The Web Magazine 2000, Fall, Matt Webber Oct 2000

The Web Magazine 2000, Fall, Matt Webber

The Web Magazine

The Web Magazine focuses on alumni news and campus events from Gardner-Webb College; now Gardner-Webb University. This issue's top story on plans and possibilities is given by former N.C. Superior Court Judge John M. Gardner in which he includes his opinions on law school, a new campus, and the NCAA Division 1. Former Pastor, Dr. Robert Canoy, takes on the role as Associate Dean of GWU. It is also important to recognize students and their experiences in life. In this issue a young man by the name of Donnie Thurman tells us about his near-death experience and the death of …

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

Many exciting things have been happening in the Women's Studies Office since I arrived on the third floor of Avery HalL I feel a little dizzy, but also quite exhilarated, by all the activities and projects we have underway. My transition into this challenging job has been made much easier by Glenda Moore, our program Secretary, by the energy and imagination of Graduate Assistants, Tagi Adams and Yeaji Shin, and by a hard-working Advisory Committee: Mary Beck, Barbara DiBernard, Carole Levin, Christin Mamiya, Adelaida Martinez, and Bobbi Shamburg.

Contesting Tradition And Combating Intolerance A History Of Free Thought In Kansas, Aaron K. Ketchell Oct 2000

Contesting Tradition And Combating Intolerance A History Of Free Thought In Kansas, Aaron K. Ketchell

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Diversity is the hallmark of freethought in Kansas, for freethinkers were never a homogeneous body. The movement was not only religious, or for that matter, anti-religious, although the majority of social and political issues that it addressed had religious grounding. No one specific organized group dominated historical Kansas freethinking. Instead, individuals in the form of editors of various newspapers, journals, and book series became the landmarks by which the course of the movement's history may be most easily traced. Although the attitudes of freethinkers toward religion are the primary concern of this essay, it must be remembered that freethinkers had …

Josiah Quincy's 1844 Visit With Joseph Smith, Jed L. Woodworth Oct 2000

Josiah Quincy's 1844 Visit With Joseph Smith, Jed L. Woodworth

BYU Studies

A prophet's claims have always invited attention. The Prophet Joseph Smith took calls from an array of personalities who would not be satisfied without seeing this curiosity in the flesh. The visitors came from near and far and from every walk and station of life: politicians and priests, paupers and pundits, charlatans and seekers, and almost everything in between. Arriving first in a trickle and then in a stream, they found the Prophet wherever he had gathered the Saints. Some of the travelers left accounts of their visits, and from these sketches later generations came to know Joseph, too.
