Development Of A Novel Method For Assessing Balance: The Quantitative Posturography System, Jacinta Browne, Neil O'Hare Jan 2000

Development Of A Novel Method For Assessing Balance: The Quantitative Posturography System, Jacinta Browne, Neil O'Hare

Articles

Balance is the ability to maintain equilibrium while sitting or standing. There are a number of different methods, which are used to assess balance: technical methods such as Sway Magnetometry, Ataxia Meter and Force Platforms and clinical methods such as Functional Reach Test, Berg Balance Test and Fall Risk Index. The most frequently used technical method is the force platform. There are two types of Force Platform a static and a dynamic Force Platform of which the dynamic Force Platform has been found to be more sensitive at detecting impaired balance. The Quantitative Posturography System (QPS) described in this paper …

Left Out In The Cold: The Problem With Aboriginal Title Under Section 35(1) Of The Constitution Act, 1982 For Historically Nomadic Aboriginal Peoples, Brian J. Burke Jan 2000

Left Out In The Cold: The Problem With Aboriginal Title Under Section 35(1) Of The Constitution Act, 1982 For Historically Nomadic Aboriginal Peoples, Brian J. Burke

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In R. v. Adams and Delgamuukw v. British Columbia, the Supreme Court of Canada made statements to the effect that certain historically nomadic Aboriginal groups may be unable to make out a claim for Aboriginal title under section 35(1) of the Constitution Act, 1982. In light of the anthropological evidence relating to the close connection some of these groups enjoyed with the lands they occupied, a serious injustice may arise if these groups are indeed barred from an Aboriginal title claim. The author attempts to correct this potential injustice by demonstrating that at least some of these historically nomadic groups …

Bill 11, The Canada Health Act And The Social Union: The Need For Institutions, Sujit Choudhry Jan 2000

Bill 11, The Canada Health Act And The Social Union: The Need For Institutions, Sujit Choudhry

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article argues that the debate over the future of Medicare has been dominated by financial considerations at the expense of an examination of the place of supervisory institutions in the health care system. Supervisory institutions will be of central importance to the future of Medicare because any future system will include some national standards, which, to be effective, must be interpreted, applied and enforced by institutions of some kind. This article focuses on two specific institutional questions: the dismal record of federal enforcement of the existing national standards of the Canada Health Act, and the pressing need for dispute-settlement …

Law's Expression: The Promise And Perils Of Judicial Opinion Writing In Canadian Constitutional Law, Paul Horwitz Jan 2000

Law's Expression: The Promise And Perils Of Judicial Opinion Writing In Canadian Constitutional Law, Paul Horwitz

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article argues that there is a link between one's theory of constitutional law, and one's judgments about style in judicial opinion writing. It identifies several special functions of the constitutional opinion, including the democratic function of responding to the counter-majoritarian difficulty through an act of public justification, and the inter-generational function of provoking a temporally extended dialogue about constitutional values. Drawing on these functions, it argues for an opinion writing style dubbed "open-textured minimalism," that seeks to resolve cases narrowly, articulate fundamental values and principles, and spark long-term debates about the underlying constitutional values supporting each decision. The author …

L'Intégration Des Valeurs Et Des Intérêts Autochtones Dans Le Discours Judiciaire Et Normatif Canadien, Andrée Lajoie, Eric Gélineau, Isabelle Duplessis, Guy Rocher

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article aims to define the degree to which values presented by groups representing Aboriginal interests in the Supreme Court of Canada have been integrated into the discourse of the Court and the decisions of political actors in Canada. The authors' analysis confirms the hypothesis that the Court, in contrast to its favourable treatment of private claims made by social minorities, is less receptive to the claims made by Aboriginals, a political minority whose claims are centered on political power and territory, issues that have been relegated to political negotiations. The significant difference between judicial and political decisionmakers concerning Aboriginal …

Political changes in the former Soviet Union have allowed social scientists to explore a variety of family and child development issues that were closed to systematic investigation for many decades (Maddock, Hogan, Antonov, & Matskovsky, 1994). Prior Soviet psychological research focused on cognitive rather than socioemotional processes for political reasons (Kerig, 1996). Therefore, Western researchers had little opportunity to conduct research on children’s social development in the context of the family in the former Soviet Union.

