Reducing Cognitive Overheads In A Web Warehouse Using Reverse-Osmosis, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Wee Keong Ng, Ee-Peng Lim, Sourav S. Bhowmick

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper provides a quantitative analysis of reducing cognitive overheads in a Web warehouse using an important class of operation called reverse osmosis. The analysis is used to examine two different cognitive overheads of locating relevant nodes or information and display time of a Web table. A reverse-osmosis operation enables us to eliminate in relevant information from a collection of Web documents stored in the form of a Web table. We call such an operation reverse-osmosis because it is analogous to the reverse osmosis process in the field of water purification. We discuss a formal algorithm of the reverse-osmosis operation

Enantiomeric High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Separation Of Β- Substituted Tryptophan Analogues, G. Török, A. Péter, E. Vékes, J. Sápi, M. Laronze, J. Y. Laronze, Daniel W. Armstrong Jan 2000

Enantiomeric High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Separation Of Β- Substituted Tryptophan Analogues, G. Török, A. Péter, E. Vékes, J. Sápi, M. Laronze, J. Y. Laronze, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The high-performance liquid chromatographic enantioresolution of β- substituted tryptophan analogues by direct and indirect methods is reported. The direct separation was carried out on chiral crown ether-bonded, on the macrocyclic antibiotic teicoplanin-bonded or on different derivatized β- cyclodextrin-bonded phases. The indirect resolution was achieved by applying pre-column derivatization with the chiral reagents 1-fluoro-2,4- dinitrophenyl-5-L-alanine amide (FDAA) and 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D- glucopyranosyl isothiocyanate (GITC). In the separation of all four isomers of the analytes, the indirect methods seemed to be more efficient than the direct methods. In most cases, the FDAA derivatives of the stereoisomers could be separated with better selectivity in methanol-containing …

Border Detection On Digitized Skin Tumor Images, Z. Zhang, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss Jan 2000

Border Detection On Digitized Skin Tumor Images, Z. Zhang, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A radial search technique is presented for detecting skin tumor borders in clinical dermatology images. First, it includes two rounds of radial search based on the same tumor center. The first-round search is independent, and the second-round search is knowledge-based tracking. Then a rescan with a new center is used to solve the blind-spot problem. The algorithm is tested on model images with excellent performance, and on 300 real clinical images with a satisfactory result

A Study About The "Cultural Orientation" In Chinese Avant-Garde Art., Jianxiong Mao Jan 2000

A Study About The "Cultural Orientation" In Chinese Avant-Garde Art., Jianxiong Mao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Chinese avant-garde art until 1989 was an historical product of that special era. It “appropriated” Western contemporary art and endowed it with its own historical and cultural connotation. The juxtaposition of the elite appealing and the deconstructively post-modern scepticism constituted Chinese avant-gardian discourse at that time. The “Opening” political-economic context of the society virtually encouraged and now has digested the forms and concepts of Modernism which are calmly accepted today as one episode of art history, an enlightened experiment. To use the labels of Western contemporary social, cultural and artistic movements to describe Chinese Xiandai art will cause confusion, for …

Law And Values In Governance: The Singapore Way, Eugene K. B. Tan Jan 2000

Law And Values In Governance: The Singapore Way, Eugene K. B. Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The article examines the role of law and the legal system in catalysing Singapore's development success. It argues that there is a dichotomy in the approach with regard to commercial law and law relating to individual freedom and rights and civil society. Universalism characterises the treatment of commercial laws while cultural relativism and a communitarian-based understanding of rights and obligations are features of the law relating to the rights of the individual. Instrumentalism, driven by a particularistic 'communitarian' political philosophy underpinned by strong Confucianist values, is very much motivated by the need for good governance as a prerequisite for economic …

Geographic Literacy Among Lds Returned Missionaries, Paul Cook Stahmann Jan 2000

Geographic Literacy Among Lds Returned Missionaries, Paul Cook Stahmann

Theses and Dissertations

The majority of male Ricks College students, while serving as missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spend two years living in geographically unfamiliar environments. This thesis compares the geographic literacy of those Ricks College males who have served LDS Church missions with those who have not. A test of geographic literacy was administered to 306 male Ricks College students. Returned missionaries demonstrated significantly higher knowledge of general cultural and physical geography than pre-missionanes. In contrast, returned missionaries demonstrated no greater ability to identify global places such as countries and cities. As expected, the returned missionaries possessed …

