The Effects Of Family And Education Backgrounds On The Self-Identification Of Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Persons In Utah, Petra M. Rose

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study examined the effects of family and educational background factors on three dimensions of social identity among 35 deaf and hard-of-hearing respondents in Utah. Three dimensions of social identity-were distinguished: self-definition (i.e., the degree to which a respondent defined himself or herself as deaf), self-evaluation (i.e., the degree to which a respondent attached value and emotional significance to identifying himself or herself as deaf), and group introjection (i.e., the degree of commitment, belonging, and loyalty a respondent attached to membership in the Deaf community). Semi-structured, videotaped interviews were conducted with 35 deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in Utah. Respondents were …

The Geography Of Exploration: A Study In The Process Of Physical Exploration And Geographical Discovery, Joseph St.Onge May 2000

The Geography Of Exploration: A Study In The Process Of Physical Exploration And Geographical Discovery, Joseph St.Onge

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Exploration has been a common literary topic throughout the history of humans. However, much of this historical tradition has possessed a fairly narrow focus, emphasizing the drama and heroics of an individual explorer or concentrating on a description of a particular exploration. There has been little attempt at understanding the process of exploration and placing this important process in context with the historic and geographic phenomena that both affect and are affected by it. In this thesis, the author has broken the process of exploration down into a theoretical structure that is presented in a holistic model. This model has …

A Pathway To Prophethood: Joseph Smith Junior As Rodsman, Village Seer, And Judeo-Christian Prophet, Mark Ashurst-Mcgee May 2000

A Pathway To Prophethood: Joseph Smith Junior As Rodsman, Village Seer, And Judeo-Christian Prophet, Mark Ashurst-Mcgee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Joseph Smith Junior, founder of the Mormon faith, presented himself to America and the world as a prophet with the same powers as the widely known prophetic figures of the Bible. Like Moses and Elijah, he made God's will known to humankind. Before assuming this role, Smith had used divining rods and then seer stones to find underground water, buried treasure, lost items, and stray livestock. This thesis charts Joseph Smith's progression from rodsman to seer to prophet.

For the most part, I present Joseph Smith's divinatory development as he himself experienced it. Dowsing with a rod, seeing things in …

The Impact Of Minority Group Membership On Changes In Selected Health Outcomes Among Midlife Americans With Type 2 Diabetes, Brenda H. Ralls May 2000

The Impact Of Minority Group Membership On Changes In Selected Health Outcomes Among Midlife Americans With Type 2 Diabetes, Brenda H. Ralls

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Minority ethnic groups have disproportionately high rates of diabetes prevalence and complications. This study examined the degree, nature, and mediation of ethnic differences in changes over time in four health outcomes: functional limitations, emotional symptomatology, psychosomatic symptomatology, and self-reported health status. The theoretical context incorporated tenets from the social characteristics and the minority status perspectives.

Data were drawn from two rounds (1992 and 1996) of the Health and Retirement Survey, a national plane survey of midlife Americans. The study focused on a subsample of 744 respondents who had been diagnosed with diabetes or high blood sugar by the time of …

Transitions During University Life: Academic Persistence For Married And Single Students, Sandra A. Krambule

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was designed to look at the many factors that influence the transition to college life and academic persistence within the family life cycle framework using the ABCD-XYZ model of resource management. The sample included 348 students with declared minors within the College of Family Life. The dependent measure was student persistence in college. Independent variables included academic and institutional factors, gender and marital factors, family academic traditions, student motivation and commitment, self-esteem, stress factors, and social support. The results of this study indicate that the persistence variables chosen were better able to predict those who remain in school …

Mentoring At-Risk Youth: An Intervention For Skill Building In Problem Solving, Decision Making, And Conflict Resolution, Deborah J. Heater

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Low interpersonal skill level in younger youth has shown to lead to higher rates of delinquent behavior in older adolescents. Utah State University Extension established a program titled Youth and Families with Promise (YFP). This is a research-based mentoring program where mentors were screened, matched to individual youth, and activities planned that focus on 8 of the Search Institute's 40 assets. The program provided services for 156 at-risk youth ages 7 to 16 in six Utah counties, 66 of whom completed a pretest and posttest assessment. This research-based, intervention/prevention program has shown that the interventions used were effective in building …

Clinical Homework Directives: A Qualitative Exploratory Study, Emil F. Harker May 2000

Clinical Homework Directives: A Qualitative Exploratory Study, Emil F. Harker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A qualitative study was conducted to better understand how marriage and family therapists use homework directives in their work with couples. Eleven therapists of different marital therapy orientations were interviewed. Remarkably, all of the therapists reported using clinical homework directives in their practice with couples, including those clinicians who primarily identify themselves with psychodynamic models- -models that do not typically include homework in their constructs. Four themes emerged as to why homework is given: (a) to augment or extend the therapy session outside of therapy, (b) to help the clients focus on the therapy process between session, (c) to assess …