Foreign Language Textbooks In The Classroom: Bridging The Gap Between Second Language Acquisition Theory And Pedagogy, Kristina Harlan '00

Honors Projects

Second language acquisition (SLA) research encompasses various theories of language learning in which the theoretical perspectives sometimes are not connected to SLA methods used by instructors in the classroom. This paper discusses several theories of SLA in an effort to better understand their connection to pedagogy. Foreign language (FL) pedagogy accounts for various methodological approaches the most common being Grammatical-Translation, Direct Method, Audiolingual, and Communicative. These distinctive methodologies have produced a variety of FL textbooks which focus on one or several methodologies.

The following research examines a selection oftextbooks in which the methodologies in beginning language learning are analyzed and …

Counting It All And Counting For Something: An Exploration Of Women In The Contingent Service Industry, Cheryl L. Buchholz Jan 2000

Counting It All And Counting For Something: An Exploration Of Women In The Contingent Service Industry, Cheryl L. Buchholz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The American workplace has gone through numerous changes in the Twentieth century. One of the most significant changes is the role of women in the workplace. The role of women in the modern workplace is vastly different from their role in the beginning of the Twentieth century. The changing role of women in the workplace is present in the biggest sector to grow in employment in the last 20 years: the service industry. The lack of significant research of the women's role in the service industry warrants sociological exploration of this area of employment for women. This thesis is an …

Automated Identification Of The Operational Modes Of Switched Electric Circuits, J. Jatskevich, O. Wasynczuk, E. A. Walters, C. E. Lucas, Steven Pekarek, P. T. Lamm

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the analysis of power-electronic-based energy conversion systems, it is important to identify the operational modes of the associated converters and inverters. However, as the number of switching elements increases, it becomes more difficult to analytically establish all possible modes of operation. In this paper, a modelling technique is described wherein a state-space representation of the overall system is generated automatically and updated dynamically as each new topology is encountered. Utilizing this approach, it becomes possible to identify the operational modes of converters and inverters based upon the cyclically repeated sequences of topologies that can be observed during steady-state operation. …

Development Of A Functional Basis For Design, Robert B. Stone, Kristin L. Wood Jan 2000

Development Of A Functional Basis For Design, Robert B. Stone, Kristin L. Wood

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Functional models represent a form independent blueprint of a product. As with any blueprint or schematic, a consistent language or coding system is required to ensure others can read it. This paper introduces such a design language, called a functional basis, where product function is characterized in a verb-object (function-flow) format. The set of functions and flows is intended to comprehensively describe the mechanical design space. Clear definitions are provided for each function and flow. The functional basis is compared to previous functional representations and is shown to subsume these attempts as well as offer a more consistent classification scheme. …

The Training Environment Of The Irish Defence Forces:Integrated Training, Bullying And Sexual Harassment, Tom Clonan

Books/Book chapters

The training environment of the Irish Defence Forces: integrated training and bullying in the workplace In this chapter I will refer to recruit and cadet training within the defence forces in light of international trends in integrated training. Following the consideration of ‘commitment’ in terms of numbers of women recruited to the organisation in chapter five, this chapter assesses the “education” component of the setting (Reskin and Padavic, 1994). Through an examination of archival data (syllabi of training, training policy etc) and the data obtained at interview, an assessment of the PDF’s equality of opportunity agenda as it applies to …

The Victimization Of Juvenile Prostitutes In Ethiopia, Kevin Lalor Jan 2000

The Victimization Of Juvenile Prostitutes In Ethiopia, Kevin Lalor

Articles

This paper quantifies the victimisation experienced by 30 juvenile prostitutes in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Seventy three per cent had been raped at least once and ninety three per cent had been beaten in the course of their work. Only 50% used contraception, resulting in a pregnancy rate of 37%. Findings indicate that prostitution is a highly victimogenic lifestyle, fostered by conditions of extreme deprivation. Policy and practice implications are discussed.