Tribal Law As Indigenous Social Reality And Separate Consciousness [Re]Incorporating Customs And Traditions Into Tribal Law, Christine Zuni Cruz

Tribal Law Journal

Tribal Law as Indigenous Social Reality and Separate Consciousness-[Re]Incorporating Customs and Traditions into Tribal Law by Christine Zuni Cruz explores the reflection of traditional legal concepts and values in enacted laws of indigenous nations. The premise of this article is that "an indigenous nation's sovereignty is strengthened if its law is based upon its own internalized values and norms." Zuni-Cruz's article questions the impact of enacted western laws on indigenous communities' people and culture.

A Checklist And Distribution Maps Of The Amphibians And Reptiles Of South Dakota, Royce E. Ballinger, Justin W. Meeker, Marcus Thies

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Fourteen species of amphibians and 30 species of reptiles are documented from South Dakota, based on the examination of 7,361 museum specimen records. No species of the herpetofauna is endemic to the state, which contains a mixture of species from especially the southern and western regions of the United States. Four amphibians (Ambystoma tigrinum, Bufo cognatus, Pseudacris triseriata, and Rana pipiens) and three reptiles (Chrysemys picta, Heterodon nasicus, and Thamnophis radix) occur statewide in appropriate habitats. Three amphibians and 11 reptiles reach their northern distributional limits in the state, and two amphibians …

A Competitive Analysis On The Metal Packaging Coatings Industry In Malaysia, Mee Lin Yang

Student Works (2000-2009)

Numerous studies had been carried out in the past, on various industries in Malaysia, but none could be found with regards to the metal packaging coatings industry. The market environment and size of the industry have remained broadly unknown. Statistical reports by the statistic department often include the output of this industry under the paints and varnish production category. This research was an attempt to study and consolidate as much information as possible, pertaining to the market environment and market size of the metal packaging coatings industry in Malaysia. In order to achieve this, a market survey was conducted by …

Afghanistan's Economic Potentials And Malaysian Entrepreneurs' Perceptions, Abdul Sattar Murad

Student Works (2000-2009)

Afghanistan is a country that has started its economic development after the World War II, one of the very early beginners in launching its economic development programs; it is one of the least developed countries in Asia. This study reviews the economic potentials of Afghanistan including mineral, water, land resources and perception of Malaysian Investors. These two aspects of the study highlight the causes of low economic development and factors responsible for it. This study attempts to examine four logically linked questions, i.e. (i) what are the trade potentials of Afghanistan? (ii) What are the mineral potentials of Afghanistan? What …

A Discourse Analysis Of Electronic Mail Message In A Local Business Community, Yong Kiang Ng Jan 2000

A Discourse Analysis Of Electronic Mail Message In A Local Business Community, Yong Kiang Ng

Student Works (2000-2009)

Communication by electronic mail has become a dominant mode of communication both within and between organisations in the last few years, many of which have developed their own in-house electronic systems. More and more of our students will enter the workforce to find that their job involves using the electronic mail system for communication; therefore we need insights into the nature of this mode of communication, and ascertain ways in which we can assist our students in acquiring "its particular characteristics, in the same way we teach spoken English, writing and the use of telephones" (Murray, 1988: 4). ln light …

Reinvigorating Chapter 11: The Case For Reinstating The Stock-For-Debt Exception In Bankruptcy, Michelle A. Cecil Jan 2000

Reinvigorating Chapter 11: The Case For Reinstating The Stock-For-Debt Exception In Bankruptcy, Michelle A. Cecil

Faculty Publications

This Article suggests that such a proposal will harmonize the bankruptcy policy of rehabilitating financially distressed corporations with the tax policy of ensuring that true economic income is subject to federal income taxation.27 Parts II and III of this Article will trace the common law evolution of the stock-for-debt exception and its statutory codification in 1980, with particular emphasis on the stated policy justifications for the exception. Part IV will then examine the history of the repeal of the stock-for-debt exception, demonstrating that the repeal was the result of hasty political maneuvering rather than reasoned legislative decision-making. In Part V, …