Business Is War: An Investigation Into Metaphor Use In Internet And Non-Internet Ipos, Michael W. Grieves

Student Scholarship

This study presents the results of an investigation into the use of metaphorical language in the summary and business description sections of Intial Public Offerings (IPO) prospectuses of both Internet and non-Internet companies. This research examined fifteen Internet companies and nine non-Internet companies, which were chosen at random, that completed IPOs between January 1, 1999 and August 6, 1999 for metaphorical use that was either common to both sets of companies or specific to the Internet companies. The research attempted to demonstrate that there is strong evidence for the theory that descriptive language used in the IPO prospectuses is metaphorical …

The Influence Of Shamanism On Korean Churches And How To Overcome It, Jin Woo Lee May 2000

The Influence Of Shamanism On Korean Churches And How To Overcome It, Jin Woo Lee

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

What problem do Korean churches have now? Korean churches have had serious growth problems since the 1990s'. Although Korean churches have grown rapidly with the economic growth of Korea, there have been many contributions and evil influences of shamanism, which lies deep in the minds of Korean people. Obviously, shamanism has made a contribution to growth of the Korean church since Christianity was introduced. Many churches and pastors have consented to or utilized such a tendency. However, this created serious problems. Shamanism is anti-Biblical. Shamanism brought about a theoretical combination, transmutation of religion and many mistakes in church life. A …

A Strategy To Revitalize Daybreak Prayer Meeting In Korea With Quiet Time, Heon Jae Shin May 2000

A Strategy To Revitalize Daybreak Prayer Meeting In Korea With Quiet Time, Heon Jae Shin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Prayer has been the one of the most significant factors in the rapid growth of Christianity in Korea. The Daybreak Prayer Meetings, which are common to all churches in Korea, has been a major part of the special prayer emphasis. The thesis studies the Biblical background, the history, the benefits, and some of the problems of the Daybreak Prayer Meeting.

The Daybreak Prayer Meetings are not as well attended or as powerful as they once were. This thesis proposes adding a Quiet Time type of personal Bible study to the regular traditional early morning prayer meetings. A major part of …

A Case Study Of Effective Teaching Techniques For Diverse College Populations: Generation Xers And Baby Boomers, Karen O. Fritz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify teaching techniques that could be used in college classrooms for effectively teaching two different age cohorts: Baby Boomers and Generation X students. Baby Boomers are those people born between 1946 and 1964. The subsequent generation, known as Generation X, was born between 1965 and 1981. A multi-case qualitative study was designed to include interviews with faculty, focus groups with students, and classroom observations at three different community colleges in east Tennessee. Thirty-one faculty, ranging in age from 29 to 65, comprised the faculty panel. There were 48 student participants. Half of the …

Reconstructing The World Of The Anorectic Outpatient: Procedures For Enhancing Trustworthiness And Credibility, Steven R. Thomsen, J. Kelley Mccoy, Marleen Williams May 2000

Reconstructing The World Of The Anorectic Outpatient: Procedures For Enhancing Trustworthiness And Credibility, Steven R. Thomsen, J. Kelley Mccoy, Marleen Williams

The Qualitative Report

Conducting in-depth interviews with clinical populations often poses a number of problems for qualitative researchers. Because of the skewed perception of themselves and the world around them, and because of their propensity to distort and deny the pathology of their illness, anorexic women are an example of one such group that can create possible problems for researchers, particularly those concerned with the trustworthiness and credibility of their analysis. How should qualitative researchers approach this population? How can a credible reconstruction of reality be produced? This paper explores and discusses the procedures utilized by the authors during an 18-month project in …

Critical Examinations Of The Known And The Unknown In Social Science: Where Do We Go From Here?, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn L. Piazza May 2000

Critical Examinations Of The Known And The Unknown In Social Science: Where Do We Go From Here?, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn L. Piazza

The Qualitative Report

If the use of social science assumptions and beliefs is what helped set fields of professional practice on the quest for recognition in the academy, what does the recent outpouring of publications on the limits of science reveal about sociocultural research prospects at the dawn of the 21st century? The last few years alone have witnessed the publication of special journal issues on the "scientific wars" of the nineties, year long professional association debates on "the known and unknown," and new books and online data sources proclaiming "the end of social science." Cumulatively, research and commentary on the limits of …

Constructivist Instructional Design: Creating A Multimedia Package For Teaching Critical Qualitative Research, Brandie Colón, Kay Ann Taylor, Jerry Willis May 2000

Constructivist Instructional Design: Creating A Multimedia Package For Teaching Critical Qualitative Research, Brandie Colón, Kay Ann Taylor, Jerry Willis

