diego converses with a very straight-laced foil, Don Mendo, a much …

Publishing Patterns In Specialist Accounting History Journals In The English Language, 1996-1999, Garry D. Carnegie, Brad N. Potter
Accounting Historians Journal
While accounting researchers have explored international publishing patterns in the accounting literature generally, little is known about recent contributions to the specialist international accounting history journals. Specifically, this study surveys publishing patterns in the three specialist, internationally refereed, accounting history journals in the English language during the period 1996 to 1999. The survey covers 149 contributions in total and provides empirical evidence on the location of their authors, the subject country or region in each investigation, and the time span of each study. It also classifies the literature examined based on the literature classification framework provided by Carnegie and Napier …

Social Network Analysis Of The Founders Of Institutionalized Public Accountancy, T. A. Lee
Social Network Analysis Of The Founders Of Institutionalized Public Accountancy, T. A. Lee
Accounting Historians Journal
This paper examines the social relations of the founders of the first institutions of modern public accountancy in Scotland. The study uses archival data to construct social networks prior to 1854. Individual founders in the networks are identified as potentially significant sources of influence in the foundation events. The paper reports the social network analysis in several parts. First, relations between the founders of The Institute of Accountants in Edinburgh (IAE), renamed The Society of Accountants in Edinburgh (SAE), are networked. Second, a similar analysis is made of the foundation of The Institute of Accountants and Actuaries in Glasgow (IAAG). …

Group Support System Research In The 1990s: Leaders In Research Productivity, Zachary Wong
Journal of International Information Management
Research using Group Support Systems has increased gradually from their beginning in 1984, and the area is a significant part of the overall MIS literature. Because of its importance, a few studies have attempted to identify the leading researchers and institutions in the area as well as trends over the years. This study updates the analysis with a survey of 236 papers published during the 1990s from 43 academic journals. The results show that many of the researchers identified earlier are still leaders, but individual rankings have changed.

Survival Competencies Required Of Human Resource Development Generalists Who Are Solo -Performers In Organizations In The Next Five Years: A Modified -Delphi Study, Lois Dean Anderson
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the survival competencies required of human resource development (HRD) generalists who are working in an organization having a one person HRD or training department over the next five years. This person becomes the solo-performer responsible for all aspects of the HRD functions in the organization. This will serve as a foundation for a broader conceptual perspective for the generalist and may not serve as the perspective of the specialist. These competencies serve to define the responsibilities and necessary skills of the HRD generalist who must manage, design, develop, present or outsource and …
Conceptions Of Fairness And The Fair Labor Standards Act, Seth D. Harris
Conceptions Of Fairness And The Fair Labor Standards Act, Seth D. Harris
Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal
This article uses the history of the Fair Labor Standards Act's minimum wage provisions to examine how statutes that benefit interests that are comparatively weak in the political market become law. The article tracks the history of the American debate over fairness in wages beginning with the demise of slavery through the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938 in search of an answer. The search yields two answers. The first answer is that bargaining power is dynamic, not static. The article discusses the socio-economic crises and effective political advocacy by living wage proponents that changed the political …

Service-Learning As A Tool For Enhancing Student Outcomes In A College-Level Lecture Course, Amy Strage
Service-Learning As A Tool For Enhancing Student Outcomes In A College-Level Lecture Course, Amy Strage
Faculty Publications
This article reports on the effects of infusing a 20-hour per semester service-learning requirement into a large Introductory Child Development course. Analyses of student outcomes on course assignments revealed that the 166 students in the service-learning cohorts (2 classes) out-performed the 309 students who took the course during the three semesters prior to the introduction of the service-learning requirement. The advantage for the service-learning students appeared to stem primarily from stronger performance on narrative assessments (midterm and take-home final essays), and appeared to manifest itself only later in the semester. Analyses of students’ journals confirmed that students reflected thoughtfully about …
