Little Squatter On The Osage Diminished Reserve: Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's Kansas Indians, Frances W. Kaye May 2000

Little Squatter On The Osage Diminished Reserve: Reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's Kansas Indians, Frances W. Kaye

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Laura Ingalls Wilder was a person of her time and place. She fictionalized her memories to give what she honestly believed was the truest possible account-true in deeply human ways as well as in accurate details-of one family's settlement history on the Great Plains frontier. I have never really liked her work. While my sister read all the Little House books, I read ... Zane Grey. That I do not share Wilder's values and point of view is no argument against the books-I do not share Zane Grey's values and point of view, either. But Zane Grey is not held …

Uncleared Homicides: A Canada/United States Comparison, Wendy C. Regoeczi, Leslie W. Kennedy, Robert A. Silverman May 2000

Uncleared Homicides: A Canada/United States Comparison, Wendy C. Regoeczi, Leslie W. Kennedy, Robert A. Silverman

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Beginning in the 1960s, there has been a marked decline in clearance rates of homicides, a finding that has generated little interest among criminological researchers. This article presents a comparative analysis of homicide clearance in Canada and the United States using data generated by the Canadian Centre of Justice Statistics and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation's Supplementary Homicide Reports. Using logistic regression, homicide clearance is predicted on the basis of specific victim and offense characteristics for cases in Canada versus the United States and in Ontario versus New York State. The results indicate that the model is a good …

Focus Groups In Ethnography Of Communication: Expanding Topics Of Inquiry Beyond Participant Observation, Elizabeth A. Suter May 2000

Focus Groups In Ethnography Of Communication: Expanding Topics Of Inquiry Beyond Participant Observation, Elizabeth A. Suter

The Qualitative Report

Historically, ethnography of communication has viewed participant observation as the central and necessary methodological point of departure for any ethnographic endeavor. However, as this article illustrates, this becomes problematic when particular topics of inquiry do not provide ample opportunities for observation. After struggles to participant observe conversations on women's marital naming practices, I was able to research this topic and produce participant observation-like understandings after I incorporated focus groups into my methods. Based upon these experiences and study, this article urges ethnography of communication scholars to step outside their traditional methodological practices, when necessary, and integrate the focus group method …

Feminist Content Analysis And Representative Characters, Patricia Leavy May 2000

Feminist Content Analysis And Representative Characters, Patricia Leavy

The Qualitative Report

This paper details textual, visual and audio-visual content analysis from both a general and feminist perspective. It provides a backstage look at how I took an abstract idea of analyzing the larger socio-cultural-political American 1990s/2000 context through a representative fictional character, Ally McBeal, and created a manageable project outline for how to achieve my research goals using content analysis in multiple way

The Devil In The Detail: An Account Of Self-Harm, Bogusia Temple, Jennifer Harris May 2000

The Devil In The Detail: An Account Of Self-Harm, Bogusia Temple, Jennifer Harris

The Qualitative Report

In this article we discuss self-harm data from an A & E (Emergency Room) Department in an English hospital. In order to be able to examine the relationship between data collection, analysis and findings we focus on the processes we used as researchers in constructing the dataset. Doing this, we argue, is as important as just analysing findings since this process in part constructs the findings. Moreover, how people's actions are defined may impact on the way they are treated.

Solidarity In Consumption, Cass R. Sunstein, Edna Ullmann-Margalit May 2000

Solidarity In Consumption, Cass R. Sunstein, Edna Ullmann-Margalit

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Contrary to a common picture of relationships in a market economy, people often express communal and membership-seeking impulses via consumption choices, purchasing goods and services because other people are doing so as well. Shared identities are maintained and created in this way. Solidarity goods are goods whose value increases as the number of people enjoying them increases. Exclusivity goods are goods whose value decreases as the number of people enjoying them increases. Distinctions can be drawn among diverse value functions, capturing diverse relationships between the value of goods and the value of shared or unshared consumption. Though markets spontaneously produce …

Vernacular Letterforms: An Expression Of Cultural And Social Values, Georgiana Leite

Theses

This thesis investigates similar problem-solving processes used in the fields of graphic design and engineering, revealing an underlying relationship between the two disciplines. It shows the principles these two disciplines share and how they employ a common creative process. By comparing these two vastly different disciplines, an understanding of the methodology of thought is constructed.