Working Memory And Human Reasoning : An Individual Differences Approach, Alison Jayne Capon Jan 2000

Working Memory And Human Reasoning : An Individual Differences Approach, Alison Jayne Capon

School of Psychology Theses

Experiments 1-3 investigated the relationship between working memory and syllogistic and five-ten-n series spatial inference. A secondary aim was to replicate the findings of Shah and Miyake (1996) who suggested the use of separate central resources of working memory for spatial and verbal ability. The correlational analysis showed that the complex verbal and spatial working memory span tasks were associated together and consistently predicted reasoning performance in both verbal and visual modalities. The confirmatory factor analysis showed that three factors best accounted for the data -a verbal, a spatial, and a general resource. All the span tasks and most of …

Adaptive Information Filtering: Evolutionary Computation And N-Gram Representation, Daniel R. Tauritz, Ida G. Sprinkhuizen-Kuyper Jan 2000

Adaptive Information Filtering: Evolutionary Computation And N-Gram Representation, Daniel R. Tauritz, Ida G. Sprinkhuizen-Kuyper

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Adaptive Information Filtering (AIF) is concerned with filtering information streams in changing environments. The changes may occur both on the transmission side (the nature of the streams can change) and on the reception side (the interests of a user can change). The research described in this paper details the progress made in a prototype AIF system based on weighted n-gram analysis and evolutionary computation. A major advance is the design and implementation of an n-gram class library allowing experimentation with different values of n instead of solely with 3-grams as in the past. The new prototype system was tested on …

Reducing Cognitive Overheads In A Web Warehouse Using Reverse-Osmosis, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Wee Keong Ng, Ee-Peng Lim, Sourav S. Bhowmick

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper provides a quantitative analysis of reducing cognitive overheads in a Web warehouse using an important class of operation called reverse osmosis. The analysis is used to examine two different cognitive overheads of locating relevant nodes or information and display time of a Web table. A reverse-osmosis operation enables us to eliminate in relevant information from a collection of Web documents stored in the form of a Web table. We call such an operation reverse-osmosis because it is analogous to the reverse osmosis process in the field of water purification. We discuss a formal algorithm of the reverse-osmosis operation

Ethics Exercises For Civil, Environmental, And Geological Engineers, Paul Michael Santi

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The practices of civil, environmental, and geological engineering share many common ethical dilemmas. These fields typically require extensive interaction with clients and regulatory agencies, while dealing with unpredictable earth materials for design and uncertain design parameters. Consequently, a capstone design course must address not only technical issues, but also a wide range of ethical and behavioral issues. This study presents a series of exercises used in the classroom to teach these issues through dealing with "gray" ethical areas, concepts of advocacy and the use of compromise, relating specific stories to global concepts, proper behavior in the corporate environment, and the …

Border Detection On Digitized Skin Tumor Images, Z. Zhang, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A radial search technique is presented for detecting skin tumor borders in clinical dermatology images. First, it includes two rounds of radial search based on the same tumor center. The first-round search is independent, and the second-round search is knowledge-based tracking. Then a rescan with a new center is used to solve the blind-spot problem. The algorithm is tested on model images with excellent performance, and on 300 real clinical images with a satisfactory result

Enantiomeric High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Separation Of Β- Substituted Tryptophan Analogues, G. Török, A. Péter, E. Vékes, J. Sápi, M. Laronze, J. Y. Laronze, Daniel W. Armstrong Jan 2000

Enantiomeric High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Separation Of Β- Substituted Tryptophan Analogues, G. Török, A. Péter, E. Vékes, J. Sápi, M. Laronze, J. Y. Laronze, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The high-performance liquid chromatographic enantioresolution of β- substituted tryptophan analogues by direct and indirect methods is reported. The direct separation was carried out on chiral crown ether-bonded, on the macrocyclic antibiotic teicoplanin-bonded or on different derivatized β- cyclodextrin-bonded phases. The indirect resolution was achieved by applying pre-column derivatization with the chiral reagents 1-fluoro-2,4- dinitrophenyl-5-L-alanine amide (FDAA) and 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D- glucopyranosyl isothiocyanate (GITC). In the separation of all four isomers of the analytes, the indirect methods seemed to be more efficient than the direct methods. In most cases, the FDAA derivatives of the stereoisomers could be separated with better selectivity in methanol-containing …