The Qualitative Report

Instructors for quantitative research courses often find that there are many different types of support material for those courses. That is not the case with qualitative courses. Very little support material is available for qualitative research courses. In this paper we describe the creation of one multimedia package that focuses on one type of qualitative research - critical ethnographic techniques. The package was created to help graduate students learn to use five critical ethnographic techniques: meaning fields, validity reconstruction, role analysis, power analysis, and horizon analysis. We used a constructivist instructional design model, R2D2, to guide our development work. It …

Getting In Trouble: The Meaning Of School For "Problem" Students, Darryl A. Pifer May 2000

Getting In Trouble: The Meaning Of School For "Problem" Students, Darryl A. Pifer

The Qualitative Report

Three students attending an alternative school were selected because they had been labeled by their previous school and teachers as "problem students." A series of interviews was completed with each individual with the purpose of exploring the meaning of school for each. Each participant indicated an acceptance of the notion that education is important, but each also felt negatively about school. Good and bad things about school were discussed as well as good and bad experiences. The participants also discussed how they perceived the actions and expectations of others. The unfairness they each experienced in school was discussed as well …

The Relationship Of Human Psychological Characteristics With Athletic Performance, Grant P. Murray May 2000

The Relationship Of Human Psychological Characteristics With Athletic Performance, Grant P. Murray

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a literature review summary on the topic of the relationship of human psychological characteristics with athletic performance. Two research questions guided its development: (1) Is there any evidence that there is a relationship between individual human psychological characteristics and athletic performance? (2) If there is any evidence that there is a relationship between individual human psychological characteristics and athletic performance, is there further evidence that those individual characteristics translate in some way into group dynamics or attributes that may similarly influence team performance?

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present study examined parental influences on educational and career goals of high school students. Data on educational and career goals from the Perceived Life Chances Interview were derived from 124 rural adolescents. One hundred of their mothers and 36 of their fathers completed the Inventory of Parental Influence which consists of five subscales of Parental Involvement/Help, Psychological Support, Parental Pressure, Pressure for Intellectual Development, and Time Management/Monitoring. Responses from the Perceived Life Chances Interview were qualitatively analyzed in order to derive categories that reflected the varying responses from participants. These categories served as dependent variables in a series of …

Law And Regret, Eric A. Posner May 2000

Law And Regret, Eric A. Posner

Michigan Law Review

Professor Farnsworth's1 topic is what he calls the "law of regretted decisions," those laws "that apply when you change your mind and reverse a decision" (p. ix). One finds such laws across many doctrinal divisions. Contract law influences the decision to change one's mind about keeping a promise. Tort law influences the decision to change one's mind after starting to rescue another person. The law of wills influences the decision to change one's mind about the distribution of one's assets among heirs. Farnsworth believes there are general principles that underlie the law of regretted decisions. Although there are some "anomalies," …

The Postmodern Infiltration Of Legal Scholarship, Arthur Austin May 2000

The Postmodern Infiltration Of Legal Scholarship, Arthur Austin

Michigan Law Review

For legal scholars it is the best of times. We are inundated by an eclectic range of writing that pushes the envelope from analysis and synthesis to the upper reaches of theory. Mainstream topics face fierce competition from fresh ideological visions, a variety of genres, and spirited criticism of the status quo. Young professors have access to a burgeoning variety of journals to circulate their ideas and advice while the mass media covets them as public intellectuals. There is a less sanguine mood; an increasingly vocal group of scholars complain that it is the worst of times and refer to …

Rationalizing Juvenile Justice, Carolyn J. Frantz May 2000

Rationalizing Juvenile Justice, Carolyn J. Frantz

Michigan Law Review

Few issues have occupied the public mind so much in recent years as the problem of youth violence. Due to sensational school shootings and public paranoia about the violence of youth gangs, America is concerned - very concerned - about the growing criminality of its children. In our concern, we find ourselves caught in the classic conundrum of criminal responsibility: reconciling the unavoidable knowledge that much of human behavior is determined with our strong instincts about free will. We blame violent television and video games, we blame single mothers, we blame low church attendance, but when all is said and …

Neoliberalism, Colonialism, And International Governance: Decentering The International Law Of Government Legitimacy, James Thuo Gathii May 2000

Neoliberalism, Colonialism, And International Governance: Decentering The International Law Of Government Legitimacy, James Thuo Gathii

Michigan Law Review

Brad R. Roth's Governmental Illegitimacy in International Law is a neoconservative realist response to liberal internationalists (or universalists). As a critique, the book unsurprisingly legitimizes the subject of its attack: liberal internationalism. That is so since in their opposition to each other, liberal internationalists and neoconservative realists fall within the same discursive formation - a Euro-American hegemony of thinking, writing, critiquing, engaging, producing, and practicing international law. This Review is an antihegemonic critique. It seeks to decenter this Euro-American opposition between liberal internationalism and neoconservative realism that has characterized the study of international law, especially in the post-Cold War period. …