Silencing John Doe: Defamation And Discourse In Cyberspace, Lyrissa Lidsky Jan 2000

Silencing John Doe: Defamation And Discourse In Cyberspace, Lyrissa Lidsky

Faculty Publications

John Doe has become a popular defamation defendant as corporations and their officers bring defamation suits for statements made about them in Internet discussion fora. These new suits are not even arguably about recovering money damages but instead are brought for symbolic reasons — some worthy, some not so worthy. If the only consequence of these suits were that Internet users were held accountable for their speech, the suits would be an unalloyed good. However, these suits threaten to suppress legitimate criticism along with intentional and reckless falsehoods, and existing First Amendment law doctrines are not responsive to the threat …

Two Degrees Of Speech Protection: Free Speech Through The Prism Of Agricultural Disparagement Laws, Howard M. Wasserman Jan 2000

Two Degrees Of Speech Protection: Free Speech Through The Prism Of Agricultural Disparagement Laws, Howard M. Wasserman

Faculty Publications

In the wake of a 1989 national television broadcast reporting the alleged cancer risk of a chemical applied to apples on trees, many states passed agricultural product disparagement (APD) statutes. These statutes grant civil causes of action to the growers and sellers of perishable food products, against anyone who speaks negatively or disparagingly, without basis in scientific evidence, about the product's safety. In this Article, Howard M Wasserman explores the interplay between the APD statutes and the First Amendment. First, Mr. Wasserman discusses the three categories of restrictions on the freedom of speech, focusing primarily on private civil tort actions …

Mutations In The Protein Kinase A R1Α Regulatory Subunit Cause Familial Cardiac Myxomas And Carney Complex, Mairead Casy, Carl J. Vaughan, Jie He, Cathy J. Hatcher, Jordan M. Winter, Stanislawa Weremowicz, Kate Montgomery, Raju Kucherlapati, Cynthia C. Morton, Craig T. Bassoni Jan 2000

Mutations In The Protein Kinase A R1Α Regulatory Subunit Cause Familial Cardiac Myxomas And Carney Complex, Mairead Casy, Carl J. Vaughan, Jie He, Cathy J. Hatcher, Jordan M. Winter, Stanislawa Weremowicz, Kate Montgomery, Raju Kucherlapati, Cynthia C. Morton, Craig T. Bassoni

PCOM Scholarly Works

Cardiac myxomas are benign mesenchymal tumors that can present as components of the human autosomal dominant disorder Carney complex. Syndromic cardiac myxomas are associated with spotty pigmentation of the skin and endocrinopathy. Our linkage analysis mapped a Carney complex gene defect to chromosome 17q24. We now demonstrate that the PRKAR1α gene encoding the R1α regulatory subunit of cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) maps to this chromosome 17q24 locus. Furthermore, we show that PRKAR1α frameshift mutations in three unrelated families result in haploinsufficiency of R1α and cause Carney complex. We did not detect any truncated R1α protein encoded by mutant PRKAR1α. …

Oculina Coral Banks Of Florida: Conservation And Management Of A Deep-Water Reserve., John K. Reed Jan 2000

Oculina Coral Banks Of Florida: Conservation And Management Of A Deep-Water Reserve., John K. Reed

Faculty Scholarship

In 1975, during photographic surveys of the continental shelf using the johnson-Sea-Link Research Submersible, scientists from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution discovered high relief pinnacles at depths of 70-100 m that were living coral reefs composed entirely of the ivory tree coral Oculina varicosa. Various research ensued including studies on coral growth rates, community structure of associated invertebrates and fishes, effects of upwelling, bioerosion, sediments, geology, and taxonomic studies of fish, decapods, mollusks, echinoderms, sipunculids, pycnogonids, and amphipods. During the 1970s these deep-water reefs were teeming with large populations of grouper, snapper, and amberjack. Fishing pressure from both commercial and recreational …

The Un, Nato, And International Law After Kosovo, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2000

The Un, Nato, And International Law After Kosovo, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

