Proceedings Of The Arkansas Water Resources Center Annual Conference: Environmental Hydrology, Kenneth F. Steele Nov 2000

Proceedings Of The Arkansas Water Resources Center Annual Conference: Environmental Hydrology, Kenneth F. Steele

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The papers and abstracts in these proceedings are the result of a joint conference of the Arkansas Water Resources Center (A WRC) with the SouthCentral Section of the Geological Society of America. The joint conference was a success with about 250 participants. A WRC sponsored two sessions on Environmental Hydrology and a short course titled "Hydrogeology and Geochemistry of Salt Water Contamination." The Environmental Hydrology presentations covered wide-ranging topics that reflect the diversity of the environmental settings across Arkansas. Topics ranged from salt water and critical ground water issues in the Delta to endangered species and interbasin ground-water recharge in …

My Life In The Headlines, William Young Nov 2000

My Life In The Headlines, William Young

Word Ways

I frequently talk to reporters when i am at work. My name has appeared in my publications, including the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, and even People Magazine. I used to enjoy being quoted, but now I would prefer that "William Young" never be used as a source for information. The possibilities of misquotations and lots of follow-up calls far outweigh any pleasure I feel upon seeing my name. I now do not even bother to save most of the newsclips that quote me.

Textual Logology, A. Ross Eckler Nov 2000

Textual Logology, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

The most important purpose of Word Ways is to present new logological ideas, showing how far one can move beyond the well-trodden paths of palindromes, anagrams, word squares, lipograms and the like. However, it is also important to step back now and then to observe how disparate parts of logology relate to each other, as can be seen in Making the Alphabet Dance. This article shows how various logological concepts appearing in Word Ways during the past thirty years can be grouped in a new logological field, that of textual logology.

Codebook: The Lsay 1999 School Survey For The Y98 Cohort Technical Report No. 23, Sue Fullarton

LSAY Technical Reports

Students participating in this LSAY cohort were originally sampled in 1998 from 296 schools nationally. In 1999, the schools from which the original sample of students was drawn took part in a survey to collect information about the features and programs of schools, as well as features of teachers and teaching, which might influence the progress of students in their school and in their later work careers. The survey involved two questionnaires: (1) a school questionnaire to be completed by the principal (or other school representative) and (2) a questionnaire to a sample of ten Year 10 teachers. The assistance …

A Technique For Analyzing Radiation From Conformal Antennas Mounted On Arbitrarily-Shaped Conducting Bodies, Dean Arakaki, Douglas H. Werner, Raj Mittra Nov 2000

A Technique For Analyzing Radiation From Conformal Antennas Mounted On Arbitrarily-Shaped Conducting Bodies, Dean Arakaki, Douglas H. Werner, Raj Mittra

Electrical Engineering

This paper presents an efficient method to solve the problem of radiation from conformal aperture and microstrip antennas mounted on arbitrarily-shaped conducting bodies. The method, based on the surface equivalence and reciprocity principles, uses a combination of the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) and Method of Moments (MoM) techniques to substantially improve the computational efficiency of the radiation pattern calculation. When the geometry and location of the radiating element are modified, only a small portion of the overall analysis requires re-simulation. This leads to a significant improvement in computational efficiency over presently used techniques, and can substantially improve design efficiency …

Another Look At The L'Ambiance Plaza Collapse, Rachel Martin, Norbert J. Delatte Nov 2000

Another Look At The L'Ambiance Plaza Collapse, Rachel Martin, Norbert J. Delatte

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The collapse of the L'Ambiance Plaza building, under construction in Bridgeport, Conn., in 1987, killed 28 construction workers. A number of concurrent investigations were undertaken to attempt to determine the cause. At least six separate theories were developed. However, a prompt legal settlement kept these investigations from being completed. This paper reviews the collapse and discusses the competing theories. The failure focused controversy on the safety of the lift-slab construction method. Because there is a need in civil engineering education for case studies to illustrate ethical and professional issues as well as technical principles, this paper also addresses these aspects. …
