The New Philanthropy In The New West Virginia, Roger A. Lohmann
The New Philanthropy In The New West Virginia, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Although philanthropy is a very old concept, many authorities today see a new philanthropy, including dramatic increases in donations and the assets of foundations. Also a new West Virginia may be emerging from the past of the forest agriculture of buckskin-clad mountaineers and coal mining. This presentation examines the convergence of the new philanthropy and this new West Virginia.
Composition Studies And Service Learning: Appealing To Communities?, Kevin Ball, Amy M. Goodburn
Composition Studies And Service Learning: Appealing To Communities?, Kevin Ball, Amy M. Goodburn
Department of English: Faculty Publications
In this essay, we wish to examine more fully how service learning is being conceptualized by compositionists, particularly through the trope of community, to consider how it functions as a practice and topic in our discipline. Our interest in doing so stems from our interests in and experiences with service learning and our desire to more fully examine why the service learning movement has been so appealing to us—in terms of the social and cultural aspirations it embodies for us as teachers at our particular institution and as scholars within the discipline. We seek to explore some of the issues …

Globalization And Race Hierarchy In The United States, James Jennings
Globalization And Race Hierarchy In The United States, James Jennings
New England Journal of Public Policy
National economies have become irreversibly globalized while racial and ethnic divisions continue to be a reality in many societies. The author has set forth three different scenarios in an attempt to explain the link between globalization and racial and ethnic relations: (1) globalization limits national growth, thus contributing to increased racial and ethnic tensions; (2) globalization does not affect racial and ethnic relations either positively or negatively; and (3) globalization expands domestic economies, consequently helping to reduce racial and ethnic tensions within national borders. This article explores these scenarios and shows that globalization through immigration and movement of capital can …

Black Women In Durham Politics, 1950-1996: From Grassroots To Electoral Politics, Grace Walton
Black Women In Durham Politics, 1950-1996: From Grassroots To Electoral Politics, Grace Walton
New England Journal of Public Policy
Based on the author's senior thesis in African-American history; this article about black women by a black woman was conceived to educate Americans about a different kind of history. It illustrates the silent political struggles of black women in Durham, North Carolina, and their gradual acceptance into American politics from 1950 to 1996. The oral history design demonstrates that black women's political activity underwent a transformation from grassroots politics to full electoral participation, which brought them to the forefront of Durham politics. Through both types of political activity, the unique political consciousness of black women continues to have a great …

Education For Democratic Citizenship, Rosemary C. Salamone
Education For Democratic Citizenship, Rosemary C. Salamone
Civic Engagement
Over the past decade, pollsters and pundits have raised warning flags of moral decay and declining political understanding and commitment among Americans. Scandals from Washington to Wall Street, voter apathy and cynicism, and the regeneration of the "me generation" in a climate of unprecedented prosperity have raised increasing concerns in the media over the moral state of the country. The most alarming evidence has emerged from education, validating and documenting the anxieties that Americans share over the failure of schools to create citizens of character. By the mid-1990s, half of the nation's high school students reported that drugs and violence …