NATO's decision on 13 October 1998 to use force in Yugoslavia and its subsequent use of force beginning on 24 March 1999 were inconsistent with both the explicit terms of the United Nations Charter and Security Council practice. Most of NATO's member states have argued that the situation was exceptional and should have no bearing on the future need for Security Council authorization. Not so the United States; US officials have not spoken of an exception. Several high-ranking officials of the Clinton Administration have stated that they do not recognize the necessity for Security Council authorization when NATO takes enforcement …

Brown’S Promise, Blaine’S Legacy, Richard W. Garnett Jan 2000

Brown’S Promise, Blaine’S Legacy, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

If nothing else, this Review Essay, like Professor Viteritti's book, should be timely. As I write, the United States Supreme Court in Mitchell v. Helms has just decided that publicly funded computers and other educational materials may be loaned to private and religious schools. The decision is widely viewed as signaling, if not determining, the constitutional fate of school-choice experiments like those in Cleveland and Milwaukee. As it happened, just one week before Mitchell, the Sixth Circuit heard oral arguments in Simmons-Harris v. Zelman (the Ohio voucher case) as hundreds of voucher supporters chanted "freedom, freedom!" across the street from …

Nuclear Weapons, Lethal Injection, And American Catholics: Faith Confronting American Civil Religion, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

But, still, honor is important among us. "He was an honorable man" is still a moving thing to say, at a (man's) funeral. The notion, and the liturgy that invokes the notion, show us believers that civil religion has a hold on us, and that we need a place where we can sit down together and think things out.2 6 This argument of mine needs to get beneath simple contrasts between biblical faith and civil religion. We believers need to reason together, plopped down as we are in the middle of the present. We believers include naval officers and lawyers …

The Basic Law: A Fifty Year Assessment, Donald P. Kommers

Journal Articles

In 1949 the new German Basic Law raised many questions. Could a newly minted constitution-mere words on paper-breathe new life into a people devastated by war? Would it serve as a stable framework of government? Would it promote respect for human rights and popular government? Would it foster internal political unity? Half a century later all these questions can be answered in the affirmative. The Basic Law is one of the world’s most respected and imitated constitutions and it has emerged as the vital center of Germany's constitutional culture. It is invoked repeatedly in parliamentary debates and resorted to in …

A Comparative Constitutional Law Canon, Donald P. Kommers, John E. Finn

Journal Articles

The article discusses what types of legal cases constitute a “canon” on American constitutional theory and comparative constitutional law, examples of case law that illustrate important developments in the two subjects. It describes the process taken by the article's authors to select a small sampling of 90 “canon” cases for their course book on American constitutional law, which is designed for the academic community and for undergraduate students enrolled in a traditional liberal arts curriculum.

More's Skill, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 2000

More's Skill, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

Robert Bolt chose a phrase from a sixteenth century poet named Robert Whittinton for the title of his modem play about Thomas More: "[A] man of an angel's wit and singular learning; I know not his fellow. For where is the man of that gentleness, lowliness, and affability? And as time requireth a man of marvellous mirth and pastimes; and sometimes of as sad gravity: a man for all seasons."

Bolt's title suggests that he took a gamble on the possibility that More would have modern, universal appeal. I have been interested in how that gamble worked out. If you …

Civil Rights And Human Rights: A Call For Closer Collaboration, Douglass Cassel

Journal Articles

Those of you who may be familiar with my commentaries know that my usual topics are mass murderers overseas or U.S. foreign policy toward them. Today, however, I would like to focus on something closer to home-the history of and prospects for fruitful collaboration between the civil rights movement and the international human rights movement. My purpose is to encourage dialogue between civil rights and human rights lawyers. As a sometime civil rights lawyer myself, I am convinced that such a dialogue could be productive.

We might start by distinguishing human rights from civil rights. In customary American usage, the …

The Recusal Alternative To Campaign Finance Legislation, John Copeland Nagle Jan 2000

The Recusal Alternative To Campaign Finance Legislation, John Copeland Nagle

Journal Articles

Typical campaign finance proposals focus on limiting the amount of money that can be contributed to candidates and the amount of money that candidates can spend. This article suggests an alternative proposal that places no restrictions on contributions or spending, but rather targets the corrupting influence of contributions. Under the proposals, legislators would be required to recuse themselves from voting on issues directly affecting contributors. I contend that this proposal would prevent corruption and the appearance of corruption while remedying the first amendment objections to the regulation of money in campaigns.