The Service Sojourn: Conceptualizing The College Student Volunteer Experience, Brian C. Schmidt May 2000

The Service Sojourn: Conceptualizing The College Student Volunteer Experience, Brian C. Schmidt

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Despite the increasing popularity of volunteerism in student activities and service-learning courses on college campuses, little is known about the experience of volunteers. This study examines the experience of 16 students from the University of Utah who t participated in community service. The qualitative investigation is based on 54 interviews regarding student descriptions of their experience. What common events occurred? How did they make sense of their experience? What, really, did they learn? Ethnographic interviews and a "naturalistic" approach were used to identify patterns and analyze the data. Grounded in reoccurring themes such as leaving familiar surroundings. the shock of …

Associations Of Civic Attitudes In Service Learning, Christina M. Roemer May 2000

Associations Of Civic Attitudes In Service Learning, Christina M. Roemer

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Civic responsibility is comprised of actions and attitudes associated with democratic governance and social participation. Students enrolled at institutions of higher education have the opportunity to transform their social interests into advocacy through personal connections with the community. Service learning is an effective method of increasing citizenship participation and civic responsibility by incorporating community service activities with academic coursework.

This study used survey research to examine the civic attitude scores of service learning students at a large, public, mid-Atlantic state university. The research questions attained information on the associations among students who perform written and discussion reflection activities (outside of …

The Intercession Of The Prophet, Warren Graff May 2000

The Intercession Of The Prophet, Warren Graff

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The question brought to the forefront is this: Is intercession proper to the prophetic office? The thesis of this study is that intercession must be understood as proper to the prophetic office. Prophetic intercession on behalf of the people is to be understood with reference to the institution and nature of the prophetic office. This study will examine this subject by surveying particular accounts of prophetic intercession. This will be done by examining relevant texts, by critically considering relevant commentaries on these texts, and by drawing conclusions from these texts that might shed light on an understanding of the prophetic …

Service-Learning Leadership Development For Youths, Joy Des Marais, Farid Farzanehkia May 2000

Service-Learning Leadership Development For Youths, Joy Des Marais, Farid Farzanehkia

Special Topics, General

Service-learning without intentional leadership development is trivial and shallow, these youthful authors point out. And such leadership development requires adults and young people to work collaboratively in the design of service-learning. When that happens, the outcome will be both profound learning and successful projects.

Service-Learning And Multicultural/Multiethnic Perspectives: From Diversity To Equity, Wokie Weah, Verna Cornelia Simmons, Mcclellan Hall May 2000

Service-Learning And Multicultural/Multiethnic Perspectives: From Diversity To Equity, Wokie Weah, Verna Cornelia Simmons, Mcclellan Hall

Diversity

The "missionary ideology" that currently underlies much of the service-learning movement is mostly the result of a series of decisions intended to "do good things" for others, and so the movement does not directly acknowledge what those others, particularly communities of color, might hove to offer, the authors say. It's time to change that.

Service-Learning: An Administrator's Tool For Improving Schools And Connecting With The Community, Sheldon Berman, Sheila Bailey, Randall Collins, Dale Kinsley, Elizabeth Holman

School K-12

What should students know and be able to do by the time they graduate high school? This basic question is at the heart of most education reforms in recent years. Increasingly, the answer lies not just in strong academic skills but also in a sense of self and the individual’s role in supporting and building a vibrant community.

Japan's Laws On Dual Nationality In The Context Of A Globalized World, Mie Murazumi May 2000

Japan's Laws On Dual Nationality In The Context Of A Globalized World, Mie Murazumi

Washington International Law Journal

Japan's Nationality Law has evolved into a law that tends to prevent or eliminate dual nationality. This characteristic conforms with the traditional view that every country should take steps to avoid situations of dual nationality. It also fits in with Japan's cultural homogeneity and long-developed sense of national loyalty. For over a century, the world viewed dual nationality as an evil to be avoided because of conflict of loyalty problems and difficulties with diplomatic protection. However, the postwar globalization process has produced a desire in many people to have dual nationality as a part of their global identity. Fewer conflicts …
