Membrane-Based Sorbent For Heavy Metal Sequestration, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Leonidas G. Bachas, Lawrence Cullen, Jamie A. Hestekin, Subhas K. Sikdar

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Patents

A process is provided for making membrane-based sorbents with enhanced binding activity that are particularly useful for heavy metal sequestration. The process includes the step of selectively hydrolyzing a polyacetylated membrane in order to deacetylated a surface layer of said membrane including the pore surfaces and expose free hydroxyl groups. This is followed by the oxidizing of the hydroxyl groups to aldehyde groups. This is then followed by the attaching of a polycarboxylic acid such as a polyamino acid, polyalkenoic acid or polypeptide to the membrane through the aldehyde groups. Preferably, the hydrolyzing step is completed under alkaline conditions and …

The Effects Of Merger And Acquisition Announcements On The Security Prices Of Bidding Firms And Target Firms In Asia, Lai Kuen Wong Oct 2000

The Effects Of Merger And Acquisition Announcements On The Security Prices Of Bidding Firms And Target Firms In Asia, Lai Kuen Wong

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

In Asia, the studies on mergers and takeovers are still very scarce. With the rise of financial crisis in 1997, there has been an increase of corporate takeovers and mergers. In the light of other relevant empirical literature on the subject from different established equity markets, the study is made to determine the effects of acquisition announcements on the price behavior of the Asian bidding and target firms. The objective of the study is to provide a reference for investors about whether the firms concerned experienced abnormal return around M&A announcements in Asia (no matter whether M&A activities were completed …

Algae Of Devils Hole, Nevada, Death Valley National Park, William D. Shepard, Dean W. Blinn, Ray J. Hoffman, Paul T. Kantz Oct 2000

Algae Of Devils Hole, Nevada, Death Valley National Park, William D. Shepard, Dean W. Blinn, Ray J. Hoffman, Paul T. Kantz

Western North American Naturalist

We examined algal flora in the aquatic system of Devils Hole, Nevada. The water is seasonally warm, near neutral in pH, and rich in dissolved carbonate, indicative of deeply circulating groundwater flowing through carbonate rock. Most algae were benthic, with only a few planktonic representatives. Eighty-four terminal identifications in 44 genera were recorded, with diatoms and blue-green algae the most speciose groups. Diatoms were major contributors to the grazing food web. Large, mat-forming filamentous algae have an important influence on the physicochemical and general structure of the benthic substrates in Devils Hole.

Ecological Impacts Of Seed Harvester Ants On Soil Attributes In A Larrea-Dominated Shrubland, Simon A. Lei Oct 2000

Ecological Impacts Of Seed Harvester Ants On Soil Attributes In A Larrea-Dominated Shrubland, Simon A. Lei

Western North American Naturalist

The influence of seed harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex rugosus) colonies on soil properties and soil surface and moisture characteristics was investigated through comparison of adjacent, nonnest (reference, 4 m beyond ant colony) areas in Las Vegas, Nevada. Effects of ant colonies on both terrace and slope sites were investigated. Soil moisture content and soil bulk density in a creosote bush (Larrea tridentata)–dominated shrubland were significantly lower, while soil temperature, soil organic matter, and percent pore space were significantly higher in soils with ant nests relative to adjacent reference soils. Soil pH and texture did not differ significantly …
